Specialties

Whether you are brand new to the sport of ultra running, be it road or trail, or this is not your first rodeo and you are looking to improve, I center training plans around YOU and YOUR life in a sustainable manner, which empowers you to run longer for longer!

Sometimes runners get a bit intimidated by the weekly mileage or distance they think that they need to run in order to successfully complete or improve in an ultra-distance running event. I’m here to debunk the myth that you need to run incredibly high-mileage to do well. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about challenging my runners and helping them to progress, and trust me, I will hold you accountable and you WILL work HARD :), but I also want this sport to be accessible for anyone that wants to give it a whirl! Whether you are a stay-at-home parent, have a full-time job, travel a lot, or any other consideration, I’ll be thoughtful in shaping your training to fit best for your lifestyle.

Whether you have ample or limited time, are injury prone, or a mileage/time on feet maestro, my plans focus on helping you to become more efficient, focusing on building your base fitness, quality workouts, and fine tuning complementary variables that make a positive difference in your training.

Before I dive into what specialized coaching with me looks like, I want to establish a couple of very important things:

  1. I believe that trail and ultra running are forms of play and I want you to have fun/find joy in what you do! Of course it’s not all sunshine and butterflies all the time, but I want to help you maintain or ignite a passion for the process of training and running ultra distance events.
  2. My goal is to teach you the skills necessary to be a good problem solver on your own, which means getting to know yourself really well and being able to identify the changes needed to move through challenges in a calm and confident manner (of course I’m always here as a voice of reason/sounding board to support and encourage you!).

Here’s a snapshot of what the coaching process with me looks like and what your monthly coaching package includes:

  1. A one-hour in-depth onboarding consultation
  2. A long range plan that overviews your year, goals, and the blocks of workout types that we’ll be focusing on each month
  3. Weekly customized training plans assigned through Final Surge (scheduled 1-3 weeks in advance depending, but most commonly one week out to account for real time adjustments)
  4. Weekly coach feedback, taking into consideration your workout metrics and the subjective feedback that you provide
  5. Unlimited access to me via email and text
  6. One 30-minute check in monthly via phone or video conference
  7. Race/event planning logistical support
  8. Advice surrounding nutrition, fueling, strength, mobility, cross-training, mental techniques, gear, environmental considerations, and more!
  9. Conversations based on resources, fun tidbits, and up-to-date knowledge that I share with you

For your success, two-way communication and honesty will be KEY! Just as you expect that I communicate with you, I need you to be accountable for providing me with honest subjective feedback about your workouts and how things are going.

If you’re ready to tackle this challenging, rewarding, and fun sport of ultrarunning, I’d be honored to have you on board!

Philosophy

Each runner is valued as a unique individual and training plans are built upon this concept. I believe ultra running must be approached in a sustainable way so that runners can be healthy, strong, and run for a long time to come! My coaching is centered around UESCA evidence based research.

Every runner responds to training differently and specific considerations need to be accounted for. My training plans are comprehensive and adapt along with athletes’ real-time needs. Specific training considerations include things like biomechanics, nutrition, mental training, strength, mobility, cross training, injury prevention, and recovery. Additional considerations include work and family schedules/factors and environmental factors such as weather, elevation, and terrain.

I structure workouts primarily based on time versus mileage due to the variance in terrain and technicality in trail running, however, there are exceptions to this depending on what you are training for (e.g. a road ultra in which your training is primarily done on flatter surfaces), which would warrant a mileage based plan versus training for trail specific races.

Each training plan incorporates a long-range overview (wide lens planning) as well as specific block focused (narrow lens/real-time planning); prioritizing least specific training adaptations further out from your event/goals and most specific closest to your event/goals so that you are race, adventure, or goal-oriented ready!

About Me

I enjoy being active, learning, and applying new ideas. You’ll often find me in nature, from the trails to the garden. I am fascinated by nutrition and living a well-balanced lifestyle. My husband is also a trail runner, is UESCA certified for distances 5k to marathon, and is a physical therapist assistant. I’m lucky because I get to bounce ideas off of him when it comes to all things running. Running out in nature on the trails brings me great happiness, peace, and motivation. As a former educator and mother, I naturally appreciate the learning process. I’m grateful to learn alongside my athletes as they teach me so much in addition to what I have to offer them.

Big Influences

A core influence in my coaching stems back to my first years of running cross-country and track in high-school, where I felt understood, accepted, and challenged. A sense of community and having support is empowering. Positive coach and athlete relationships go a long way when learning or refining skills. I rely on subjective feedback from my athletes as well as consistent two-way communication. Jason Koop’s book: Training Essentials for Ultrarunning and UESCA evidence based principles (course also taught by Jason Koop) help to guide my coaching.

Some components based from these resources that I implement are the Rate of Perceived Exertion Scale and subjective feedback (along with other metric data like heart rate, sleep, and heart rate variability). I assign periodized training blocks with specificity. Workouts are assigned based on the five types of running: recovery, endurance, steady state, tempo, and running intervals.

Race History

I’ve completed a variety of races and distances from 2020 to now. I prefer more mountainous terrain and downhill is my jam! I’m still uncertain what my favorite distance is to date, but I’m leaning towards the 50 mile distance as my sweet-spot! I think that the 100 mile distance is where I am learning the most. I’ve finished two hundred milers: Run Rabbit Run and Loco 100. I ran over 90 miles of High Lonesome 100 and would like to go back to Bighorn 100 again in the future to finish. I am currently training for the Mogollon Monster 100 and looking forward to the technical terrain and the practice in managing the weather and temperature variables out in Arizona. I’ve completed Quad Rock 50 three times (aiming of a fourth this year), as well as Red-Feather 50 miler one time. I’ve complete the stunningly beautiful Never Summer 100k once and plan to run the 60k this year. I’ve completed a variety of shorter distances as well. Ranked among the top of my favorites are the Devil on the Divide 50k and 22k.

Coach Kimberly is top notch! She has been very engaged in setting goals with me and helped map the process to achieve those goals. Early in the year I did Run the Ranch 12 hour race. She guided me through training for Quad Rock 50. She is an accomplished runner herself and passionate about guiding others in the running community. I appreciate her consistency in holding me accountable, also her understanding and guidance when life gets to be a bit much for training. She is knowledgeable, professional, and all around fun coach to work with.
