PHILOSOPHY
I do not believe in a strict coaching philosophy as I think that can limit how well a good coach can properly help each athlete. But I do follow some overarching principles listed below, knowing they can change as more research and ideas are presented in the running/science world.
- The old adage, “you can’t out work a poor diet” is something I follow strictly. The best way to improve is to get your body the nutrients it needs to adapt, on a consistent basis.
- Sleep is just as important as nutrition. Getting the right amount of sleep for your body will be a great way to improve your recovery times.
- Consistency in training (running at the same time every day, running the same # of times every week, etc.), sleeping, and nutrition will lead to consistency in racing.
- Creating a reactive running pattern will lead to less injuries and a more efficient way for you to express speed and strength. It doesn’t matter if you have a V8 aerobic engine if you have the car body of a honda civic
- Constant Communication between the Athlete and Coach to get the most out of the training program
COACHING EXPERIENCE
While I’m still gaining coaching experience and growing my list of athletes, I’ve been working with athletes across different levels for several years. My focus has been on continually learning about coaching techniques to best support my athletes in achieving their goals and enhancing their enjoyment of running. In just a short span, all my athletes have shown improvement, with some remarkable successes: from a 22-minute 5k time to becoming a 2x NAIA All-American Athlete, and another athlete cutting 75 seconds off her 5k PR after just 2 months of training.
ABOUT ME
Working with runners of all skill levels and backgrounds is something I really enjoy. I’m eager to challenge and inspire every athlete to achieve their goals just as much as I am my own goals. Outside of running I spend my time exploring new places with friends and family. Hiking is something I’ve taken an interest in and so has travel, especially within the last year. I know how important balance is in life, so though I take my training and coaching very seriously, I know that it’s good to take some time to fit some fun in and give myself some grace.
A few fun snippets about me: I have a dog whose name is Steve who loves any activity with a ball or frisbee. I am a pretty competitive individual and find that I will happily participate in just about any sport with a special interest in soccer and football. And finally, I’m a coffee and dessert enthusiast. I love to try new coffee places anytime I travel and the same goes for ice cream.
BIG INFLUENCES
- Mihály Iglói- His approach to specialized training for teach individual and aerobic intervals for flux training were leaps and bounds ahead of his time
- Renato Canova- How to properly progress an athlete in training from “General exercises” to “Specific” so an athlete can perform their best at during a training block
- Jonathan Marcus- How to teach proper Steady State running form mechanics to an athlete with a Constraints Led Approach/ How an athlete can enjoy training more than just focusing on the times/ How to increase the amount of tools a coach has to help solve an athletes “kink in the pipe”
- Steve Magnus- How important the mental aspect of running is/How nutrition and sleep are the biggest determinants of an athlete’s success
RACING HISTORY
Placing 3rd place in my conference in college to qualify for NAIA Nationals in Oregon will always be a top running moment for me. I had missed the Nationals twice the years prior by 1 or 2 spots respectively. We had a hilly home course that I had trained 100 mile weeks for and I was ecstatic that I was able to pull it off and see what hard and consistent work can do for an athlete.

SOCIAL
Caleb –
Coach Chris is a great guy, always answering my questions within a reasonable time, willing to make a connection and conversation with you! I’m glad I found Chris
Kelly Bird –
Chris is coaching my teenage son. He has developed a great rapport and more importantly established trust. My son is very science- and data-based in his training and Chris gets that and helps interpret and analyze. Chris responds quickly, sends schedules, gives feedback, and affords my son attention and concern. He is a terrific coach!
Timothy Cayford –
Chris has been a great coach with insights that totally transformed my approach to training. The results show it; I accomplished and surpassed all of my goals more quickly than I could have expected – please note though, one thing that is great about Chris’ approach is that he is firmly rooted in a long-term and holistic approach (I can easily tend toward exactly the opposite: short-term and narrow). Chris helped me re-define ‘success’ in running.
