Running Coach Description
As a former D1 athlete (Murray State University in Murray, KY) with 20 years of personal running experience, I have learned the importance of consistently showing up for myself and honoring what my body can do. I hope to instill this passion in my athletes as well. I am a USATF Level 1 Coach with a specialization in cross country. I am all about meeting athletes where they’re at to help get them where they want to be, which includes a variety of training modalities, but also prioritizing proper recovery, strength training, injury prevention, and learning how to make smart nutritional choices. As someone who’s always learning, I also enjoy showing women how to work with their bodies through all life’s stages, rather than against them.
Specialties
I coach all ability levels from beginner to advanced, primarily in the 1500/1600, 3200, 5K, 10K, and half marathon distances. I have experience with post-injury running, incorporating pre/post-hab work for injury prevention & along with strength training and nutrition. I am also an advocate for helping women how to train WITH their bodies, not against them, in all stages of life.
Philosophy
I am confident that anyone who has a desire to be a runner can be a runner; it all comes down to working with your lifestyle and schedule. There is no “one size fits all” approach to running. I coach PEOPLE who run, and that means meeting athletes where they’re at to help them get where they want to be! I strive to help runners reach their potential in their next race, while also supporting them through strength training, injury prevention, and fueling well; this also includes understanding the female cycle and working with the female body through training, not against it.
Some of my own former coaches’ philosophies I carry into coaching myself include:
- Consistency is key.
- Keep the hard days hard and the easy days easy.
- Build physical and mental resistance and resilience.
- Trust the training.
Coaching Experience
I was a middle school track & XC coach for 6 years. Currently, I am in my 8th year of coaching high school track & field and cross country. I have also worked with former high school runners, now young adults, to help them continue competing in 5Ks and beyond. Individual girls and boys, if not the both teams as a whole, have qualified for state every year.
About Me
I’ve been a runner since 2005 and competed in varsity track & cross country 2005 through 2012. After high school, I was blessed to be able to walk on at a D1 school and compete for the next 4 years in track and cross country, specifically the 800, 1500, 1600, 3K, 5K, and 6K. After college, I dabbled in half marathons and 10Ks, and then settled into just using running as an escape from the day-to-day stressors and staying in shape. Shortly after getting married and moving away from home, the Covid shutdown happened, and running took a back seat. A year later, I broke my leg on a snowy hike. It felt like a part of me was missing while I healed from that and really took some time to learn about my body. While it was a lot to experience, I am thankful for it because it taught me the importance of being resilient and building resistance–physically and mentally–and that I need to work with my body and meet myself where I’m at, not try to force things based on what I was doing back in college. Now, I myself have a coach and have had lots of success with my training and racing. It’s wonderful to have the itch to race again. I hope to instill this drive and excitement in my athletes as well!
Aside from running, I am married to my best friend (sadly, not a runner) and we have 3 wonderfully cuddly kitties, I love reading psych thrillers, and I have way too many indoor house plants (which is tricky, given the cats)! My top 5 bands right now are Coldplay, Biffy Clyro, The Paper Kites, Two Door Cinema Club, and Iron & Wine.
Big Influences
My own former high school and college coaches were very impactful and whose philosophies I adopt into my coaching today, such as: keep the hard days hard and the easy days easy, remember that consistency is the secret sauce, and always remind myself to trust the training when doubts creep in.
I also take a lot of inspiration from Jay Johnson, Joe Vigil, Jack Daniels, Dr. Stacy Sims, Ryan & Sara Hall, and Colleen Quigley.
Race History
One of my most vivid race experiences was pretty recently. I had been doing well in training consistently and was in a good mental head space in the days leading up to the race. However, the morning of, I had many things quickly stacking up against me due to poor planning the night before: I woke up late, had to stop and get gas once I got 10 minutes into my 35 minute drive to the race location, had to use the bathroom twice after I spent 10 minutes in the check in line, cut my entire warm up run in half because time was running out, and ended up only doing a couple of stretches before I had to stop and retie my shoes after the starting gun went off literally while I’m walking up to the line! I had so many reasons to be angry with myself, but I decided to just meet myself where I was at and my mantra became “I can still run fast when things go wrong”. I ended up shaving over a minute off of my estimated finish time. I was so proud of myself in that moment, but also I learned so many lessons. I can laugh about it now, but it ended up being instrumental in changing my mentality when I have so many reason to NOT run, lift, etc. I just need to trust the training and get my rear in gear because it will pay off later!
