Specialties

I coach runners of all levels, from those returning to the sport after years away to beginners building their first consistent routine. My focus is on road racing from 5K through the marathon, with an emphasis on creating sustainable, balanced training practices. I specialize in guiding athletes to stay consistent through life transitions or busy schedules, post-injury comebacks, and shifts in motivation – helping them rediscover running for joy, fitness, and personal achievement while still making progress toward their goals.

Philosophy

My coaching philosophy is built on balance: the balance between pushing for progress and allowing space for rest, between structure and flexibility, and between performance goals and the joy of the sport. I believe running should add to your life, not take away from it, so I focus on creating training that is both effective and sustainable.

I prioritize consistency over perfection, helping athletes build habits that last through life’s inevitable ups and downs. Every runner is unique, so I tailor plans to fit into real lives – accounting for work, family, stress, and recovery. At the core of my coaching is the belief that growth comes not just from running faster or longer, but from developing resilience, self-compassion, and confidence along the way.

Coaching Experience

I am a certified running coach with a background in both competitive and recreational running. After returning to the sport as an adult, I’ve worked with athletes navigating many of the same challenges I’ve faced myself – rebuilding after time away, finding consistency through busy schedules, and training with purpose while avoiding burnout.

My coaching experience includes working with beginners building their first structured plans, athletes coming back from injury, and runners aiming for personal bests in distances from 5K through the half-marathon. I bring a combination of technical knowledge, personal experience, and a supportive, accountability-driven style to help each athlete reach their goals in a sustainable way.

About Me

I’ve been a runner most of my life, first as a competitive track athlete and later as someone who turned to running for joy, healing, and personal growth. After stepping away from the sport for nearly a decade, I came back with a deeper appreciation for what running can offer beyond results: resilience, balance, and a way to move through life’s transitions.

Running has carried me through grief, career changes, and fresh starts, and that lived experience shapes the way I coach. I also compete in triathlons, which has deepened my understanding of endurance training, cross-training, and balancing multiple disciplines.

Outside of sport, I spent five years living in South America, which broadened my perspective and gave me a deep appreciation for adapting to new environments and cultures. I’m currently back in school, continuing to challenge myself and grow in new ways – something I encourage my athletes to do as well.

When I’m not coaching, training, or studying, you’ll usually find me outdoors, hiking, travelling, beating my partner at Scrabble, or enjoying time with the people (and dogs) I love.

Big Influences

My biggest influences aren’t just professional or elite athletes – they’re the friends and training partners who manage to balance it all. The runners who show up consistently year after year, while also bringing joy, positivity, and a sense of community to the sport. They remind me that running is about more than splits and finish times – it’s about connection, fun, and finding ways to keep the sport sustainable alongside the rest of life.

Race History

I grew up as a competitive runner, racing track and cross country through high school. Some of my proudest moments include helping my team place 3rd at OFSAA cross country and finishing 30th overall, as well as winning several semi-regional competitions. But with those accomplishments also came pressure that, at the time, felt overwhelming. That’s part of why I stepped away from the sport for nearly a decade.

When I returned, it was with a fresh perspective – this time running not just for results, but for balance, joy, and personal growth. Since then, I’ve raced everything from 5Ks to half marathons, completed my first marathon in 2024 (qualifying for Boston), and embraced triathlon training. Today, I see racing as a way to challenge myself while still making space for my career, social life, and well-being – an approach I also bring into my coaching.

    Eric –

Sam has been great! Helped set up a routine and appropriately scale distance and effort. Super easy to work with and has been the main reason for my sticking with running and doing well!

    Brent Sullivan –

Loved every minute of working with Sam! She helped me accomplish a goal of mine that I had for years in completing a full ironman. I was not the easiest client with my work schedule, young family, and crazy lifestyle but she did her best to accommodate yet also prioritize the workouts needed to complete. Her personality was great and her ability to relate to you as an athlete was something I really enjoyed. I’ll certainly be working with her again once I’m ready to race again, full Ironman is no joke! I owe alot of it to Sam!

    Naomi –

Sam was absolutely instrumental in the completion of my first Ironman 70.3.
To start, she made sure to meet with me to discuss my goals for this race and create a plan that would fit with those and my busy lifestyle. Throughout, she always made sure to check-in to see how I was feeling (mind and body!!) and if anything needed change. She was very flexible and accommodating, understanding that it was important for me to balance training, a busy school schedule and social life.

I’ve learned a lot working with her on the importance of listening to your body, working hard for yourself and prioritizing your well-being. Herself being an incredible and experienced athlete, I also appreciated all the tips and tricks she could give for training and surrounding race day. Because of all this I was able to complete my first ever 70.3 with no injuries and a smile on my face! There are no doubts that I will continue working with her for future races!

    Tyler Cochrane –

Sam has coached me through two half marathon PRs and my first Olympic distance and 70.3 triathlon. Her guidance in meeting myself where I’m at (fatigue and readiness for a workout) and assistance in realistic goal setting has changed how I view myself in sport and made me a much smarter and healthier athlete. My work schedule is often all over the place, but Sam takes the time to strategically program and explain the importance of key workouts; what can be modified, and working rest into days I won’t be able to train. I would definitely recommend working with Sam!

    Kayla Peckham –

I am really happy with Samantha.

She’s very responsive and provides variety in the daily runs + helps me work around life events. She’s good at asking how my body is feeling so that we can train appropriately and respond to what the body is saying.

She understands the aspects that makes running fun such as socialization, and also how effort impacts training to get the best results.

She helped me PB my last race (half marathon) by 7 mins when I thought going into my build before I signed up with her that I would just do OK. Her workouts helped me avoid the dreaded bonking and I felt strong the whole time. I am excited to continue working with her.
