Specialties
I specialize in working with athletes who have active, physically demanding jobs and those returning from injury. My employment can see me burn over 5,000 calories per day without any training, and juggling that with 100 miler training is a challenge.
Philosophy
I work with the whole person to fit training around your life demands, customizing each program for the individual and where they are in their running journey. Consistency, becoming comfortable with discomfort and progressive loading are the core of my individualized plans, structure to get you to your goals. It’s important to have fun while you’re out there, whether that’s by incorporating mountains, fun runs or adventures.
Coaching Experience
- 1 year of ultrarunning coaching
- Canoeing instructor & river guide
About Me
My story with running is intertwined with overcoming negative assessments and demoralizing opinions, and my goal with coaching is to keep you healthy and return you to what you love to do: run. I was the very back of the pack for cross-country in elementary school, then stopped most physical activity altogether after my 9th grade PE class walked away while I was trying to finish the Cooper test. That was a big blow and I forsake any further running until after graduated. My Kinesiology professor as a freshman was the inspiration for me to begin Ironman training. The first step was a marathon, in 2000, which I finished with pain in both legs, leading to the first three “you’ll never run again” misdiagnoses before I was 20.
I eventually read Born to Run, threw away the ridiculous orthotics which aggravated my symptoms, and went barefoot. I built up to running three miles without stopping, and gradually progressed from there. There is a huge gap in my racing history from May 2000 to October 2020 as I tried various modalities to sort out injuries. I have yet to enter a triathlon, but have found enjoyment in big mountain days and running ultramarathons. My goals now are to finish without injury, and to smile while I’m out on the trails.
My running journey also involves taking a 14 day field course with the Boulder Outdoor Survival School, where we were completely disconnected from modern technology for two weeks of backpacking through the Utah desert and mountains. That deepened my connection with the natural world, and showed me firsthand the importance of being grounded, disconnecting from noise of modern life, and just being present outdoors. That is still a key theme of my personal training.
Big Influences
The major influence in my personal running journey has been proving doctors wrong: I’ve been told I’ll never run again over a dozen times by the medical system. Strength training, cross training, and the use of holistic modalities have brought me back from over a decade of cycling and hiking to finishing a 100 miler in 2024. My mind is open to creative possibilities and holistic, whole-person perspectives, and my coaching is focused on the whole person. Everyone has life stress, work stress, relationships, and unforeseen events before ever getting out on a trail; how we can manage and sync all those factors while building strength and endurance for adventures is my forte.
Some of the theories I’ve infused into training are from Jason Koop, Megan & David Roche, the Boulder Outdoor Survival School, and my own trial and error, particularly with barefoot and zero drop footwear. The use of heat and cold therapy, dry needling, energetic modalities to support physical recovery and emotional processing, and grounding for enhanced recovery keep me active and improving.
I am also a Certified BodyTalk Practitioner, Reiki master and proponent of natural healing. These modalities support my self-coaching, and I am pleased to offer sessions to clients both in-person and remotely, as they have supported my journey through injuries, abrupt job losses, and tumultuous situations.
Race History
I have competed across a wide range of ultramarathon distances and terrain, including 24 hour events, mountain 100 kilometer races, and technical East Coast trail ultras. This experience allows me to guide athletes through pacing, fueling, terrain management, and the mental demands of long events.
I have consistently finished in the top quarter of competitive regional trail ultras, with multiple top twenty percent and top ten percent performances. I have also completed several Fastest Known Times on local routes, reflecting a long term commitment to exploration, consistency, and learning through the process.
