Specialties

I specialize in creating individualized training plans shaped around real life. Most of my athletes are juggling work, kids, travel, and responsibilities outside of running. My coaching emphasizes fitting training into a busy schedule without burnout. Every plan supports progress, durability, and balance.

My coaching approach combines evidence-based methods:

  • Downhill Running & Strength Training
    • I specialize in downhill running and preparing athletes for downhill-heavy road races. Downhill racing requires strong legs and the ability to tolerate high eccentric load. My programming includes targeted lower-body strength, progressive loading, and downhill-specific sessions to help athletes maintain form and stay strong late in the race.
  • Run–Walk Method (Beginners Only)
    • Used exclusively for beginners who are new to running or returning after extended time off. It builds aerobic fitness safely, reduces injury risk, and develops confidence. Athletes transition away from run–walk as their fitness improves.
  • Polarized Training (80/20)
    • A structured approach that balances mostly easy aerobic running with purposeful high-intensity work to improve performance while keeping athletes consistent and healthy.

I help runners improve within the context of their real lives—not by asking them to train like full-time athletes.

Philosophy

My coaching philosophy is built on meeting athletes where they are, applying the right training method for their experience level, and building strength and consistency over time. Running should challenge you without breaking you. I emphasize gradual progress, proper mechanics, and strength and mobility work to support long-term development and durability.

Coaching Experience

I coach beginner and intermediate runners using run–walk and polarized (80/20) training, with an emphasis on consistency and injury prevention. I also work with international athletes and adjust training to fit their schedules, travel demands, and race logistics.

About Me

I didn’t grow up loving running—in fact, I avoided it. I was a thrower in high school for a year because running didn’t come naturally to me.

After my second child, I went through a serious health scare that forced me to slow down and reevaluate my priorities. When I recovered, running became a way to rebuild my strength and confidence, and eventually it became something I genuinely love.

I enjoy training, improving, and pushing myself, even as a middle-of-the-pack athlete. That mindset shows up in how I coach: steady progress, real expectations, and consistency above everything.

I’ve also raced internationally and work with athletes outside of the US, which helps me design flexible, realistic plans.

Outside of running, I enjoy hiking, rock climbing, backcountry skiing, ice skating, and spending time with my family. In additional to English, I speak Thai and Norwegian.

Race History

I began racing after my second child and have competed across multiple road distances, with half marathons being my favorite. I have extensive experience racing on downhill courses and understand the strength and durability demands they require.

I’m a middle-of-the-pack runner who trains consistently and keeps improving. I bring that same realistic, progress-focused mindset to my coaching.

Melissa is incredibly knowledgeable and created monthly plans that helped me successfully reach my goals. Beyond her expertise, she was so supportive in keeping me dedicated and accountable every step of the way. She’s also wonderfully friendly, which made me feel completely comfortable asking even my most awkward questions. I couldn’t recommend her more!

    Serena Flanders

I have been working with Melissa for a little over a year now. I was a beginner runner and I have noticed a significant improvement in my pacing, endurance, strength, overall mental health, and I even enjoy running now! This past spring I also ran my first 5k with Melissa’s help. As a running coach, Melissa is organized, consistent, encouraging, and friendly. She challenges her students to become their best selves while also meeting them where they are and she works with you to plan reasonable and personalized goals.

Melissa is very knowledgeable, very kind, and she is very flexible with her training plans. She makes training scheduling, the actual plans, and the process of prepping for a race an absolute breeze. Whether you’re looking to get better at running, or prepare for a race and not worry about any of the difficult increases in volume you can count on her to take care of you and be available at any time.
