3 Bests – What aspects of the race did you like the most?

  1. The views were amazing
  2. Very well organized
  3. Lots of pre & post race treat and goodies.

Not so much – Aspects of the race that didn’t do it for you

It’s a multi use trail so there was plenty of horse poop on the trail. I could have done without having to dodge that. It wasn’t terrible. It seemed to bother me more towards the end when I was tired and didn’t want to move over.

Highlights of your race – What did you do well and enjoy about your race in particular?

This was the first trail race I’ve done. It was really fun. Very challenging for me. The course and the views were fantastic.

Lessons you learned that will help you next time around

I need to run more on hills and trails. I do a little now but I need to incorporate that more into my running. It was a lot harder than I had anticipated.

Aesthetics – Is it a pretty course?

It’s gorgeous. It’s in the Lincoln Mountain Open Space south of Castle Rock, CO with spectacular views of Pikes Peak.

Difficulty – Is it a tough course?

I thought it was tough. I did the 4 mile loop. They also had an 8 mile course and a 6 hour challenge for ultra runners.

Organized and well run – Did it feel like a well-oiled machine or were they flying by the seat of their pants?

It was very well organized and supported.

Competition – Is there a strong field?

It’s a pretty small race. I think it is new. There were only about 50 people running from all different fitness levels.

Logistics – Does it require a special handshake, registration a year in advance, hotels all booked? Give us the low down on the nuts and bolts of making the race happen.

Easy to register for and get to. The parking is easy.

Aid Stations – Standard fare or anything special to know about the aid stations in terms of what’s available or when?

There were lots of aid stations on the course.

Weather and typical race conditions

The weather was warm and sunny. The trail is exposed so you get hot really fast.

Gear – Did you need anything special or is there anything you’d recommend for the next guy?

You don’t need anything special.

Spectators – Is this a friendly course for your friends?

There really isn’t any room to spectate on the trail. However, there was lots of space at the finish line. They had it all set up with lots of food and beverages including beer. They had a massage therapist there too for post race relief.

How’s the Swag?

Normal.

The Overall Score – How many stars do you give this race and do you recommend that others run it?

5 stars. I would do it again. I highly recommend it.
