SPECIALTIES

I work with runners that are new to sport, runners that may be coming back after some time off, or those just looking for something new! I can offer help with training for a race, building base mileage, helping train for a new distance, and more. I’m here to help you stay accountable when training for anything from a 5K to a marathon or if you’re looking to stay in shape. Whatever your goals are I can help you work towards them!

PHILOSOPHY

I strongly believe in enjoying the process. If you’re struggling with running right now, trying something new is always a good place to start. Setting a goal is a necessary starting point. Life changes, so it is important for your relationship with running to adapt with it! With a busy schedule, we can adapt your training program to best fit you and your goals.

Over time I’ve come to know that there is always more to learn in terms of running. When it comes to recovery, injury prevention, strength training, and training methods everyone is different. What works for some will not work for everyone. With a science-based approach we can learn what works best for you!

At the end of the day, I’m here to help you! Ask as many questions as you want and I’ll be there to answer them. If there is something I’m not able to help with I will point you in the right direction. I believe communication is an important factor in a successful coach-athlete relationship. To work best together I’ll be open with you about the ideas behind your plan and I’ll need feedback from you on how you’re feeling about it, physically and mentally! Based on how you’re feeling during training we can adjust the plan!

COACHING EXPERIENCE

For the last few years, I have helped family and friends to get into running, create running plans, and train for races. During the summer of 2023 I decided to make it official by completing the UESCA running coach certification.

ABOUT ME

I’ve been running for as long as I can remember and it has been much more than just a physical activity in my life and even more, I love to help others enjoy it. I started out in the sport as kid, and since then I’ve gone through phases of jumping, sprinting, and long distance through high school, college, and beyond. I had competed in long jump in college for two years, when I decided to shift my focus back to long distance running.

Outside of running I try to travel and read as much as I can! I love to be outdoors hiking, biking, skiing or just relaxing.

BIG INFLUENCES

I come from a family of runners who have always been there to motivate me and support my running. As a coach, I strive to be like them to help motivate and cheer for my athletes.

I have been lucky over the years to have some really great coaches who have taught me the most important thing is to listen to your body. You know it best. From my previous coaches I’ve also learned how to let myself take a break and how important it is to work your running schedule around your life and not the other way around.

While creating marathon training plans for myself I’ve learned a lot about Hal Higdon’s and Jack Daniels’s training methods. Most recently, I’ve learned through my UESCA certification many details relating to the mental game, injury prevention, and more that I’m excited to bring into my coaching practice.

RACING HISTORY

After watching the Chicago Marathon one year I knew that was going to be my next step. I signed up to run the next year’s race for a charity and have not looked back. It was painful and I knew I had a lot to learn, but I was hooked. Since then, I have completed four marathons, four half marathons, many 10Ks, and other races in between. I have run races in snowstorms, rain, the summer heat and have worked through different kinds of injury and illness. Whatever it is you want to work through, I’m here to help! I’m coming back from an injury myself and am looking to train for a half marathon!

Arla helped coach me through my second half-marathon and the first one I ran with a time goal in mind. I have a track/xc background but had taken some time off and wanted help structuring workouts for a longer race. I definitely didn’t run everything exactly as written but Arla did a great job adjusting the schedule if I ran a workout too hard or went further than planned because I was feeling good, the same was true for when I took things easier than planned because I didn’t feel good. Arla was always happy to explain why a workout was on the day it was or structured the way it was. Overall I thought she did great and was very responsive to the amount of feedback I wanted/needed.

Arla is a great coach! Not only is she extremely affordable, she has coached me through my first half-marathon in just a couple of months as a brand new runner, and now coaching me through a full marathon. She is on top of the training program and on top communication. Easy to communicate with, and is filled with a lot of great knowledge and experience for everything running related. I always feel like she’s just one text or phone call away, and always addresses any questions that come up.
