SPECIALTIES

I love helping motivated athletes step up in distance, run their first ultra, or take the next step in their running journey!

In particular I can help with strength and injury prevention, improving speed, lifestyle and exercise nutrition and technical trail running.

Distances from half marathon and up are my main focus, but I also believe it’s important to be a well rounded athlete and be able to run/races at all distances.

PHILOSOPHY

My number one goal with my athletes is to ensure a long and happy / healthy running career. I will help you achieve this by providing you with an individualized training plan that uses science backed, proven methods to improve in the areas you need it most! I also make sure your training fits in with your lifestyle and other life commitments.

I believe running economy and aerobic capacity are the two biggest determinants of performance at any distance / ability, and tailor all my programs around these two factors to make you the best runner possible.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

I started coaching with Team RunRun in 2021 after coaching myself, family and friends since 2016. I’ve coached athletes to PR’s, BQ’s, achieving stretch goals (first marathon, first ultra), and athletes with no goals other than to improve their health and fitness. I have also coached athletes of all ages and abilities, including some athletes pre, during and post pregnancy, and multiple athletes with Type 1 diabetes.

I am always looking to improve my knowledge of training, racing, nutrition and strength through continued learning and my own research.

ABOUT ME

My running journey began when I was five years old at my local athletics club. Over time I progressed to be a national level sprinter winning medals in the 100m & 200m at both state and national championships.

After work and family life became too busy to commit to full time sprinting, I took some time off and started running longer distances to keep fit. This pretty quickly progressed to marathons and then ultra marathons once I realised the benefits and joys of endurance running!

I now prefer to run longer trail ultras, but enjoy literally any type of running!

I also live a plant based lifestyle, and enjoy finding tasty new recipes to make for my family.

BIG INFLUENCES

The biggest influence on my coaching has come from David and Megan Roche. I find not only their coaching philosophies but general life approach to be amazing.

Other influences include Team RunRun founder Matt Urbanski, Shawn Bearden and Mark Green.

RACING HISTORY

I have raced everything from 100 metres to 100 miles!

Some of my recent races include:

  • Six Foot Track Marathon
  • Backyard Blister (backyard ultra)
  • Ultra Trail Australia 50km and 100km
  • Run Larapinta Stage Race
  • Ultra-Trail Kosciuszko 100 mile

After becoming quite sedentary during Covid, Tom helped me ease into getting active again. He’s created a plan specific to my needs and has helped me go from walking to achieving my first 10k trail race without walking any of it. Tom is very encouraging and always knows just the right amount to push. Having the plan, accountability and encouragement has been great for me. I highly recommend Tom, his coaching is top notch! I’m going into my third year with Tom and excited about it!

I’ve been coached by Tom for about 9 months now and could not recommend him enough. When I first started, I could barely run 400m without stopping. I just finished my first half marathon and couldn’t have done it without Tom! He has changed the way I think about running in such a positive way. He is approachable, encouraging and always makes time for me. He also understands what its like to train with a job and kids and works with you. I cannot thank him enough for the positivity he’s brought to my training

Tom has been coaching me since 2022 and he has been absolutely incredible! Not only will he turn you into a better more efficient runner he will also assist with nutrition and injury management! If it wasn’t for Tom i would not have been able to still run during an achilles injury and then be able to run the race I had signed up for! Tom is also great at fitting your running around your life, due to my work I have a very random roster of day and night shifts and Tom still takes the time to sit down and write my program around my complicated work schedule you won’t get that sort of attention from another coach! Whether you’re an experienced runner or completely new and looking to run your first 5K Tom is the coach for you!

Tom has been outstanding as a running coach. Not only has he been flexible in customising the programming around family, work and sickness his genuineness and being open for questions and feedback is excellent.

His knowledge around running compliments this. I have achieved PB’s in 10km’s and marathon distance in just 5-6 months.

Tom is a fantastic coach. I’d had enough of ‘winging it’ after trialing different running plans online, I needed a human element and someone to check in on me and monitor my progress.

Tom is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and positive coach. He puts me at ease and encourages me at every step of the way. Having Tom as my coach has made me really enjoy running, and absolutely takes the stress out of planning.

I started running with Tom when I moved to Newcastle 2 months ago. Returning to running after an injury, Tom understood the importance of strength and stability work and easing back into the km’s. I have really valued Tom’s encouragement and positive nature and would recommend Tom for anyone looking to start running or looking to improve their time’s and distances. Thanks Tom

His personalized training plans and attention to detail have pushed me beyond my limits, supported by his encouragement and positive attitude. I appreciate the way his challenges me to strive for excellence while also making sure that I am taking care of my body and avoiding injury. His general communication and feedback is very good and the program he’s had me on since the start is very well tailored to my needs and lifestyle. I’ve been a runner for 25 years and this is my first experience with a running coach and I’ve been so impressed! Tom has an incredible gift for individualizing plans. He has been able to help craft a training program that works around work and family obligations while staying focused on goals. The plans he creates are intentional; each run has a purpose and I feel that I’m becoming a smarter runner because of my time with Tom. In addition to great guidance, Tom is wonderful to work with as a coach. We live half a world apart yet he is super responsive to messages, proactive on communication, and fully engaged in our plan. I love working with Tom and highly recommend him to anyone who wants to get to the next level with their running.

I am a 51 year old type 1 diabetic. I have experience in running half/full marathons but decided to take on the challenge of an ultramarathon/trail/uphill. I chose Tom due to learning he is a plant based athlete and has experience with type 1 diabetes. We live on opposite sides of the moon, however he makes the time to have zoom meetings with me and is extremely responsive to my emails/questions. He tailors my program to my needs and is very patient with me when I need to make schedule changes. He educates me with videos/podcasts which have greatly helped my stability/core/form on the trail. I am so much enjoying the challenges of my running and core workouts. I have never felt as fit as I am now and I placed 6th out of 87 in my age group in a race I have been running for years and usually finish in the middle! Thank you so much Tom!

At 50 I decided I wanted to learn to run and was so fortunate to stumble across Tom. Having no real experience with running, being prone to injury and having low cardio fitness, I wasn’t sure if this was something I could even achieve. Tom has taken the time to listen and adapt a program to suit my individual needs and is extremely encouraging. I have been amazed at how far I have come under his guidance and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone who is looking for a coach.

Tom is an outstanding coach. He has greatly improved my running, outlook, and confidence within a short time frame. He has tailored the training to my individual needs, goals, and feedback, and he puts a lot of thought and attention into his plans, including strength and long-term planning. Moreover, he is flexible and modifies the plan to accommodate my changing schedule. I appreciate how generous Tom is with his time and feedback. He is very responsive, supportive, enthusiastic, and accessible. His coaching is an incredible value and definitely worth the investment in your running. If you are looking for an encouraging and attentive coach, I highly recommend Tom!
