SPECIALTIES

I am able to help you achieve individual running goals whether it be your first race, or a Boston Qualifier. I am able to meet you where you are and help you along this journey to those goals. I am able to help keep you accountable with your unique and personal running goals no matter what they may be. I understand the holistic approach to coaching and I want to help you achieve those goals!

My specialties also include:

  • Coaching from 1500 m on the track to the marathon on the roads.
  • Implementing specific strength training for each specialty distance.
  • Assisting with preventing injury and getting back to sport from surgery.
  • Tapering training plans for individuals who live and train at sea level, to heat training, to high altitude training.

PHILOSOPHY

Every person has the ability to achieve any goal they set their sights on. I believe each individual has the capability of climbing over any barriers they may face. I understand that there is not a one size fits all training program. Every runner has specified individual abilities and when a runner’s focus remains positive, the approach to training and racing outcome will be much more enjoyable.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

I have 15 years coaching experience that began with supporting the youth during various Summer track programs in South Texas from 2010 – 2016. When I moved to Flagstaff, AZ in 2017 I was a volunteer cross country coach at Flagstaff High School from 2017 – 2019. I have personally coach individual’s periodically over the past 6 years.

ABOUT ME

I am a south Texas native, (McAllen, Rio Grande Valley), who began running distance over 20 years ago. I was an All- State Cross Country and Track athlete in High School (McAllen High School). I then competed for a NCAA Division University, University of Texas – Pan American after High School, and then finished up at the University of Texas at San Antonio. I made the move to Flagstaff, AZ in 2017 to continue the pursuit of a marathon and track Olympic Trials Qualifier. I have recently been temporarily sidelined due to arthroscopic hip surgery on December 28, 2022. I have since been recovering properly and have continued my own running. I am a rabbitElite athlete as well. I am pursuing my running goals, while working an 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday job. Able to understand the other life commitments of an athlete who works a full time job.

BIG INFLUENCES

  • My biggest influence of how I conduct my training philosphy is Jack Daniels (running coach), not Jack Daniel’s Tennesee Whiskey.

“To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.” -Steve Prefontaine

RACING HISTORY

I have always had the ambition and goal of achieving the Olympic Trials Qualifier for the 10000 m on the track or the marathon. It was not until 2017 when I made the move to Flagstaff, AZ that the opportunity became more of a reality. I found a job working in the SPED department of Flagstaff HS in pursuit of my lofty goal. Through the years I had struggled with pain in my left hip and I did everything I could to push through the pain. I PR’ed in every distance from 10k to half marathon, to marathon from 2018 to 2020. I put everything on the line at the Chevron Houston Marathon on (01/19/2020) to try and hit the marathon Olympic Trials Qualifier at the time. This also being my very first marathon ever. I came up short with a time of 2:25:39. I felt defeated but hopeful. I continued to train in pursuit of the next 4 years. As stated above, I finally found answers to all my questions and the pain I constantly felt while doing what I love. It was discovered Fall 2022 that I had a hip labrum tear. I went in for surgery December 28, 2022 knowing this may pause my pursuit of trying to achieve the Olympic Trials Qualifier for this cycle. 5 months later (May 2023), I am back running and feeling better than ever in pursuit of hopefully achieving my goal this Fall 2023. I look forward to helping anyone that allows me the joy and pleasure of assisting you in achieving any goal you set your sights on.

Angel is a wonderful coach! He helped me prepare for my first ever marathon (SF 2024). Throughout the process, he was very attentive to my personal goals and what I wanted to get out of the experience. After discussing them, Angel tailored my training plan to fit my needs. It felt great to have a coach who could be flexible and adaptable, especially since I have a full time job and needed to find the time to train. On days where my body wasn’t cooperating or I picked up injuries, Angel was able to quickly adapt my program to help me recover and get back to where I needed to be to continue training. I also asked many questions during my training to learn more about running and Angel was very informative and helpful in answering them. I’d recommend Angel to anyone who’s trying to run their first marathon!

Angel has been an amazing coach for my son. We initially engaged his help to work on some technique stuff as my son is new to the sport. He did not disappoint and has provided lots of time and attention through a combination of virtual and in person coaching. My son has been steadily increasing his speed and endurance while avoiding overuse injury. I could not recommend a running coach more highly and it continues to be a ln amazing experience.

We been working together since December 2023. Within that time I’ve drastically improved my health and my running. In only a few weeks I PR’d my first 5k by nearly 2 min while working together. He’s very knowledgeable and responds to you at any time. I went with his running and strength program which has helped me stay strong for all my runs. Coach Angel will continue to be my coach for a very long time as I continue my journey.

Coach Ramirez is a very knowledgable person and coach. The quality of coaching that he brings is incredible. He really takes the time to meet you where you’re at and tailor your training so you can get the very best from it. We started working together back in October 2023 and in just a short few months helped me PR my half marathon at the Arizona RNR. What I love most is that since I work a full time job, Angel was able to help me get my training in and keep me accountable around my work hours. He was always so prompt with his reponses to all my questions and made sure I showed up to the starting line healthy and ready to run.
I enjoyed how he always encouraged me to do my best, not give up, and believed in my abilities to achieve my goals.
I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to work with him and would recommend anyone to work with Angel.
I highly recommend Angel to be your coach for any goals you have set infront of you!

Angel is a fantastic coach! He really listens to your feedback and does a great job checking in with you about how your training is going. Being a triathlete and cyclist, my training schedule does a lot more than just running and Angel does an amazing job taking into consideration the other stuff that’s going on in my life. He is definitely the coach you want to look out for to help you improve your overall fitness and running regardless of the level that you’re coming in at!

Great amazing coach! Takes time to inform you on everything you can do to improve your run and reduce injuries while you run. He is very considerate and checks in to make sure you are doing well and the training is working for your specific goals. I have improved drastically since I’ve had him as my coach. I definitely recommend having him as a coach!
