Running Coach Description
As a varsity track athlete and experienced coach, Vancouver running coach Ryan Goudron specializes in training for track events (400m–10,000m), shorter road races (5K/10K), and return-to-run programs post-injury. He coaches runners of all levels—from beginners finding their stride to competitive athletes chasing PBs. His coaching blends experience on the track and in the gym, offering personalized programming, general strength training, and video form analysis.
Ryan’s philosophy is built on enjoyment, adaptability, and playing to your strengths. Training should be something you look forward to, and his goal is to keep it engaging, sustainable, and customized to your life. He’s coached youth, high school, and adult athletes, including dozens of provincial medalists and over 10 athletes who went on to compete at the university level. He also brings experience working with varsity athletes in a strength training setting.
Currently studying Kinesiology at the University of British Columbia, Ryan is a competitive 800m runner and aspiring physiotherapist. He loves the outdoors, playing team sports, and finding new ways to stay active. Coaching is where he brings all those passions together to help runners improve, stay healthy, and enjoy the journey.
Specialties
Being a track and field athlete myself, I specialize in coaching track events (400m-10,000m) as well as shorter road races (5k/10k). I would love to work with runners of any level – beginner or very experienced! I also specialize in return to run programs post injury. I combine my experiences on the track/road with my experience in the gym as well, and can provide general strength programs as well as video form analysis.
Philosophy
My coaching philosophy is backed by a few core values; Enjoyment, Adaptability and Strengths.
- Enjoyment: As runners, we spend the vast majority of our time training versus competing, so it should be enjoyable! This training can become monotonous at times, so I aim to make my programs interesting and engaging for athletes, based on their individual schedule, preferences and goals.
- Adaptability: Training can sometimes take unexpected turns. It is important to learn to recognize these turns and how to manage them, rather than pushing straight through. In the long run this will help with injury prevention and reduce burnout.
- Strengths: Every athlete has a different set of strengths and weaknesses for running, and I design my programs based on the strengths. This ensures athletes are confident and excited for training which is equally important as being physically prepared.
Coaching Experience
I began coaching in 2018, starting with youth track and field athletes. Since, Ive coached many elementary and high school aged athletes in track and field and cross country. I have also worked with many adults mainly in road running. I have coached more than 10 athletes who went on to commit to university track teams, and dozens who have earned provincial medals. I also have valuable experience coaching in the weight room, where I’ve worked with hundreds of varsity athletes at a competitive university.
About Me
I love the outdoors! I spend as much time as I can outside, whether this is hiking, camping or swimming at the beach. In my off season I love playing other sports like beach volleyball, soccer and basketball.
I am currently studying at the University of British Columbia and aspire to earn my Masters in Physical Therapy to pursue a career as a physiotherapist while also coaching as much as possible. I’m a member of the varsity track and field team where I compete mainly in the 800m, and also in the 400m and 1500m.
Big Influences
The people with the biggest influence on my coaching, have been the coaches I have worked with, both as an athlete and as a fellow coach. As a high school athlete, I had the privilege of having an extremely supportive and caring coach. This experience left me hoping to contribute the same compassion and heart to athletes I coach through. My experience as a coach has also been shaped by the athletes I coach, where I have learned how to balance performance, enjoyment of the sport and demands of life for many different individuals. Coming from a running background myself, I know what training and competing can be like, and I hope I can help others learn through these experiences.
Race History
I started my running career like many, starting in elementary school, competing in every distance for fun. It wasn’t until high school that I began taking my training and competing seriously.
Through high school I had several key races in my development as an athlete. This includes anchoring the BC High School 4x400m winning team, coming 4th in the 1500m steeplechase at nationals, and setting a huge PR in the UW High School invitational. These races showed me how powerful sport can be for forming relationships, overcoming disappointment and surprising yourself.
I went on to commit to the University of British Columbia track and field and cross country team. At UBC, I’ve earned NAIA All American honors twice and earned a silver medal in the conference 800m in 2022. I also experienced long periods of injury and sickness which taught me loads about recovering and staying focused on long term goals. I have been on two provincial track and field teams and was the 4th fastest U20 athlete in Canada in the 800m in my freshman year.
