Specialties

  • Motivated distance runners looking to improve their times through individualized, structured training or move up to a longer distance.
  • Athletes looking for periodized training to peak at key events and multi-season/year planning to help them achieve their long term goals.
  • Runners focused on road racing, track, and cross country (or any combination of the three!)

Philosophy

Athletes run their best when they are healthy and happy. Distance running is a sport that rewards long-term consistency, so it is important that your training is sustainable, fits within your life and schedule, and is fun! While our sport is relatively simple, a great training program needs to take into account a runner’s background, lifestyle, and goals. Runners get fitter not from a single workout, but from the accumulation of many consistent workouts and easy volume at the appropriate effort. Every runner deserves the opportunity to stay in the sport over the long term and progress toward their full potential, while enjoying the process.

I am a big believer in getting the basics right before progressing toward more advanced training or chasing marginal gains. Most runners can improve significantly by consistently following a structured training plan and doing a great job on recovery!

Coaching Experience

I have been coaching online since 2018, guiding athletes to Boston qualifiers, Canadian age group records, and many personal bests!

From 2013 to 2021 I coached at the club level in Ontario, working with late-elementary, high school, collegiate, and post-collegiate distance runners and contributing to my club’s outstanding reputation for long-term athlete development.

Since moving to Vancouver in 2021, I have been the lead coach of the Vancouver Thunderbirds Post-Secondary Endurance training group. The group has provided distance runners with a great opportunity to continue training and racing competitively during their collegiate and post-collegiate years. Athletes from the training group have qualified for provincial and national teams while others have improved and been added to university varsity teams as upper year student-athletes.

About Me

I am an elite runner, coach, and lifelong student of the sport! The hard work and consistency I have put in over many years gave me the opportunity to represent Canada on several national teams, including the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon where I placed 13th in the marathon. When I’m not running I enjoy hiking Vancouver’s North Shore mountains with my golden retriever, Gordie.

Big Influences

My biggest influence has been my coach, Steve Weiler, having worked together since 2010 and coached as a team since 2013. My coaching also incorporates principles from Jack Daniels, Arthur Lydiard, and Marius Bakken among others.

Race History

I have loved distance running ever since I was old enough to start competing in cross country and track. I trained with a track club in high school and ran for Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario during my collegiate years. As a post-collegiate athlete I have medalled at Canadian Championships over a variety of surfaces and distances, and I have represented Canada on multiple national teams, including at the World Athletics Championships in the marathon and the World Cross Country Championships. Throughout my running career I have loved training, pushing myself, and seeing what I am capable of. What I love about distance running is that it rewards hard work but also patience, consistency, and perseverance. I competed in my first global championship at age 35 and I think I am a great example of long-term progression thanks to my work ethic, patience, and being too stubborn to quit!

    Bruce Jones –

I have been working with Leslie for 7 years. She is an amazing coach. Her workouts are interesting, challenging, and tailored to my goals and needs. She is thoughtful and flexible and able to adapt my training schedule to changes in my health as well as my personal circumstances. She is also available to discuss my training as needed and offers very helpful perspectives based on her experience as a runner and coach. I’m super happy that I have Leslie as a coach, and I would recommend her to any runner. She is great!
