SPECIALTIES

Specializing in everything from the 800m to the marathon. Personalized training, with expertise in customizing training to fit the individual and understanding how each person responds differently to different types of training/workouts.

PHILOSOPHY

My philosophy is based on individualizing and truly customizing training. No cookie-cutter training. It’s a partnership to help you towards your goals, so communication & feedback are key components to help you achieve & surpass your goals. I believe in having balance, in being intentional in everything we do from workouts & long runs to rest days & cross training.

My passion is helping make sure my athletes enjoy the journey and see they are capable of more than they thought. From coaching collegiate All-Americans, post-collegiate elites, as well as youth/high school runners and beginning 5kers, I love sharing my knowledge and passion while working to help you become the best you can be.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

I have coached for over 15 years at all levels – youth, high school, college, and adults. Collegiately, I’ve coached at the NAIA, NCAA D3, and NCAA D1 levels. My college athletes re-set the record books from the 800m up to the marathon, including having athletes earn 11 All-American honors, two USTFCCCA Regional Athlete of the Year honors, and multiple school Hall of Famers.

I’ve also coached beginner 5k runners starting at a walk/run program, post-collegians who took time off for several years after college, to Master’s runners aiming to stay healthy and accountable in their training and working to be competitive in their age groups.

ABOUT ME

I’ve been a runner nearly all my life. After having basketball be my bigger passion early in life, I switched to fully committing the running journey my junior year of high school after having a knee surgery. I went on to set high school school records in the cross country 5k (15:39), 1600m (4:17), and 4×800 (7:50). Collegiately, I was part of the 2006 NCAA D3 National Championship team at Calvin College (we placed 2nd in 2005 and 4th in 2007 as well). I earned All-American honors my senior year in cross country as well.

Post-collegiately, I competed competitively for a few years. I was invited to compete in the first-ever Ryan Shay Mile among an elite field of post-collegiate milers. I won and set course records at three half marathons (all have been broken since). I’ve completed four marathons so far, including the Chicago Marathon and the New York City Marathon.

I really enjoy the running community. It’s a community of people, support, and joy unlike any other. I love what running teaches us about ourselves, others, and life. I know I’m a better person because of running and when I run and I want to share that with others. I’m involved in Let Me Run – a wellness program for boys that uses running to inspire boys to be courageous enough to be themselves, to build healthy relationships, and to live an active lifestyle.

BIG INFLUENCES

I’ve had a lot of great influences in my coaching/training style. My dad is a huge influence, being a life-long runner and still holds the 880m record at his collegiate alma mater (they stopped running it shortly after he graduated). 😉

Coaches Al Hoekstra & Brian Diemer, my college coaches, as well as Coaches Larry Wieczorek and Layne Anderson who I volunteered with at the University of Iowa have had a big influence as well in my approach to coaching athletes as individuals. I have taken a lot of different things from my running & coaching mentors to build them into my personal approach – looking at the whole athlete & big picture to build plans that are structured but flexible and not just train the runner physically, but mentally as well.
