SPECIALTIES

I like the challenge of working with any level of runner and distances from 800 meters to Marathon. I also can provide triathlon coaching training/advice across all distances. Along with a training plan I believe a strength training and a rolling/stretching program is essential to reach optimal potential.

PHILOSOPHY

My coaching would focus on creating a training plan that works best for each individual athlete. My goal would be to learn as much about the athlete to tailor a plan that best works for them and their schedule. A plan that helps build consistency while having fun is key!

COACHING EXPERIENCE

I worked as a personal trainer from 2008-2010 with the focus on group endurance strength training and individual running and multi sport plans. In 2010 I was an assistant coach for a triathlon training group. Since then I have helped coach friends for running and triathlon events. I have experience working at physical therapy and medical massage clinics, at which I help coach people daily through the healing and strengthening process required to recover from various injuries.

ABOUT ME

I went to Western Washington University to get a BS in Fitness Science, then continued school to get degrees in Massage Therapy and Physical Therapist Assistant.

I enjoy paddle boarding, hiking, tennis, yoga, hanging with friends, watching a good movie or sporting event (Go Hawks and Mariners!)

In 2018 I qualified to be a USAT pro/elite triathlete and I raced the 2019 season as a pro/elite. This year (2020) I decided to go back to focusing more on run races, I would love to try to bring down my 5k and half marathon PR’s.

BIG INFLUENCES

The last few years I have based my own workouts off of Jack Daniels approach for pacing and intervals. I have taken many gait analysis, technique and strength training courses from Physical Therapist Jay Dicharry. I follow mobility exercises and myofascial treatment advice from Kelly Starrett and Naudi Aguilar.

My teammates on the Bellingham Distance Project have been big motivators and great people to turn to for advice.

I listen to running and triathlon podcasts and enjoy learning from new coaching philosophies.

RACING HISTORY

I have been competing in running events since I was in 5th grade. I ran for Decatur High School, Highline Community College and WWU. Started triathlon racing in 2003.

David’s coaching has been phenomenal! I needed someone to help me to get me to my goal of completing a 70.3 distance triathlon and he did just that! I found out I was pregnant 2 months into training, he was more than understanding with this major life change and was able to adjust my training to my pregnancy. I was able to finish my 70.3 race this month because of him!! Would definitely recommend him to anyone interested in starting up their triathlon journey.

David is excellent. The workouts plans he writes each week are moved up or down exactly as needed. I never feel like I need to tell him I can do more or less. He accurately prescribes lifting, running, and biking based on my current focus and keeps the schedule from getting monotonous.

I’ve been training with David for a few months now. I started training with him after a little over a year into my triathlon journey (I started in grad school). I also started training with him after not being in very good shape after moving across the country and dealing with lingering injuries, suffice to say I was not in the best shape I’d been in. The initial meeting went well and he’s very receptive to what your personal goals and time commitments are, I also personally like that he has an exercise science background which is extremely beneficial in understanding the importance of how training impacts the body. I can tell my fitness is improving and I’ve been really enjoying myself the last couple of months. I’m looking forward to race season (triathlon and running) and seeing how the base work pays off.

I’ve really enjoyed working with David over the last couple months! He has been invaluable in helping me work towards my goal of running the Chuckanut 50K in a safe and effective way. I am so happy with the progress I’ve made so far – I’m running faster, my weekly mileage is building, and I’m no longer intimidated by the length of my long runs (I actually look forward to them)! David is great at meeting you where you’re at and then challenging you to improve, while always checking in to make sure you’re feeling good and avoiding injury. His programming is easy to follow and he’s great about planning each training week around your schedule.
My husband and I have both worked with David and he has quickly gone from a great coach to a great friend. We can’t recommend him enough!

I have been training with David for only a couple of months and I’m already seeing progress towards my goals. I’ve been struggling getting back into running after injury and David is my voice of reason when things start to ache/hurt. He is very knowledgeable, understanding and communicative.
I look forward to long term training with David

David has been incredibly helpful and encouraging as my triathlon coach. He spent time upfront listening to my goals, complicated work schedule and doubts about being a non-swimmer and came up with programming that fit my needs and improved my fitness much more quickly than anticipated. Additionally, I credit his program for keeping me injury free – which I had always struggled with in my previous years of running. He’s a good communicator and makes sure things are working week by week. I just completed my first tri and can’t wait to do another. Thanks David!

I have been training with David for only a couple of months and I’m already seeing progress towards some of my goals. My clothes are fitting better, it’s getting easier to run/jog mileage without stopping, and the fun is starting to come back to running. The training that I receive from David is both thoughtful in regards to where I currently am as a runner and challenging to get me to the next level.

He is also encouraging when I have a bad day or feel sluggish during a workout. I definitely look forward to long term training with David.

Dave is a great athlete with tons of experience. He has maintained a high level of performance for a very long time. He also works as a professional in a field where he can apply this knowledge daily. He is a kind/encouraging person and will help you keep in line with his training plans. He knows how to stay in touch online and if you do your best to follow his plans, you will see your times improve. I saw my times go down by a minute per mile over 2 months. Pretty cool ???? Try coach Dave.
