Philosophy

Good coaching should make you more confident, not more dependent. I want every athlete to understand why we are doing a workout, how it fits into the bigger picture, and what to change when work, family, sleep, stress, or weather gets in the way.

I use the science, but I do not coach a spreadsheet. I look at the whole runner: training history, schedule, recovery, fueling, stress, injury patterns, goals, and what keeps running enjoyable. Consistency wins. Hard days need a purpose, easy days need to stay easy, and fueling is part of training—not something we try to figure out the night before a race.

Coaching Experience

I currently direct Bears Track Club and coach cross country and distance at Palmer Ridge High School. Across the club and school programs, I work with roughly 75 middle- and high-school athletes and oversee seasonal planning, individual training groups, workouts, strength, racing, travel, and family communication.

Athletes I have coached have qualified for Colorado state championship meets and national meets from middle school through high school. Seven Bears athletes qualified for Nike Indoor Nationals in 2026.

Before coaching full time, I taught middle-school science. That experience still shapes how I coach: I explain the reason behind the work, adjust the explanation to the athlete, and make complicated ideas usable. I am now opening a limited number of remote spots for adult runners who want the same individualized approach.

About Me

Running has taken me from a 4:27 high-school 1600 to NCAA Division II cross country, a 14:47 5K, and long days in the mountains. I was part of two UCCS NCAA Division II national teams and finished 29th at the 2020 RMAC Cross Country Championship.

I care about performance, but I do not take myself too seriously. My next race is the Taco Bell 50K, which probably says enough. When I am not writing training or nutrition resources, I am usually on a trail, coaching, or jumping into a run with the athletes in my program. I taught middle-school science, so I like explaining the why without turning every conversation into a lecture.

Big Influences

Jack Daniels and VDOT gave me a clear language for prescribing and adjusting intensity. Joe Vigil influenced how I think about long-term development and team culture. Renato Canova shaped the way I think about event-specific progression, while Marius Bakken and Norwegian threshold principles reinforced the value of controlled work an athlete can repeat instead of workouts that only look impressive on paper.

I borrow ideas from all of them, but no athlete gets a copy-and-paste system. The training still has to fit the person in front of me.

Race History

I grew up in track and cross country before running collegiately at UCCS. My background includes middle-distance track, NCAA Division II cross country, road racing, mountain running, and ultra-distance trail events. I have run 14:47 for 5K, 25:48.9 for an 8K cross-country race, 32:42 for 10K, 1:16:36 for the half marathon, the Pikes Peak Marathon, and a backyard 50K that went up and down Pikes Peak. My next race is the Taco Bell 50K.

That range matters in my coaching. I understand the speed and precision needed for a fast 5K, but I also understand the patience, fueling, logistics, and problem-solving required when a race lasts most of the day.
