Specialties

With 20 years of experience in trail, ultra and mountain running I excel at working with athletes who want to challenge themselves on dirt and in the mountains. Whether that be your first trail race/ultra, running a mountain or pursuing your own self-devised adventure, I’m here to support runners of all levels, helping them succeed to the best of their ability.

I also have unique experience working with athletes who have chronic health conditions (like asthma, ADHD, Autoimmune diseases and diabetes) that require special considerations.

Philosophy

Each athlete has unique strengths and weaknesses and is looking to challenge themselves in different ways. My role is to help you create a structured plan that fits your personal needs, abilities and goals and to challenge and push you to meet those goals and beyond. None of us are the same, so no two training plans should be exactly the same.

Coaching Experience

In addition to my lengthy running career, I’ve spent many years mentoring beginner and intermediate trail runners in my various communities, both those who are new to the sport and those attempting some of the biggest mountain runs in the US (like Hardrock, UTMB and Nolans14). I also have extensive experience mountain running (backcountry on and off trail), creating logistical plans for long distance races/runs, planning run-cations, teaching backcountry navigation and survival courses and helping to put on trail races.

About Me

Starting my outdoor career as a mountaineer and peakbagger, I was introduced to ultrarunning in 2005 as a means for traveling more efficiently through the mountains and on the trails. After running my first ultramarathon in 2006 (Bishop High Sierra 50mi) I was hooked by the wonderful community, supportive culture and beauty of the mountains and trails. My running career has focused on tackling both extremely challenging trail races (50k-100mi) and novel and iconic long-distance trail runs all over the world. I thrive in self-supported and unsupported environments where I can explore the trails and move through nature unimpeded. One of my long-term running projects is to run a self-designed ultramarathon in every (possible) US National Park as a way to explore the wonders that are our National Parks.

When I’m not running and wandering the mountains I work as an Immunology Research Scientist, lift weights, play soccer/volleyball and work with children (ages 3-12). I enjoy sharing my scientific knowledge with the broader community and fostering a love of science and nature in the next generation of youths.

Big Influences

The original stories about Nolans14 (circa 1999-2002) were what drew me into the sport of ultramarathon and long-distance mountain running. The idea of combining the two disciplines of mountaineering and long-distance trail running is what hooked me on the sport and is where my true passion lies. On a regular basis I am inspired by runners fast and slow at every Ultra event I attend, watching them struggle and push themselves beyond their limits and what they thought was possible.

Race History

I’ve completed over 50 Ultramarathons from 50k-100mi including many challenging mountain races: 3x Hardrock 100mi, UTMB top 100, Western States 100, Leadville 100 (total of 12x 100mi finishes), 3x San Juan Solstice 50mi.

2x Boston Marathon finisher (both sub-3h).

I’m most excited about non-race long distance mountain running.

Some of my favorite long distance runs I’ve completed are the Nolans14, 3x Grand Canyon R2R2R, 13x Aspen Four Pass Loop, Tour de Mont Blanc, Soft Rock, Zion Traverse and the Great Smoky SCAR.
