Specialties
I bring a background in track, XC, roads and trails, 800m – marathon. I have worked with beginners to sub-elite, injured and post injured athletes, older athletes, and runners targeting a BQ.
Philosophy
I have number of philosophies around running I have accumulated over the years. Running clubs are a great resource. Join one for running tips, camaraderie, and to add some fun to your running.
Speaking of which, running is not the only thing happening in life. Pick up another hobby just in case you become injured.
Nothing beats sleep and nutrition for recovery.
I look to understand your strengths to create racing strategy and build weaknesses into strengths.
Put the watch down! Learn how efforts and paces feel.
Have fun even in the midst of a training block.
Coaching Experience
I have coached on-and-off for 35 years. I started at high school XC running camps, middle school track, and then individuals racing roads and trails.
About Me
I am an introvert, but love being around any amount of fellow runners. I enjoy a sweet snack or a pint of ice cream. And I geek out with any discipline of running (and field events). If you need a narrator for a track & field meet, I’m your guy. Additionally, I am a massage therapist at Harvard University focusing on injured athletes of all levels. Pet peeve is that athletes (anyone) think a massage needs to hurt to be effective. If you are sore or injured, why do you want to hurt more? This is recovery time. I love a road trip starting from anywhere. I have been all over the country, have run in over 30 states and a few countries. I have also directed races and am now creating a low key series of races in my area from road miles to road and trail relays to track races. I have springer spaniel named Maya. My wife’s name is Nanci and we are about to celebrate our 15th anniversary.
Big Influences
I think my biggest influence has been being a runner at the high school and college level in understanding the need for an off-season. In regards to training styles, I like the Hanson’ approach for new marathoners, more of a Lydiard/ Canova mix for advanced runners, and a Jack Daniels approach for shorter distances.
Race History
I have raced everything from 400m on the track to XC, roads and trails up to the marathon distance. I love a challenging race or an adventure with the only goal is to see what nature is hiding off the road.
