Philosophy

I started out running as a middle school track and cross country athlete and discovered how running can be a metaphor for life by teaching us how to overcome obstacles to work towards your goals. I underwent open heart surgery in middle school due to a congenital heart defect and realized the recovery and return to running involved many physical and psychological struggles. I believe that working through these struggles and going on to become a collegiate athlete not only gave me more strength to face everyday hurdles in life but also provided me with the compassion, empathy and drive to help others reach their goals in running as well as in life. After competing in collegiate track and field and cross country, running remained a huge part of my life and identity. I now believe that running and leading an active life truly is a lifestyle and I went on to earn my doctorate of physical therapy so that I can best help others reach their goals and/or maintain the ability to lead an active lifestyle. Since graduation, I have not only been able to help clients return to engaging in activities they love following surgeries, injuries, and traumatic health conditions but have also been able to discover the excitement of other outdoor activities including adventure racing, cross country skiing, biking, and hiking in the mountains. I have a new appreciation for what a healthy body can do beyond the track with the goal of longevity in the sport. I believe that long-term success in running is multifactorial and requires attention to strength and core training, injury prevention, proper nutrition, and mental state. I also believe that having confidence in yourself has a huge impact on racing/running capabilities. Consistency and sustainability are very important in longevity of running, and running can definitely fit into a busy schedule. Finally, I believe that living the running and active/outdoorsy lifestyle is what makes us feel alive! I hope to be able to help more athletes stay healthy and be able to enjoy the beauty and joy that comes from exploring the world on your feet.

Coaching Experience

I have been designing individualized plans to help clients progress towards their goals on a daily basis as a physical therapist of 6 years. I have also coached a middle school summer track club over the course of 5 years. In addition, I have done personal coaching for high school cross country athletes.

About Me

Hi! I have been a runner since middle school and went on to run collegiately and beyond. I enjoy all things adventurous and outdoorsy. My husband and I hiked our first 14,000 ft elevation mountain together in 2020 and did our first adventure race together in 2023. I have also been a physical therapist for about 6 years now and know the importance of strength training and proactive care/training. Outside of running, I love spending time with family, swimming, biking, kayaking, cross country skiing, hiking, reading, playing the piano, baking (I often experiment and stray from the recipe – sometimes it turns out better than others), family/friend game nights, and learning new things (I am a lifelong learner and love sifting through research studies). My husband and I had our first baby this year and are entering into a new adventure and lots of love and learning! 🙂

Big Influences

Collegiate and high school coaches have impacted my coaching style; my high school coach believed that having confidence in yourself and your potential was one of the most important aspects of racing; my college coach utilized scientific approaches to pacing and workouts and taught me the importance of taking rest/easy days. My education and career as a physical therapist has also influenced my training style as I take a holistic approach to running now and know the importance of strength training and injury prevention.

Race History

One race that stands out as a key moment in my running career is when a ran a 5k PR of over a minute about 5 years after college, while working full-time as a physical therapist and planning a wedding. I felt that I was actually able to change my training to fit my busy schedule as well as being able to hone in on my sleep, strength training and nutrition. I took pride in my ability to coach myself to better times and to get more enjoyment out of running after competing collegiately.

Another race that stands out in my running career is when I ran the 800 meter leg of the distance medley relay at nationals in college to lead my relay team to a second place finish and my team (UW La-Crosse) placed second overall at the national meet. Racing at Drake Relays for 4 years in a row also taught me how to compete under pressure.

Additionally, competing in my first Adventure Race (Rib Mountain Adventure Challenge – 8 hour challenge) with my husband and our friends was also an awesome experience. We have placed 3rd in our division in the biggest adventure race in the country for two consecutive years. I have learned so much about finding the joy and excitement in exploring the trails and navigating through the wilderness during adventure racing.

Finally, I had open heart surgery in middle school for a congenital heart abnormality. The condition is now resolved, however, I can definitely appreciate the physical and psychological struggles of returning to running and competing after a major setback.
