Specialties

I bring both firsthand experience and a supportive coaching approach to every athlete I coach. Whether it is training for a local race or a big mountain adventure, I have the tools to help my athletes succeed.

With nearly 20 years of personal running experience, I understand the importance of balancing training with the demands of life and family.

I am passionate about working with runners of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned athletes, from 5k newbies to aspiring ultramarathoners.

Philosophy

The real joy in running and training lies in setting meaningful challenges, developing the skills needed to meet them, and ultimately achieving success. It’s this journey—combining hard work with enjoyment—that makes the process truly rewarding.

My core philosophy is that growth and improvement should be both purposeful and enjoyable. I believe that progress comes from consistent effort, dedication, and finding time for training within the demands of everyday life.

Coaching is central to this philosophy, as it creates the framework for intentional progress while keeping running fulfilling and sustainable.

Coaching Experience

I have been a valuable resource for friends and peers throughout their running journeys, offering guidance and support drawn from years of personal experience. Helping others achieve their goals through informed, experience-based advice is something I’m deeply passionate about.

As a seasoned marathon and ultramarathon runner—completing numerous marathons, ultras, and 100-mile races over the last 15 years—I enjoy sharing the insights, strategies, and lessons that have come from facing and overcoming a wide range of challenges.

About Me

I grew up playing soccer, but it was always the feeling of running and being outdoors that truly lit me up. After college, life moved quickly—marriage, a few relocations, and then the joy of welcoming our son. Somewhere amid all that change, I found myself out of shape and searching for something to reconnect with. That’s when running truly found me.

It began with 5Ks and half marathons, often with my son in a jogging stroller, and later, riding his bike beside me. Those early miles weren’t just about building endurance—they were about creating memories, finding balance, and carving out time for what mattered most.

When we eventually moved to the Pacific Northwest, I discovered the trails and fell in love all over again. The forests, mountains, and winding paths felt like home. Trail ultras became a natural extension of the marathons and triathlons I already enjoyed, and they integrated beautifully with our family’s love for backpacking and biking.

Now, with our son in college, running still connects us. Whether it’s on the road or deep in the woods, we continue to share this passion as a family. There’s almost always a race or goal on the calendar—something that keeps us motivated and moving forward.

Over the years, I’ve come to believe that coaching doesn’t just help us train smarter—it makes us better athletes, runners and people, inside and out. It brings accountability, insight, and connection to the process, and helps us discover what we’re truly capable of. That’s what I love about coaching: it’s not just about crossing a finish line, but growing stronger, more confident, and more inspired with every step.

Big Influences

When I first started running it was the big names around the Boston Marathon and such. Bill Rogers and Joan Benoit (and of course Steve Prefontaine) were legends that I heard of (and I even met Bill Rogers in Boston once).

Then it was more modern runners like Meb Keflezighi, Des Linden, Kara Goucher and Ryan Hall that motivated me as I tried to hone my marathon times.

And as I started running more ultras and 100 milers I was fascinated by Scott Jurek and Ann Transon’s domination. But I got to run along-side some of my more recent influences like Tim Olson, Ellie Greenwood, Jeff Browning and Rob Krar. But now I love the newer faces that are giving ultra running some new life like Kilian, Courtney and Walmsley!

Race History

I’ve completed over 20 marathons and qualified for Boston twice. I’ve also run well over 60 ultras and fourteen trail 100 Mile finishes.

I’ve also completed the R2R2R (Rim to rim to rim of the Grand Canyon) in one run as well as the Cactus to Clouds Trail, Wonderland trail (around Mt. Rainier), Loowit Trail (around St. Helens) and Section J of the PCT. I’ve also crewed and paced at Badwater 135, HURT 100 and HardRock 100.

I don’t just train for racing, I also train for fun, big adventures but finishing Western States 100 was probably one of my key training/racing moments!

Awards & Accolades

I’ve won a couple local ultras but finishing a 100 mile race every year for seven years, to qualify and then run Western States 100 is high on my list.

  1. 5 out of 5

Michael has been such an encouraging and thoughtful coach while I was training for a 50k. We talked through my training history, including injuries and what I hoped to improve. He wrote me a plan every week with workouts that scaled. It was so incredibly helpful to have each day planned out for me. There were a few hiccups along the way in terms of injuries, but he was so quick to adjust the plan. loved having that flexibility.

Beyond that, he was so encouraging throughout all the ups and downs. There were definitely runs and workouts that felt so hard, but he reminded me that I was still doing good work, all still building blocks to the larger program.

    Richard Torres

Before coaching, I was stuck running the same routes without structure and had plateaued. Michael introduced a clear, well-organized training plan that fit my schedule and provided consistent progression. Within a few months, I completed my first race, and my overall endurance improved dramatically.

What stands out most is how effectively the training scaled. Distances that once represented my longest runs are now comfortable easy days, and my current long runs are more than three times the distance I was able to sustain when we started—without injury or burnout.

Michael is highly responsive and detail-oriented. He regularly provides thoughtful feedback on my runs and is always available to discuss fueling, workouts, data, routes, and local race options. The coaching feels personalized and collaborative, not generic.

Just as importantly, his encouragement and confidence in the process helped me take on challenges I previously doubted I could handle. I’d strongly recommend Michael to anyone looking for structured, intelligent coaching that delivers real results.
