SPECIALTIES

I am interested in coaching runners of all levels, but I am especially passionate about beginners. If you are training for your first ever 5k, your first marathon, or you are looking to PR in any distance for the 5k distance or longer, I can tailor a plan especially for you to achieve these goals. Another thing I have experience with is training AND coaching overweight runners.

Some of my specialties include:

  • Making running enjoyable
  • Mental conditioning (goal-setting, mental toughness, motivation techniques, etc.)
  • Building endurance (base-building)
  • Speed development
  • Injury prevention and recovery
  • Strength training
  • Increasing your VO2 max
  • Improving running form

PHILOSOPHY

The most important tenant of my coaching philosophy is differentiation. I do NOT believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to coaching. One thing I know for sure from personal experience is that no single plan works the same for every person. I will make each plan with the individual in mind. When doing this, I will take into account your previous running history, goals, motivation level, time constraints, and many other things.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

While I have never formally coached for an organization, I have coached several friends, colleagues, and family members.

I have coached people who are beginning to exercise for the first time, and experienced runners who are trying to PR.

Here are just two examples:

  • a 45-year-old man who was obese and had no running experience to run a 5k in 26:58 and a 5 miler in 48:26. When he started, he could not jog the width of a football field.
  • a 26-year-old woman who had no running experience and wanted to run a half marathon. She could not run for more than two minutes at first, and a year later, she ran a 2:22:39 in her half!

ABOUT ME

I live in the Philadelphia area with my wife, Kelly and my son and daughter. I first began running to get in shape for soccer the summer before seventh grade. It didn’t take long for me to realize I loved running for its own sake. Soon, I was fixated on improving my mile time. I joined the track team that Spring, and after that, I became a runner year-round! Other than running itself, my favorite thing to do during that time was motivate my other teammates. When I was an upperclassman in high school, I especially enjoyed mentoring the younger runners on the team. I also ran in college at Temple University.

Now, when I am not running or coaching, I am either working on writing a new book or spending time with my family.

Some of my favorite things about running are: it can be quite s asocial activity, it relieves stress, and it is meditative.

BIG INFLUENCES

  • Alberto Salazar
  • Jack Daniels
  • Mark Wetmore (Head coach for CU men’s distance)
  • Jeff Galloway (1972 Olympian in the 10,000 meters)
  • Pete Pfitzinger

RACING HISTORY

I have had a long, complicated relationship with racing and running. I ran competitively in high school and college. You’ll notice that all of my PRs are from that era. I have run at the Pennsylvania State Championship, NCAA Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Championship, the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship, among many others. I have also run close to 100 road races ranging mostly from 5k-10k.

After a 16 1/2 year hiatus from the sport, I am now focusing my own training on half marathons and full marathons.
