SPECIALTIES
Efficient movement on the road is a key component of how I coach. My professional background as a PT helps give me a holistic view to support you during your training.
While my passion is the marathon, I can coach individuals aspiring to run their first 5K/10K distances. Helping you go from couch to 5K is one of the tools in my shed. Through training periodization, walk/run increments, and open discussion on everything to expect up to and beyond the finish line, I will help you run a smart, healthy, and fun race. I can provide analysis of your running form, as well as insight and planning for mobility, strength training and proper footwear.
When preparing runners who want to tackle the marathon distance, I’m your guy for whatever your goal may be. Beyond running PRs (which are thrilling!), I can help you achieve other types of goals. I can be a coach for those looking to be “lifers”. If you’re looking for longevity in the sport, with running for “love of the game”, together we will build cycles of training that will flow with life, to keep you moving healthy and free. If going after that BQ or shiny PR is your thing, we’ll dial up just the right type of intensity and put you in the best position to meet those standards.
PHILOSOPHY
My mental and strategic approach to coaching is based on the Latin proverb “Festina Lente”, which translates to “make haste, slowly.” This equates to a balanced approach to training. I preach that the balancing of urgency with patience is key to achievement. Consistency in the program will be superior to pursuing perfection on every workout. We will have focused sessions to achieve your set goals, to be sure, but growth in long distance running will come through building blocks.
It must also be ENJOYABLE. Even the pros have fun training! So should the rest of us! I also encourage athletes to pick and choose the events they WANT to do and will give my feedback on how we can make that happen while maintaining happiness and health of both body and mind.
Communication between athlete and coach is key to this and makes for a more enjoyable experience for all. I am available via What’s App and will get back to my athletes within 24 hours for check-ins, questions, and anything that may pop up during training.
COACHING EXPERIENCE
I have coached for about 3 years, starting with creating plans for friends and family, before going professional with individual coaching in 2022. In coaching athletes preparing for the marathon, I have led runners to 9 marathon finishes, including 3 PRs since starting 2 years ago.
Overall, I have coached 12 athletes, achieving 7 personal bests, including first time finishers at every distance from the 50K to the 5K distances.
I also coached at the school level starting in 2021, as assistant Cross Country coach at Eastern Christian Middle School in Wyckoff, NJ. I was promoted to head coach of the T&F team at EC in 2022 and later as the XC head coach at EC for the ’22/’23 seasons.
ABOUT ME
I live in Raleigh, NC with my wife, Miriam, and our dog, Riley. Long walks and exploring new hiking trails with Riley are our go to activities. We enjoy traveling the world, visiting over 20 countries since we were married in 2014. We have lived in 3 different states (NY, NJ, NC) and love to keep in touch with and visit old friends.
In my free time, I enjoy playing chess, board games, or lounging to a movie/show with my family.
Fun fact: I was born in Egypt and my mom and grandma brought me to the U.S. when I was just a few months old. I became a U.S. citizen at 7 years old and remember my “oath of allegiance” ceremony.
BIG INFLUENCES
Eliud Kipchoge for his approach to life and preparation for the marathon. His meticulousness, calm under pressure, and monk-like lifestyle have impacted my approach to running. David Goggins and his mental fortitude have impacted me personally. I love to read Ryan Holiday’s work on the Stoics and find his insight to life very impactful in my coaching strategy. Coaches Jack Daniels, Keith Hanson, Kevin Hanson have impacted my coaching style. I also have found and utilized many of the concepts put out by renowned physical therapist, Jay Dicharry.
RACING HISTORY
My first race was an 8K in college as a D-III walk on. I finished in last place, in 48 minutes. The next closest runner to me had finished about 10 minutes before I got to the finish. It is still one of my proudest races because I fought the strong urge to give up. In the cross-country championship, I shaved off 12 minutes from my 8K and finished middle of the pack. I am proud to say that after finishing my first marathon in 4:04 at NYC 2013, I qualified for Boston and ran my PR there in 2023, finishing in 2:52. Getting to Boston was a long journey which included trying to break 3 hours in the marathon over SEVEN ATTEMPTS before finally cracking the code at the 2022 Philly Marathon in 2:59:13. That ranks as the greatest feeling I’ve had after a marathon, including after running my personal best.
One of the coolest race experiences I’ve had in the half marathon was being tucked in with a pace group attempting to break 1:20 at the Brooklyn half. Thanks to that group and some grit I’ve picked up along the way, I finished a nail biter in 79:47. I didn’t think I’d make it on time until the final few steps. I know what it’s like to finish last and I know what it’s like to be competing at a race like Boston. Along the way, I’ve learned that striving for achievements is great, but all the people I’ve connected with along the way make running memorable.
