SPECIALTIES

Based on my experience in ultra trail and road running, I enjoy working with any runner, either new to running or looking to step up to a more competitive level, or young or master, toward their goal.

PHILOSOPHY

Running is instinctive and fun. Everybody can enjoy it. By taking steps further to improve your ability, you can run better and enjoy more from it.

Every runner is different. And even a same runner requires taking a different approach depending on their stage and target. I will try to find out the approach which fits best to the person at that time.

The aspects I will take care of include:

  • Periodize and organize training to gradually evolve ability toward the goal.
  • Balance between intensity and volume to overcome weakness and improve strength.
  • Rest and recover to prevent injury and keep running consistently.
  • Have good nutrition for the best performance.
  • Figuring out strategy and tips for specific race/event.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

Other than giving advice to my family and friends, I have been the best coach of myself since I was a newbie to running.

ABOUT ME

I moved from Japan to the US and came to Seattle in 2007 where there is a great trail running community and I started trail running as a course of nature.

I like to dive into different culture, travel and run around. Other than English and Japanese, I speak French and Spanish a little.

I am sponsored by Seven Hills Running Shop.

I’m writing blogs in “Mountain Martial Arts”, a very popular trail running and lifestyle brand in Japan, to introduce PNW trail running to Japanese.

BIG INFLUENCES

As an endurance athlete, I am the most influenced by Joe Friel’s periodization. That’s the base when I plan my training. The others who has influenced me are: Tim Noakes (“Lore of Running” etc.), Matt Fitzgerald (“80:20”), Jason Koop (“Training Essentials For Ultrarunning”) and Steve Magness (“The Science if Running”).

RACING HISTORY

I started my running career in my late 30s and have run marathons and about 50 ultra trail races so far. Now in my late 40s, I keep myself competitive with young guns in many big fields in Washington, over the state, and around the world.

Ultra Trail:

  • 1st place Zion 100 (2016)
  • 2nd place Bear 100 (2018)
  • 3rd place HURT 100, 2 year in a row (2017 and 2018)
  • 1st place Orcas 50k, 3 year in a row (2016, 2017 and 2018)
  • 1st place Sun Mountain 50 miler (2016)
  • 3 time UTMB finisher (2014, 2015 and 2016)

PRs

Trail:

  • 50k: 3:58:55 (2016 Chuckanut 50k)
  • 50 miler: 6:30:09 (2015 Sun Mountain 50 miler)
  • 100 miler: 17:36:50 (2016 Zion 100)

When I was practicing on my own, I couldn’t manage my fatigue easily. By having Mr. Fujioka coach me, I think I have been able to train well without leaving fatigue. It’s going very well.

Due to my injury situation in the last couple of months, I cannot exactly evaluate the effectiveness of his training program, but I believe he has excellent coaching capability to improve runners through his training program.

I am an amateur runner who have finished 100-miler twice. This is my first time hiring a coach and I absolutely loved it. Mr. Fujioka is very thorough and pays attention to the facets of the training. I have been under his supervision for 2 mo+ and I can feel that I am improving.
Our primary language of communication is Japanese, which should appeal to Japanese customers. I am very certain that he delivers excellent coaching in English as well.

    very nice

I was worried about online coaching, but it’s great after I actually get started.

Mr. Fujioka explains it to my knowledge level, so it is easy to understand.

It started from a bad time, but thanks to his guidance I was able to get out of the badtime.

It’s great to see the effects in a short period of time, even with limited interaction on a spreadsheet.
