SPECIALTIES
I specialize in coaching youth athletes (12-18 years old) with a focus on development and enjoyment of running with the intent it will lead to college scholarships someday. If you need a coach for the summer or winter months, I’d be glad to help you not only maintain fitness, but greatly enhance it so you can catch everyone off guard by how fast you’re running when the next season arrives.
I also coach athletes ranging in ages 18-40 who are working to improve their time in any event from the 800-marathon. If you want to be a competitive athlete and reach new heights I can help you get there. If your goal is to get faster and work on speed as an athlete, together we can get you to accomplish whatever your specific goals are and more!
PHILOSOPHY
I coach endurance athletes. Depending on the study, anywhere from 30%-75% of distance runners get hurt every year. Running by itself often isn’t the best way to get faster. I focus on developing everyone I coach not just as a runner, but as an athlete. This allows them to adapt and improve faster, handle harder workloads, and reach their goals.
My philosophy is built on long term development. As a middle and high school coach, I might coach a kid for 7 years and in order for them to reach their potential I need to develop and take care of them over the long haul. Anybody can make someone fast for a year or two, but it takes patience and knowledge to develop someone over the course of several years to help them keep getting faster.
I want to work with athletes who want to become the best version of themselves in sports and in life. If that’s you then let’s get to work!
COACHING EXPERIENCE
I have coached at the middle/high school and college ranks. I currently serve as the head cross country and track and field coach at a private school and helped the cross country team to a 7th place finish in the state in my first season. As an athlete I always loved to dive into the science of training and running which allowed me to have a “coaches” mind since I was in high school.
ABOUT ME
I live in Mitchell, South Dakota and was born and raised on a South Dakota farm. I am a middle and high school coach for track and field and cross country. I also teach Bible and have been a runner for almost my entire life. I enjoy running, hiking, reading, and playing, watching and talking sports.
BIG INFLUENCES
A major influence of my coaching is Mike Smith of Northern Arizona University. From him I learned that the priority needs to be the human not the athlete. No training plan is so good that you can forget about the human being you are expecting to do the work. People first, programs second.
Another coaching influence of mine was my college coach Derik Fossum. He taught many great life lessons, but the biggest thing I took from him was “Adapt. Improvise. Overcome.” We can’t control many things in our lives, but we do control our reactions to those things and those three words always help center me.
A pop culture influence for me is Ted Lasso who taught me that negativity rarely solves a problem. Positivity and bringing others together for a common goal provides answers to problems you didn’t even know you had yet. Most importantly, believe in others and believe in belief.
RACING HISTORY
I have been racing since I was in 6th grade. I qualified for the state meet as a 7th grader and competed at the state meet the rest of my middle and high school career. I’ve run two half marathons. The first one was 85 degrees and the second one was in a snowstorm in Fremont, Nebraska. I haven’t done much racing the past few years due to a nagging Achilles injury that I finally overcame last year, but I am planning to get back into racing 5Ks and half marathons before moving on up to marathons in the next few years.
