Philosophy
Running is a simple activity but the reasons for its popularity and ability to draw people in are not. Runners seek to improve their times, make new friends, or endeavor on bigger adventures. Some runners discover new things about themselves in the course of their practice. Running has real meaning for people. As a coach I try to understand what sport means to the athlete and support that meaning with sound training advice based on robust principles and years of experience.
Coaching Experience
I have been coaching myself as well as teammates and friends for about ten years, since 2016. Initially it was mostly cycling and in recent years I have taken up ultra trail running. I now coach several athletes, some cyclists and some runners. I also have some experience racing and coaching triathlon.
About Me
I started my journey in endurance sports as a cyclist, and after my racing career ended in 2020 due to COVID-19, I fell in love with the adventure aspect of cycling. This quickly led me to bike packing, fast packing, and mountaineering.
I love to do something different every day, and I believe that breadth as an athlete is an underrated quality. Because of this, I frequently enjoy trips up to the Sierras or other local mountain ranges for training runs, as well overnight runs and other multi day adventures.
Big Influences
Scott Johnston has blown up in popularity recently, and for good reason. His ultra endurance training philosophy has many admirable qualities. Among these, two stand out:
1. The emphasis on low-intensity training focused on increasing the physiological thresholds
2. The use of gym-based muscular endurance training for ultra runners
These techniques are as old as running but modern training theory supports their use as foundational to any runner’s fitness.
Renato Canova is another well established coach, and his philosophy has made many great runners over the years. Specifically, his ideas around workout design and progression influence my own thinking on the subject.
