Philosophy

My coaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that running is more than miles and finish lines. It’s a tool for growth, healing, and self-discovery. I aim to help athletes build strength and resilience while embracing both the wins and the struggles that come with the sport. Every runner is unique, and so are their goals. My role is to guide you with personalized training, encouragement, and honest feedback so you can become the best version of yourself both in training and in everyday life.

Coaching Experience

Since June 2024, I’ve been coaching athletes of all levels, from beginners to elite runners. Whether you’re chasing personal records, tackling your first marathon, or simply striving to become a stronger, more confident athlete, my goal is to inspire a love for running and help you embrace both the challenges and rewards the sport has to offer.

About Me

I’m Tanner, based in North Carolina, a state I like to call the Midwest of the South. I moved here in 2021 and quickly fell in love with its natural beauty. I started running in 2023 for health reasons but became hooked for the challenge it provides. My first race was a trail event on St. Patrick’s Day, where I finished covered in green dye, a moment that sparked my passion for racing. Since then, I’ve completed multiple half marathons, full marathons, and two 50 mile ultramarathons. My goal is to help others experience the physical and mental benefits of running and to show that with the right mindset and consistency, big challenges in running and life are achievable.

Big Influences

One of my biggest inspirations is Sally McRae, an ultra runner whose resilience and mindset shape how I approach running and challenges. I also run in memory of my Aunt Dana, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 37 after battling colon cancer and living with epilepsy and intellectual disabilities. I think of her often, and she reminds me that life is short and that we should pursue meaningful challenges when we have the ability to do so, both in running and in life.

    Tanner has been my guiding light in training for my first 50 miler on May 2nd. He meets you where you are, responds quickly to all questions, programs workouts ahead of schedule, and provides excellent feedback. Not only have I learned valuable information on running form, climbing technique, and downhill mechanics, but he has also heavily focused on dialing in my race day nutrition early on. Tanner also implements rest days and deload weeks when appropriate, which has prevented me from burning out or getting injured. He has a way of breaking up the training block with creative workouts, so it does not get boring or monotonous. I have noticed an improvement in my overall fitness and running economy ever since I started training with Tanner and I am sure I will feel very confident at the start line come race day.

Living in what feels like a winter tundra, I’ve appreciated how flexible he’s been with my training, whether that means heading to the track or hopping on the treadmill. Tanner is incredibly supportive and continually pushes me to improve, introducing new techniques and guidance on fueling that have made a real difference. What I value most is the honesty I can share with him; I can tell him when a run was rough or when I chose a route that felt uphill both ways, and he always responds with encouragement and solutions.     To start, Tanner is an amazing coach!! I have been running off and on for a couple of years but I never set a running goal for myself. When I met Tanner, he was a running genius. He knows how to optimize your runs to get the most out of every single training session so you aren’t wasting time and energy. He understands that life gets busy but at the same rate, he holds you accountable to your goals that you have set for yourself. That is the MAIN quality to look for when seeking out a coach. He makes the training sessions stress free with the use of detailed training plans and fueling plans. You know exactly what you are to do when running and training so you aren’t lost or guessing what you should do. Running is a sport that requires your brain to be in a zone of peace. Tanner asks you questions on your training plans to help keep your mind pre-occupied but also helps you search deeper within yourself. Another great quality that Tanner has is his personality. Nobody likes a coach that is the equivalent to a brick wall personality wise. He will cut up and joke around but at the end of the day, he will be stern and keep you aligned with your goals. I personally recommend Tanner to every runner that I meet. Whether you are a beginner or an expert runner, Tanner will have your back and will help you grow personally, mentally, and physically.
