SPECIALTIES
My hope is to come alongside you in your fitness goals, whether it is training for your first 5K, setting a new PR in the marathon, or a general desire to improve your overall fitness by providing quality coaching and encouragement. I have worked with middle school and high school athletes training for distances from the mile to 5K, as well as adults hoping to qualify for the Boston Marathon. I enjoy working with all levels and take a long-term approach to coaching – I hope running is something to be enjoyed for many years!
PHILOSOPHY
I believe as a coach it is my job to help you see and grow into your potential as a runner. Each athlete has their own unique makeup and there is no “one size fits all” approach to training. Along with running, there are several other elements that I consider a necessity to help aid performance and fitness. Along with a quality running plan, coaching will also include:
- Support and focus on the mental elements of training – “Running is 90 percent mental and the rest is physical.” Our mind is a powerful tool and running can help teach us that we are capable of more than we ever thought.
- Information on nutrition – fueling our bodies is an incredibly important element of training and we will go over general guidelines together. As your coach, I can also help connect you with a qualified sports dietitian to help further your journey.
- Strength training guide – strength training is a key in helping us not only avoid injury, but in running faster and chasing new PRs. As an ACE certified personal trainer I will also help you put together a strength training plan to help you become a stronger, faster runner.
With that being said, I know that there is much going on in each of our lives that demands our time and attention. As a mom of three, I understand the importance to recognize where our heath and fitness goals fit in to the overall picture of our life. I believe that our bodies and health are a gift, and that taking care of our bodies creates more capacity to engage in the things that are important to us. I believe that setting and achieving big goals helps illuminate the greatness that lies within us. As your coach, I believe it is my job to help show you that you are stronger and more capable than you can imagine.
COACHING EXPERIENCE
I began as a volunteer middle school track coach in 2005 and have been coaching in some capacity ever since. I coached middle school and high school athletes as a cross country and track coach from 2005-2017. In 2018 I became a licensed Run Coach and Personal trainer through RRCA and ACE. Since receiving my certifications, I have coached over 80 adult athletes with goals ranging from getting started as a new runner to qualifying for the Boston Marathon.
ABOUT ME
I live in Columbus, OH with my husband and 3 kids. I have been a Buckeye since birth and Saturdays in the fall are spent on long runs and watching college football.
My running career began on my high school cross country and track teams. I first fell in love with the social element of the sport, and appreciation for the other benefits developed later. After high school I coached cross country and track at the middle school and high school levels for the next 8 years. In my mid-twenties I had the desire to race again and ran my first half-marathon. I was hooked from there. I ran my first marathon after having my daughter at age 30, and through quality coaching from my mom was able to qualify for Boston. I will never forget the feeling of crossing that finish line.
Over the last 10 years, we have added to our family and I am now a mom to an 10, 8 and 5 year-old. I have run 8 total marathons and countless other races, and I am convinced that the best is yet to come – I am looking forward to continuing to race as a masters runner.
BIG INFLUENCES
My biggest influence in running and life is my mom. I grew up going to her races and watching her blow away people’s expectations. She never let anyone tell her “you can’t” and ran the Boston Marathon 40 years ago with only 500 other women. She taught me that running is about so much more than running – it helps us eliminate any self-imposed limits we place on ourselves and show us that we are capable of more than we could have ever thought.
My high school cross country and track coach was also a big influence. He taught us that mental training was just as important as physical training, and taught us to take the long-term approach to training. He instilled in us that our best years were ahead of us and to keep chasing PRs into our later years.
RACING HISTORY
I started as a middle-distance runner in high school and have now raced everything from the 800 to the marathon. For the last 8 years I have focused on the marathon and have completed the Columbus Marathon, Marine Corps Marathon, Last Chance BQ in Grand Rapids, Chicago Marathon, NYC Marathon and the Boston Marathon (2016, 2021, 2023). Through marathon training I have also been able to set new PR’s in shorter distances like the half marathon, 10k and 5k. As a 36 year old I broke my 15 year-old PR in the 5K. I am looking forward to much more racing to come!

Lynne Froling –
Julia is one of the best coaches! I’ve only been working with her for a short time and unfortunately, I’ve had a mild injury so real training has been delayed on my part. But she is very knowledgeable and easy to work with! We connected immediately! I also love how she feels strongly about incorporating strength training, which I need to do more consistently. I’m looking forward to working with Julie more!
Diamond Moore –
Julia has been the best! She has helped so much in building confidence when coming back from a large injury. I am truly grateful for how detailed she is in every aspect of day to day life and race prep. I would recommend her 110%!!
Natalie Morley –
Where to begin! Julia is an amazing coach, beyond knowledgeable about all things running, but also very well equipped to discuss the nutrition aspects of training. As a first-time marathoner/new to running, Julia made me feel so comfortable with reaching my goals. Whether it was sending me YouTube videos on proper form, or stretches when I complained about leg pain, or even a very digestible document so I could meal plan accordingly, the entire time working with her made everything so seamless and pleasant. She was able to take her wealth of knowledge and meet me where I was at in the process. I was able to focus on getting the training done, as she handled all the planning so all I had to do was show up and do the work and achieve my goals. I look forward to working with her again as we tackle the next goal. A great coach and person!
Melissa Wilhelm –
Julia is amazing!! She has been coaching me for almost 3months now and I feel better than ever. Usually after a few months of running I develop injuries. She has taken me on a gradual path that includes running, strength training, and cross training that has helped prevent that. I have an unusual work schedule and she has been able to fit all my training into. I highly recommend Julia!! She is also always super encouraging and realistic when we have our phone conversations
Mackenzie R –
Julia is fantastic at what she does! I have loved getting to work with her over the last two months and look forward to what lies ahead. She has done a great job of planning and building a training plan for me, she has been incredibly encouraging and kind, asks good questions to be attentive to needs, is attentive holistically to the training cycle, and just an overall amazing coach.
LeJeune Johnson –
***Julia’s bio resognated with me because of her amazing race accomplishments AND she is a mom. Having a coach that can identify with the demands of training and being a mom is important to me because it requires finding balance.
LeJeune Johnson –
I have been running since 2018 for fun, but this year (2023) I started running in organized races (5Ks and 10Ks). I have goals next year to run my 1st 1/2 Marathon at Rock and Roll Las Vegas and plans to run my 1st full at the Chicago Marathon in Ocrober (2024). I knew that running in thoes races I wouldneed additional guidance if I wanted to perfom my best. After reading several bios on coaches on this platform, Julia’s bio resognated with me because she is a mom. I have been training with Julia for the past 3 months. She is very organized. We use an appl to upload and track runs. You can also communicate with her via the app with notes or comments. So far I really like where things are going. I am excited about 2024.
Meredith Mackner –
I have been training with Julia for 2 months now and so far I’ve had an excellent experience. From working through an injury, rebuilding my strength and rediscovering my love of running, Julia has been a positive motivational force, a wealth of knowledge and a reassuring voice through setbacks. She has also been extremely flexible helping me tailor my training schedule around a busy schedule and regular travel. I’m excited to continue training for my first marathon with her as my coach. I highly recommend working with her!
Erika Klear –
If there were more than 5 stars, Julia gets them all!! She just coach me through my first marathon!! She was amazing at meeting me where I was in my running journey and taught me so much throughout this process. Julia is always real and encouraging through her coaching from the runs, to nutrition, and what I needed most of all the mental strength. She know when to push you for more and when to pull back. It’s also amazing to know her journey as she works with her coach to accomplish her races she’s working towards as well! I am so excited to set my next goal and work more with Julia!!
Emma Lengerich –
Julia is a supportive, intuitive, knowledgable and incredible coach. I am getting back into running and am enjoying the process of finding confidence in my mind and body again.. She is making sure I am fueling properly and making sure my workouts fit my schedule. Cannot recommend her enough!
Rose Smith –
I love Julia’s coaching style! She is so positive and encouraging while also being there for the real talk when tough stuff like injuries comes up. I have only been working with her for a couple months and already feel speedier and stronger from the workouts and strength training she puts together. I can’t wait to see where more time working with her will take me. Thank you for showing me how amazing it is to have a coach as an adult — what a joy!
Emily Sommer –
Julia is a fantastic coach. She is a great cheerleader, full of knowledge, and very personable. I love the consistent phone call check-ins, continual updates on the coaching calendar, the encouragement, advice and the tailor-made coaching for my personal goals. If I have any inkling of a doubt in my own mind, she is there to remind me of the hard work I’ve put in and that I have what it takes to reach my goals. She believes in my when I don’t have the courage to believe in myself. Her belief in me isn’t based on random hopes and dreams but is based on data from intentional workouts designed to help me reach my goals. She is amazing!
Sarah Bonser –
I’ve been training with Julia for almost three months and have been really happy with her attentiveness and ability to focus with me on my goals.
Matthew Shortt –
I have loved working with Julia! She is quick to update my training plan and has steered me through several challenging schedule conflicts and injuries. Julia has helped me understand the benefits of balancing my weekly mileage, strength training, and long-term goals; already setting PRs two months in. Don’t hesitate to sign up!
Sara –
Julia really listens to what I need and part of that is to make sure that my training schedule jives with my work schedule and other things in my life. We have only worked together a few months but she has already helped me through an injury from a fall and we are working on training for my first half marathon. I have been running less than a year and I am learning a lot from Julia. So far I am very pleased with Julia as a coach and I look forward to working with her more!
Hayley Maynard –
Julia is extremely attentive and focused. Her feedback on each run is helpful as I progress through my plan and her bi-weekly phone calls allow me to share updates, ask questions and modify my plan as needed. I enjoy working with Julia as she coaches me for my half marathon postpartum.
Kalina Hatzell –
Julia is a fantastic coach, I’ve really appreciated getting to know her and working with her. Although it’s impossible to list all the reasons she’s fantastic, here are the main ones:
1. She’s knowledgeable about running and what it takes to meet your goals. I’ve learned so much from her and she’s really pushed me to the next level without breaking my confidence.
2. She’s personable and consistent. She truly cares about your goals. I’m big on consistency and timeliness, and she always is. She makes me feel like I’m her only runner.
With her expertise I’ve gone from running 1:30/1 to 12/1 in six months while training for a marathon. That’s crazy! Looking forward to working with her in helping me get faster.
Thanks Julia!

Carly Sinclair –
Julia is an amazing coach! She is always so supportive and kind. And she has helped me improve my speed a lot. She does a great job of taking your thoughts and concerns into account and then giving you a plan that will work for your needs. I never used a running coach before her, but I am so happy that I took the plunge and signed up. You will be too!
Nathan Berry –
Julia was awesome!! Her program was phenomenal and she was willing to develop it around my availability and needs. I had 3 months to train for a mile and a half run. At the beginning I was running a mile and a half in 15:30. My final run was 12:12! 13 seconds under what I needed. Julia was super supportive and kept positive even when I wasn’t. Highly recommend.
Kendra Desler –
Julia is coaching me through my first marathon. Throughout the process, she has been so encouraging, motivating, communicative and flexible. I have had to train in different countries and time zones, and Julia ensured she knew all of my travel dates and plans ahead of time to make my training plan work with my schedule. She is extremely knowledgeable and made sure to focus on my priorities of nutrition and cross/strength training. She has made the training process fun and exciting. I would recommend Julia 100%!
Nir Kadosh –
Julia has been incredibly helpful! I had very little running knowledge prior to starting to work with her and program my path forward. She is easily accessible and understands the struggle of human life-running conflict. She cares about your hydration, nutrition, mental health when it comes to running, and physical well being. I really appreciate that aspect. I feel like I have made solid improvements in my capabilities since starting with her and am currently on track to run a half marathon, which a year ago I didn’t think was at all possible for me!
Chelsea Sefton –
I have loved working with Julia! Her meal plans have been SO helpful in taking the guesswork out of meal planning too- such a timesaver! She is knowledgeable, friendly, and encouraging. Thankful to have her as a coach!
Sandy Hernandez –
Julia is highly skilled. No matter what phase you are in, she can help get you to where you want to be. She is the complete package. With Julia, I am learning to find a healthy balance with my runs, nutrition, hydration, and mindset. I’ve made tremendous progress in such a short amount of time. I am super excited to continue crushing my future goals with her support!
Andrew Swartzel –
Julia helped me get from a 2:13 half marathon to a 1:57 finish in 6 months! She has a lot of knowledge and can apply it to my personal situation effectively. I love working with her!
