Specialties
I coach busy, recreational runners to complete distances from a half-marathon up to 100 miles.
Runners come to me when:
- they want to achieve a “life goal” distance
- they want to set a distance PR
- they Googled “marathon/ultramarathon training plan” and felt lost infinity-scrolling results
- they want to go deeper than a cookie cutter training plan
- they want a structured training plan but don’t have the time, expertise, or energy to build their own
I also specialize in coaching active duty military personnel and full-time students.
What’s included: An individualized training plan, updated weekly; race selection tips + race day logistics, pacing, and fueling plans; 24-hour response time with unlimited text/email support.
Philosophy
I teach real people to run real far.
Teach: My goal over time is for you to be able to make the best judgment calls about your own training because you understand how to run, not just what workout to do. To that end, I emphasize the “why” behind training phase — aerobic base, Vo2 max, lactate threshold, endurance, and race-specific preparation. One day, we won’t be working together any more. I will have succeeded if on that day you feel confident planning your own training cycle.
Real People: You are not “Client #43,” my “two-o’clock,” or a profile on a running app. You are a real person with other commitments, interests, and obligations outside of running. My responsibility and joy as a coach is getting to know you and building a training plan that fits your life and makes both it and running as enjoyable as possible.
Coaching Experience
I self-coached myself to my first ultra finish in 2022 and began coaching other Special Operations soldiers in 2025. I’ve coached runners to every distance between a half marathon and 50 miles, including multiple first-time ultra runners. The current completion rate of target races among my athletes is 100%. I’m also a student of Kelsey McGill’s, a professional running coach with 10+ years’ experience and multiple ultra finishes up to 250 miles, including several podiums — so I’m learning too!
After I discharged from the military in January 2026, I moved to Los Angeles, California to attend graduate school at UCLA. In LA, I’ve become a go-to resource for running tips among my class, my social and professional network, and 5000+ social media followers.
About Me
I’m a US Army Special Operations veteran, endurance coach, and athlete — and I’m the last person anyone expected to be any of those things.
Growing up, I avoided sports. I was a gay teenager who loved theater in a small town in the American South where being gay wasn’t welcomed. The jocks at my school sensed I was different and excluded me from their world.
In college, I studied acting and journalism. I was always fascinated by Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, a storytelling framework that outlined the transformation of a protagonist into a hero by going on an adventure. When I graduated, I realized I’d never gone on an adventure and asked myself, if I did, what would I be most scared to do? The answer: hold my own in the most hyper-competitive, hyper-masculine space in the world. I decided to try out for a Special Operations military unit.
I got in and served in the military for six years with several deployments to East Asia. I thought I’d continue working for the government, but life had other plans.
In 2022, I had a very difficult year in my personal life. “Rock bottom” was the day I realized that if I was going to survive my circumstances, I needed evidence that I was stronger than I thought. So I decided to attempt the hardest physical challenge I could think of. But what would that be — a marathon? No, I knew lots of people who’d run marathons. “But aren’t there people who run farther than marathons?” There were. I decided I’d run an ultra marathon.
I trained for 18 months and in February 2024, ran my first 55K in Moab, UT. I almost DNFed and came in almost last place, but I finished. I’d also caught the endurance bug, and the next year, resolved to run even farther. I started working with a coach, and as other SOF soldiers asked me to train them, became a coach myself.
Since 2022, I’ve run every distance from a 5K to 100 miles, including the Boston Marathon and a UTMB World Major 100-miler. I’ve also become interested in other extreme endurance sports, and in June 2028, will be competing in World’s Toughest Row Pacific, a rowing race from California to Hawaii.
In the Hero’s Journey, one of the archetypal characters is “the guide” — think Gandalf, Dumbledore, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Now that I’ve lived my transformation from insecure teenager to out veteran, endurance coach, and athlete, my joy now is being a guide for runners at the beginning of their own hero’s journeys, whether that journey culminates in a marathon or 100-miler.
At its best, running is transformative. You never finish a training cycle the same person as when you started. As a coach, I consider it a privilege to help guide athletes along that path.
