If you are passionate about running, eager to test yourself over a new distance, or hope to break your PR, I’d love to work with you. I have experience coaching athletes who are entering their first 5K ever, to the best-of-the-best collegiate student-athletes and post-collegiate road runners, to ultramarathon runners. My running, racing, and injury history have shaped me into a coach who is patient, understanding, and encouraging. I can’t wait to work with you as you embark on your next training journey in this sport!

PHILOSOPHY

Getting to know you as a person, your training history, your running goals, and other aspects that impact you outside of training is one of the most important things I can do for you as a coach. Every athlete is unique and your training plan should reflect that to keep you happy, healthy, and training consistently. With my background in kinesiology and experience in coaching thus far, I bring a science-based approach to my training to help you achieve your goals.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

As a college student, I was a camp counselor for the University of Wisconsin’s Cross Country Camp of Champions for four years straight. This yearly summer session for high school boys and girls serves as a training camp ahead of their cross country seasons. I worked with a group of 10-14 girls every session, guiding them on runs around Madison, educating them on proper nutrition, strength training, racing tactics, and answering any questions they had about managing high school or college classes, being recruited to run in college, etc.

Following my collegiate career with the Badgers, I’ve gained valuable experiences as a group-run leader at multiple running shoe stores I’ve worked at including Movin’ Shoes in Madison and Heartbreak Hill Running Company in Chicago. In addition, I served as the volunteer assistant coach of the highly competitive club team, Second City Track Club (SCTC), from 2020 to 2021. SCTC has seen three male marathon runners run sub-2:14 in the marathon and eight athletes qualify for the 2020 US Olympic Marathon Trials. Recently, runner Colin Mickow placed 6th place overall (2nd American) at the 2021 Chicago Marathon in 2:16 and qualified to run at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in the marathon.

Currently, my coaching experience includes serving as the volunteer assistant coach of the highly successful University of New Mexico men’s and women’s cross country programs. The women’s team recently finished 3rd at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships in 2021 and won their 14th-straight Mountain West Conference title. I also coach nine individuals, whose talents range from beginner to elite post-collegians.

ABOUT ME

I moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2021 and have enjoyed meeting a new community, exploring the local mountains, and training at altitude. I work full time at a running shoe store in town, so if you ever have questions on shoes I’m always available to chat. I’ve spent time in Madison, Wisconsin, and Seattle, Washington for school, but I originally hail from the Chicago suburbs. I’m a huge Chicago sports fan (with exception to the White Sox) and Wisconsin Badger fan. Outside of running, I’m a cyclist, snowboarder, and hiker. I’m an avid reader, coffee lover, and cider fan.

RACING HISTORY

I’ve always considered myself to be a bit unconventional when it comes to the races I sign up for. In my high school and collegiate racing days, I was always the person to do the distance races that no one wanted to do, whether it was the 3200 meter run in high school or the 3K steeplechase in college. I’m drawn to races that allow me to fill a role on my team or that push my limits physically and mentally. That mindset has trickled over into my road racing and trail racing, now. I’m not afraid to sign up for a new and unique race distance so I can see what I’m made of. Signing up for races like the Syttende Mai 20-Mile Run and the Mid-South 50K was a daunting challenge to me at first, but it’s through these experiences that I’ve learned so much about my ability to segment longer distances in my mind or problem-solve mid-race. I’ve become a stronger runner mentally as I’ve aged and I’m really excited for my next build-up!

    For context – I am a fairly experienced male runner that typically runs 5k-10k races (5k PR ~14:30, run in 2020). In short, I have been very happy with Erin’s coaching so far. She has been my de facto coach since August of 2021, and officially in November of 2021. Since then, I have PR’ed in events as diverse as the 3k, mile, and half marathon (some altitude adjusted).
    My training has made sense with respect to the events I am running; for example, when training for cross country in the fall, we did long hill repeats, tempos, and 1k/mile repeats on the track. When pivoting to the mile/3k, we were doing less volume but faster reps to focus on speed. I would say these prepared me fairly well for the races I was targeting in the past few months.
    She is willing to adjust workouts based on how the athlete is feeling or other external factors, such as sleep deprivation or weather. For example, my running schedule has been consistently one Wednesday workout, one Saturday workout, a Sunday long run, and easy runs in between (totaling 70-80 miles/week). My work schedule is fairly demanding during the week, so she made my Wednesday workout fairly relaxed – typically a tempo/fartlek. Saturdays then are the track sessions, and tend to be more difficult. Long runs are between 15 – 18 miles depending on the upcoming event.
    If I could give one critique (and hardly one at that), it’s that sometimes there needs to be firm direction towards targeting certain races. However, she has always been open to comments and concerns, and has helped easing my pre-race anxiety on more than a few occasions. For a relatively young coach, her training knowledge is quite deep, with workouts tending to skew towards reps at or around VO2-max. Given the previous results, I would say her program has been pretty effective.
