Running Coach Description

Hey, I’m James — a 3x NCAA D3 All-American in cross country and track, 3x USA South Conference Champion, 2026 USA South Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, and a USATF & NASM certified coach based in Lakewood, CO. My first client came to me with one goal: finish a 5K in under 30 minutes. Three and a half years later, they’ve crossed the finish line of 3 marathons and 2 half marathons. That kind of progress is exactly why I coach. I didn’t just study running — I lived it. Four years as a student-athlete at Berea College, balancing a full course load, a campus job, and competing at a national level taught me how to train hard without burning out, manage life when things get busy, and keep showing up even when it’s tough. I coach runners of all levels — whether you’re working toward your first 5K, chasing a PR, or building toward something bigger. My approach is straightforward: we figure out where you are, where you want to go, and build a plan that actually fits your life. If you want a coach who gives real feedback, keeps it simple, and genuinely cares about your progress — let’s work together.

Specialties

Looking to work with motivated individuals, whether you’ve been running for 10 days or 10 years, I want to help you achieve your goals. I competed at the D3 level in college, and have experience training for, and working with people in events from the 800m all the way up to the marathon.

Philosophy

My Philosophy on training is consistent work. You may hear the term keep the ball rolling, and this is exactly the idea. I want training to be strenuous enough to make you push, but should not leave you feeling absolutely smashed. This comes from years of first hand experience that ending a workout one rep short is normally better than Turing yourself inside out just to make pace. My overall goal for my athletes is to make it to the starting line healthy, and with the ability to achieve their goals.

Coaching Experience

I’ve been coaching on Team RunRun for 3.5 years. In that time, I’ve worked closely with one long-term athlete who came to me with a single goal: finish a 5K in under 30 minutes. We hit that goal in 3 months. Over the next three years, we kept building. That same athlete has now completed 3 full marathons and 3 half marathons under my coaching. I believe in long-term development over quick fixes. I’ll write you a plan that challenges you, respects your life, and gets you to the starting line healthy and ready to race.

About Me

I’m Logan McKenzie — a distance runner, coach, and precision machinist based in Lakewood, Colorado.

Running has been the constant thread through everything I do. I competed at the NCAA Division III level for four years, earned All-American honors three times, and won three conference championships. Those years taught me what disciplined, consistent training actually looks like — not the highlight reel version, but the early mornings, the hard intervals, and the slow recovery runs that nobody notices but that build everything.

After college I found my way to the trails and mountains of Colorado and fell in love with what this terrain demands of you. Sky races at 11,000 feet. Technical singletrack. Long days in the mountains. It lit something up that road racing never quite did.

I’ve been coaching on Team RunRun for over three years, watching athletes go from their first 5K to multiple marathon finishes. I coach the way I train — evidence-based, athlete-centered, and built around your real life. The best training plan is the one you can actually execute consistently, week after week.

If you want a coach who has lived the process from collegiate track to Colorado mountain racing, understands the science, and genuinely invests in getting you to your goals — let’s build something together.

Big Influences

The Jack Daniel’s formula plays a big role in my coaching philosophy, while also drawing from Tom “Tinman” Schwartz, Lydiard, and my college coach Shawn Jakubowski.

Logan and I have been a good fit. He always gets back to me right away when I have any questions. He always has my workout loaded and ready for me to go. I had an injury and he worked with me to get going again. I’ve already accomplished my first short term goal and keep on improving. I’m feeling great about how things are going and Logan has been a lot of help.
