Summary: Challenging, hilly course with a mix of trails and fire roads. There are several challenging, leg-burning, steep ascents, slow, technical, rolling ridges, and a limited supply of fast “free speed” on the descents. The course is point to point and shares the second half of the 50k course, which finishes at Larrabee State Park.
Race Details
Detailed course description:
- The 25k race starts at the Pine and Cedar Aid Station of the 50k course (mile 16.6 for them) and then shares the rest of the 50k course until the finish.
- The course starts out with a 1,400 foot gain over the first 2 miles
- Then it takes a dip of 100 feet, along with another ascent of 100 feet, before dropping 500 feet over the next 1.5 miles
- Next the course gains 100 feet over the next mile, so very gradual, and then gains 500 feet over the next .5 miles, which is about 5.5 miles into the race
- Runners then lose 1,400 feet over the next 4 miles, steeper in some places more than others, until about 9.5 miles into the race. In the middle of this descent, runners hit the first aid station (Fragrance Lake) at mile 6.9, then start a loop of 5.8 miles until hitting the same aid station again.
- The course is fairly flat for the next 1.5 miles, until around mile 11 (the Interurban Trail, which is gravel)
- The last big ascent is next, gaining 750 feet over the next 1.2 miles, until mile 12.2, then starts a descent (hitting the second aid station, Fragrance Lake, at 12.7)
- Finally runners lose 900 feet all the way until the finish, from about 12.2 to 14.9 miles

Lessons Learned from Race Reports
Not much space in the trailhead parking lot at the start for a warmup before the race
Course is well shaded with a fair amount of rocks and roots, and nettles alongside the course
Work at running hills on tired legs, given the race starts out with a 1400 foot climb and then has two more big climbs after that, in addition to small rollers. There’s very little trail to recover on, such as flat, easier sections.
There is a chance for being warm since the race starts later at 10am
Race is pretty spread out of 50k runners by the time the 25k starts and since there aren’t many entrants (haven’t been in the past), both races get spread out
Elevation
Total gain/loss: ~3400/~3500
