SPECIALTIES
Coaching is my life’s passion and it doesn’t matter if you are a complete beginner hoping to get something going or a seasoned pro. My specialty is blending the art of coaching with the science of coaching. This means that every person is unique and requires a keen eye and someone with the ability to meet them where they are and develop them properly without rushing the timeline. I’m a motivator by nature and aim to inspire athletes of all abilities to find their “why” and then get after getting after it. On the track, I specialize in the Steeplechase, 800m, 1500/1600, 3k/3200, 5k, 10k.
PHILOSOPHY
My philosophy is pretty simple- make the training fun. Make it a perfect fit with where you are at in your own personal journey. Implement workouts that gradually overload the body while taking the essential rest needed to recover and become stronger. Staying healthy and injury free is the key to it all; the longer you can put training days together, the strong you will be. Also, not everyone is looking to be the very best….an important part of my coaching style is not to get out of you what I want, its for you to tell ME what YOU want, and then my job is to get you there in the best way possible.
COACHING EXPERIENCE
In my 14 years as a coach I have coached or assisted: 5 NCAA National Champions, 13 All-Americans, 53 Conference Champions, many National qualifiers, countless school records and personal records. I have coached young up and comers to make their schools team and excel. I have taken clients who had never run a step, and wanted to run a 5k without stopping, to times that shocked them. I have coached Ironman triathletes, and Ultramarathons with great success.
ABOUT ME
I was an all state athlete in high school with big dreams to run at the highest levels in the sport. I had lots of talent but also discovered that I was severely anemic, which ultimately ended my future dreams. I still competed for BYU in college and then went on to establish myself as a college coach. Coaching is my way of living my dreams through others. I find incredible joy in seeing people achieve things that they didn’t know they could. Although my fastest races have long been run, I still find purpose and meaning in challenging the limits of our current state. No matter your circumstance, you can always ask a question of yourself that you don’t know the answer to and that is exciting. Finding the answers to these questions is what I love.
BIG INFLUENCES
I grew up with many incredible coaches to learn from. None great than my own father Patrick Shane, who coached for 36yrs at BYU and did everything there is to do as a coach. His training philosophy was a hybrid of many great coaches before him (Jack Daniels, Joe Vigil, Vin Lananna) but ultimately his style was all about being the proper steward for his athletes. Mentoring them in life and staying connected in a holistic manner to get the most out of each without burning anyone out.
RACING HISTORY
I’ve personally raced competitively all distances on the track from 800 and up. I have competed in thousands of races in my lifetime including; 4 Ironman triathlons, 6 one hundred mile trail races, and countless other spartan, tough mudder type races. I have only not finished one race in my life and believe that if you can start the race, you can finish it….even if you have to walk or crawl.
PRs
My personal times are not important. The times of those I’ve coached are what truly matter and I’m happy to report that they are solid.
