ABOUT ME
I’m currently a college sophomore running for Clovis Community College here in Fresno, California. I’m studying to be a teacher and a head Cross Country and Track Coach after I graduate. I love art in all forms: books, movies, music, poetry, theater, etc. I spend much of my free time consuming this art. I also love hanging out with my friends, it’s one of my favorite things to do regardless of what it is we’re doing. My friends and family are an integral part of my life, and fostering those relationships is incredibly important to me.
BIG INFLUENCES
My biggest influence is my current coach, CJ Albertson, who is a world-class marathoner and a genius when it comes to coaching. Much of my coaching philosophy is based on his. Another big influence on my coaching style is former University of Colorado Head Coach Mark Wetmore. I became familiar with his techniques through the book, “Running with the Buffaloes”. Wetmore has won multiple national titles as their head coach. Both of these guys believe in higher mileage and building strong cardiovascular systems and ultra-fit athletes. While not everyone is an Olympic-level marathoner or an elite collegiate runner, my coaching style that I derive from them is adaptable to runners at all levels.
RACING HISTORY
There are a few key races in my career that really lit the spark for my running career. The first significant one was our Section Championship for Cross Country my freshman year of high school. I made Varsity due to a few of our top guys being injured. I ran a 17:48 5k that race, my first race breaking 18:00, and I was so happy and excited. I realized I had a love for this sport and wanted to keep working hard to be the best I could be.
The second race I’d like to share about is our Section Championship my junior year track season. After struggling to break 10:00 in the 2 mile all season, I ran 9:57. I was ecstatic, it was a colossal milestone that I had finally toppled. It was a milestone I had been working for since even before that season, and it was a sign of the great Senior year I was about to have.
The third race I’d like to share is the Section Championship for Cross Country my Senior year. My Senior year was my best and favorite season of high school; in this race, I ran 16:16 for 5k and helped my team achieve their first appearance at the State meet in 5 years. This race was a culmination of the hard work I had put in over the last 4 years; I started off my high school career unconfident in my abilities and not even sure if I wanted to keep doing the sport. It wasn’t easy, but over my 4 years of high school I stayed consistent and didn’t give up even in the face of injury, and it paid off with a great season.
The final race I would like to share is our Regional Championship my freshman year of college. I was a veteran runner at this point, confident in my abilities. I took 13th at that race, earning myself a medal and a spot on the All-Region team. That placing helped my team win the team title; we were the best team in Northern California. After years of not knowing how good I could be, here I was, earning myself a medal in a collegiate championship.
I decided to share these races because they’re why I believe anybody can be fast. My freshman year of high school I started out not even knowing if I wanted to run; by my Senior year I was a key member of the team. I believe my story and progress is a testament to what just staying consistent will lead to.
