Running Coach Description
Washington, DC running coach Michael DeAngelo Helps committed 800m-marathon runners reach their goals, including qualifying, setting PR’s, winning age groups or finishing new races. Whether you are looking to set personal records, move up in your age-group rankings, or finish a new race, he can help you get there.
Specialties
While I have experience coaching runners at different abilities and distances, I specialize with runners who want to improve in the 800m-10k range, as well as the half marathon and marathon. Whether you are looking to set personal records, qualify for a race, move up in your age-group rankings, or finish a new race, I can help you get there. I accommodate individual circumstances: professionals and/or family people with busy schedules, those with extensive injury histories, etc. Given my high school and college coaching experience, I will gladly coach high school and college-aged athletes.
Much of my own running and coach experience occurred during cross country season, so I’m acclimated with trail running. Likewise, I’m knowledgeable with race strategy and tactics on all surfaces from my own experience competing and coaching. I’m very experienced with injury prevention and post-injury running, something acquired during my own injuries. I’m comfortable with implementing cross-training, such as swimming and biking, as I’m a triathlete and swimming coach. As a result, I can coach those interested in triathlons. Let’s get you to that next level!
Philosophy
Individualization is the most important part of coaching. A “one size fits all” approach does not serve the individual well enough. I consider your history regarding training, competition, and injury to create a plan that develops your aerobic capacity and strength while keeping you healthy. Consistency is key! You can expect different phases to your training: an endurance-building phase, threshold phase, and speed phase. I like to mix in workouts with different paces and terrains to keep things fresh. The goal is to continually progress towards your goal, whether that goal is a PR or trying new distances.
Coaching Experience
I’ve been coaching for almost 10 years. I started by coaching older family members and friends with a variety of goals, as well as high schoolers in their cross country and track seasons. While I still do this, I’ve also designed training plans for college runners for 6 years. I was an assistant cross country coach at the NCAA Division II level from 2021-2022, as well as a high school head swimming coach. My experience coaching athletes of different ages and abilities has prepared me to coach anyone who is committed to obtaining their goals.
About Me
I’m very active outdoors, whether it be hiking, surfing, or rock climbing. I spent 6 summers as an ocean lifeguard on Cape Cod. Along with being physically active, I spend my free time reading about history, playing the drums, and watching sports and documentaries. I love going to a variety of restaurants on the weekend, whether they be Italian, Mexican, barbeque, or jazz lounges. I enjoy traveling in the U.S. and abroad. I recently lived in Senegal for about a year.
Big Influences
The two coaching philosophies that have influenced me the most were formed by Arthur Lydiard and Jack Daniels. Lydiard popularized the now-mainstream belief that aerobic development should be the core of any training plan for middle distance and greater. This entails a lot of easy, longer running. Daniels emphasizes the importance of training at a variety of effort levels to improve fitness, while focusing on aerobic development to keep athletes healthy and strong. I combine these philosophies with my belief in individualization to craft a plan and approach tailored to the individual I’m working with.
Race History
One racing experience that sticks out to me is from the Springfield, MA city championship XC meet in 10th grade. My training had been interrupted by injury, so I let the top runners start off fast and ran my own race, staying conservative for the first half and then finishing strong. Although I had never been in so much pain from a race, I dug deep and ran down 5 athletes in the last mile to finish in 3rd. This experience taught me how far I could push myself, something I encourage my athletes to discover. Another memorable experience was the XC regional championship my senior year of high school. Although I was definitely fit enough to place in the top 10, I let myself get dragged out too fast in the first mile. My muscles tied up in the last mile of the race and I ended up finishing around 50th place. This race showed me the importance of controlling my race to run the best I can, something I constantly discuss with my athletes.

Arianna Shimits –
Mike was a wonderful support system as I worked towards my first half marathon! Training plans were always posted early and he was very flexible with my crazy schedule. I would recommend Mike to anyone interested in learning the basics or trying to get a PR! He was also very helpful when I tweaked my knee and needed to take some time off! THANK YOU MIKE!

I have been working with Mike for the past six months to prepare for both half marathon and 1.5 mile distance runs. From the start of training, he built a detailed plan for me, taking into account my diverse running goals and time constraints. He is always responsive and willing to adjust the workouts and schedule based on my needs and training progression. The workouts are well-explained and easy to follow. Before each race day, he provided encouragement and valuable advice on how to approach each of the runs. All of this has translated into a significant improvement in both my half marathon and 1.5 mile times. I’m excited to continue working with Mike to prepare for my first marathon. He is an excellent running coach, and I highly recommend working with him!

On a whim, I decided to sign up for a Spartan race. With no prior experience with strength training or running, I was referred to Michael for training. Mike did a wonderful job setting a training schedule to introduce me to a new type of exercise. He offered nutrition advice and ensured that I was progressing well. Any questions or concerns I had were directly addressed. Mike is extremely professional, well-experienced, and knowledgeable about running. I always felt like I was being pushed, but not in a way that would result in injury. By the end of the schedule, I felt ready and confident for the race. In just ten weeks, Mike got me to the level I wanted to get to and needed to get to. My completion of the race is thanks to Mike. I am continuing my training with Mike so that I can continue to have training plans that are geared toward my goals and abilities. No matter what skill level or experience, I believe that you could not go wrong with choosing Mike. He is a fantastic coach.

Coach Mike was one of the best coaches I’ve ever had. I had 10 weeks to train for a 10k and I wouldn’t have been able to finish it without his program. His program included running and strength training. He communicated with me at the end of every week asking for feedback on the difficulty of the program and would adjust accordingly. I would recommend coach Mike for all levels of people because of his vast experience and communication with clients.

Coach DeAngelo reintroduced me to the sport of running. I signed up for him on recommendation from a common acquaintance and in the last 8 weeks he has created a training plan that has kept me injury free, allowed me to progress significantly towards my goals, and created a deep appreciation of the sport that I never possessed before. As the training has progressed Coach DeAngelo has adjusted my workouts to the goals that we set together. This is something that I highly value in a trainer. I was impressed by his ability to listen to me and then craft an experience that was catered to exactly what I was looking for. I cannot recommend Coach DeAngelo enough to runners of all skill levels.
