SPECIALTIES
Any running events from sprints to the marathon. I have coached athletes in all events from the 100m to the marathon. Because I have been a MS and HS coach, I have coached runners with no experience at all up to all-state runners.
PHILOSOPHY
My core belief is that the key to improvement is consistent training over time. There are no quick fixes. Training decisions are targeted first and foremost to keeping the athlete healthy so they can be consistent in training. I also believe that basic speed is important at all levels of running, and that we should touch on speed in some form nearly every day.
COACHING EXPERIENCE
I have coached middle and high school cross country and track athletes since 1991. Along the way, I have also coached some alumni and adult runners that have continued to have running goals as adults.
ABOUT ME
In addition to coaching, I was a software developer for 17 years before a second career as a high school math and computer science teacher for the past 16 years. I also love to SCUBA dive with my family, mainly in the Caribbean area, but we’re hoping to hit the Great Barrier Reef soon! I’m a dog person and love to read.
BIG INFLUENCES
Over such a long period of coaching, I have read and studied many different coaches. As with most coaches, I am heavily influenced by my own coaches in high school and college, but other influences include Arthur Lydiard, Jack Daniels, Jay Johnson, and many others. I am a believer in forming a program that works for the runner and not shoe-horning into one specific system.
RACING HISTORY
I ran competitively in high school and college. In high school, I finished 4th at the 1986 Indiana state cross country meet and 6th in the 1600m at the track state meet. In college at Georgia Tech, I won the 1988 Georgia Intercollegiate Cross Country Championship and was an All-ACC selection in the 10,000m on the track. As an adult, I have continued to compete. I qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon in 2017.
