Specialties

I specialize in coaching athletes of all abilities in road running. Whether you’re newer to running and looking for more structure or a seasoned athlete wanting to chase a new marathon PR, I want to be in your corner!

I work best with athletes that bring with them a sense of curiosity about the sport. I find that the best motivation is understanding the “why” of each step taken towards a goal. I take a holistic approach to writing a training plan, that takes every part of your life into account and makes running as enjoyable as possible. I also help my athletes with incorporating strength training, mobility, stretching, and nutrition!

Philosophy

My coaching philosophy centers on flexibility, fun, and science-based training. Running should enrich your life, not compete with it. Training for a big goal takes time and dedication, but I believe the best plans are the ones that adapt around real life—work, family, travel, stress, and everything in between. I want my athletes to feel supported, not boxed in. Flexibility doesn’t mean less structure; it means training smarter, not harder, so you can show up consistently as your best self.

Open and honest communication is the foundation of great coaching. I encourage frequent check-ins, questions, and discussions about the details—running form, shoes, nutrition, mobility, recovery, or anything else that impacts your training. I’m a big believer in understanding the why behind every workout, because informed athletes are confident athletes. When you know what a session is meant to accomplish, it’s easier to stay motivated, trust the process, and—most importantly—keep running fun.

Coaching Experience

I’ve had the opportunity to work with adult athletes of many skill levels, coaching them to achieve their goals in distances ranging from the 5k to the marathon. I help athletes take a long view of what their goals are and help them achieve those goals through consistency and open communication.

In addition to coaching adults, I also have experience coaching kids ages 3-12 through the Somerville Road Runners’ Kids Program! Through this program, I help foster a welcoming and fun environment around the sport of running. I wholeheartedly believe that this mindset fully applies to adults, and it helps inform my coaching strategies.

About Me

I’ve been a runner since I was a freshman in high school, when I joined the cross-country team because it was the only sport that didn’t make any cuts. I started out my racing career finishing at the back of the pack on the trails of Van Cortland Park in the Bronx. Now, I’ve run countless road races, many of them being half and full marathons. Through running, I’ve been able to find a community that I love and achieve more than I ever thought I could.

I live in Somerville, Massachusetts, right outside of Boston, and I work as a cancer scientist at a biotechnology company. Outside of running, I love to spend time outside on the beach, read fantasy and sci-fi novels, ride my bike even though I’m no cyclist, and workout in a variety of ways! Right now, some of my favorite books are the Stormlight Archive series by Brandon Sanderson! I also love to travel to new places, cook new dishes, and practice my Spanish every chance I get!

Big Influences

My biggest running influences are Meb Keflezighi, Des Linden, Alexi Pappas. I’ve read each of their memoirs and cannot recommend them enough. Meb talks a lot about each of his career marathons and the lessons he learned from each of them. What stuck with me the most was how he changed his training as he aged. He allowed flexibility into his marathon training, and that allowed him to maintain a high level of running and competing for years. Des Linden is the queen of consistency, and her mantra “keep showing up” informs how I approach my own training. Whether you are feeling your best, your worst, or somewhere in between, just showing up, doing what you can, and doing it consistently will pay off. Finally, Alexi Pappas inspires me to maintain fun and whimsy in the face of doing difficult things. I especially like her take on the Rule of Thirds. When preparing to do anything difficult, you should feel normal a third of the time, great a third of the time, and bad a third of the time. This idea made me understand that a bad workout isn’t a waste of time or a step backwards. If anything, a bad workout is just filling my quota of time spent feeling bad!

Race History

Some of the most important races that I’ve done are the 2022 Providence Marathon, the 2024 Chicago Marathon, and the 2025 Boston Marathon. Each of these races has taught me a lesson that I take with me into my coaching and my own running. These races have taught me the value of community, light-heartedness, and grit.

    Kyle McLane –

I came to Jon with a slightly more unusual schedule that I needed to adhere to. Just 11 weeks out from my marathon, and with a B-race relay on the calendar right in the middle, Jon expertly navigated my racing schedule to not only have me ready and healthy for both races, but to out-perform my wildest expectations on both. I ran a 10+ minute PB in Amsterdam with Jon’s help and had a blast while doing it. Jon also navigated my own weekly schedule, notably a 5-mile run club that I attend every Tuesday, and worked that directly into the training plan. He was able to adjust workouts for me if I felt tired or overworked, give me tips on how to best ease back if I felt like a run was going poorly, and was always there to be a sounding board for any of my questions or concerns regarding my race. He pushed me into a pace that I felt uncomfortable with and walked me through the stats on why he knew that I was capable of it, and was my biggest cheerleader the whole way. Could not recommend Jon enough to anyone that is looking to train for a big race, whether you are local to Boston or not.

    JESSICA –

Jon is the best running coach I could have asked for!!! He pushed me harder than I thought I was capable of while making sure my training was smart, not too much or too overwhelming, personalized, and sustainable. Thanks to his coaching, I PR’d the Chicago Marathon on a 75-degree, humid day, while getting married and traveling a ton in the middle of the work — something I’m incredibly proud of. I was also lucky enough to have Jon there in person for some of my workouts, which made such a difference in keeping me motivated and pushing me to see what I was truly capable of.

He knows how to challenge you in the right ways, build your confidence, stop you from doing too much, and get you to the starting line feeling prepared. Jon is supportive, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in helping you reach your goals. I can’t recommend him enough to anyone looking to get stronger, run faster, and surprise themselves with what they’re capable of! BOOK JON AS A COACH IF I CAN GIVE YOU ANY ADVICE!

    Will Moore –

Jon has been an excellent coach in providing me structure and support that I haven’t gotten out of other training plans. In the past I’ve used apps or online plans to train for half marathons and marathons, and while they were able to give me workouts they felt very unpersonal, inflexible, and isolated. Jon has completely flipped the script in that regard; he’s tailored my plan around my previous running experience and my feedback during my training, he’s adapted my plan when I’ve been busy traveling or when life gets in the way, and he regularly checks in after workouts to see how I’m doing and to offer guidance. I’ve never felt more confident going into race day than I have after Jon’s coaching.

    Harrison Dilthey –

I’ve been training with Jon for a few months now and can’t say enough good things about him. He checks in with me on a regular basis to make sure training is feeling good, is constantly adapting my schedule to travel plans and running events, and he designs my training plan to maximize my progress leading up to races. Whether it’s stubbing my toe on vacation or cutting my foot on the beach, he always makes sure I’m healthy and safe before jumping back in to workouts. I’ve also had the pleasure of seeing him on the sideline cheering me on for a recent race. If you’re looking for a consistent and professional remote coach, I can’t say enough good things about him.

    Lukas Morgan –

Jon has been an amazing coach for my first two months! He is incredibly responsive to my frequent questions and requests for advice. His training plans are well curated, researched, and tailored to my goals. As a long ago, long time runner getting back into shape, he has helped and motivated me to stay consistent and proud of my progress.

On a personal level, he is kind and respectful and Jon’s passion for running shines through in his coaching. I wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone of any running ability or level – he is totally something so out of the ordinary!!

    Geoffrey Currier –

Jon has been an excellent coach! My goal was to run a 10K having had minimal distance running experience. Jon gave me a structured plan that provided a strong base to build on week to week. When I encountered issues like injury or a busy schedule outside of training, Jon adapted my plan to meet me where I was at.
Jon also helped me push beyond my abilities with difficult yet attainable workouts. As mileage increased, so did my confidence. Jon provided multiple insights and helped develop my language and understanding of running.
Jon checked in with me for updates about once a week, more if needed (like in cases of injuries).
Jon is also sure to create a plan that matches your lifestyle. I wanted to incorporate weight training along with my running and on weeks where injuries were prevalent, Jon included cycling as a cardio alternative. Such choices provided me flexibility and kept me engaged with the variety.
I look forward to continuing my work with Jon and highly recommend him to anyone at any level!!

    Jenn Seabolt –

Jon really works with you to build a plan that is good for YOU. I’m running my first marathon in October, and he has set up a really achievable build for me to get there (going from a 5k at the end of this month and growing to longer distance races). He also works my favorite forms of cross training into my plan, and has found a way to work running into my schedule (rather than it feeling forced).

Notably, I also have fibromyalgia and an autoimmune disease, and Jon has done a lot of research to learn how that impacts my body and therefore training. He’s understanding of working around this, but also incredibly motivating and helpful, and has helped me, on the spot, identify how to switch things up if I need to. I cannot recommend Jon enough!
