SPECIALTIES

As a United Endurance Sports Academy (UESCA) certified Ultra Running coach, I specialize in the unique physiological and demands of Trail and Ultra Running. As most Ultras compete on trails with varying terrain. They can be steep mountains with loose rock, rolling single track, a gravel path and likely a mixture of two or more types. This training will help me develop a plan to tackle for four disciplines to ultra and trail running (running uphill, running downhill, running flats and power hiking). Ultra and Trail races will require unique fueling, hydration, physical care, environmental / physiological adaptations, and mental preparation. I am here to work with you on all aspects of the specificities of trail / ultra running that go above and beyond a typical road racing event.

PHILOSOPHY

My coaching philosophy is rooted in coach / athlete feedback loops. Which means there are no cookie cutter plans that I apply to my athletes. We discuss your seasonal goals, create a development plan which will move physiological, mental and mechanical adaptations from least to most specific. This means we will spend ample time focusing on areas or improvement and letting your strengths as an athlete shine! I began coaching athletes for a love of learning more about trail and ultra running, and the learning does not stop. You will get a coach that is constantly looking at the latest scientific data and using that information to improve training plans in real time!

  • Personalized training plans (No cookie cutter plans)
  • Constant Coach / Athlete Feedback Loop (Race Specific Guidance and training updates)
Time based training activities (Enhance the mental and physiological demands for trail and ultra running)
  • Rate of Perceived Exertion pacing (Varying terrain, climbing, and duration make time based pace less effective on trail and ultras)
  • Continuous Learning Encouragement for both the athlete and me as a coach
  • Developing athletes from least to most specific race conditions

COACHING EXPERIENCE

UESCA Certified Ultrarunning Coach

I have been coaching / mentoring in sports since my teenage years, recently developing a focus on ultra and trail running distances. I have been working with other runners and athletes for a few years, non “official” coach, on improving performance and success and looking forward to building on that going forward

I have been assistant coaching my sons baseball teams for the last 4 years and was a Boy Scout Den Leader for 6 years.

ABOUT ME

I live in Plymouth, MI. Normally you will find me running the dirt roads and trails of western Wayne and eastern Washtenaw counties.

I enjoy traveling with my wife and two sons. Most of our vacations are outdoor focused with miles of hikes and views to explore. Some of our favorite places have been Sedona, AZ, Frisco, CO, and Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula.

On weekends (when my son doesn’t have a soccer tournament) we travel to northern Michigan to get away from the city bustle and take in the quiet of nature. You will likely find my with a fly rod in my hand searching for trout on the Au Sable River.

Other Hobbies:
Kayaking
Hiking
Mountain Biking

BIG INFLUENCES

  • Michael McKnight – @lowcarbrunner – It’s amazing how he can crush long distance races
  • Jason Koop – I really like Jason’s training philosophy
  • Courtney Dauwalter – I don’t think another human being has more fun racing than her
  • Jeff Browning – Dude is killing it and showing that you don’t need to slow down as you get older
  • Harvey Lewis – Just a super happy, friendly runner, who is also crazy fast and good at Backyards

RACING HISTORY

  • I ran cross country 3 years in high-school
  • Chicago Marathon 2016 and 2017
  • Bryce Canyon 50k – 7:28 (2021)
  • Run Woodstock 50k – 5:06 (2021)
  • Lake Norman 50k – 4:33 (2021)
  • Marquette Trail 50m – 11:57 (2022)
  • Birkie Trail Marathon – 4:20 (2022)
  • One of my biggest accomplishments is taking home the Season Trail Running (G.O.A.T. Series) award for my Age Group and placing second overall. The races ranged from 5k to 50k. It is significant because it showed me that racing can be used in a training cycle as well as showing I can still be a durable runner.

CERTIFICATIONS

  • UESCA Ultrarunning Certification

PRs

PRs in the trail and ultrarunning are difficult to compare. Weather, trails conditions and terrain all have significant impacts on times, but here are some accomplishments. 2022 had a number of firsts, including many of the PRs below and racing a 50M, 50k, and marathon in under a 5 week span.

Here are some Trail PRs:

  • 5k – 20:15 1st OA
  • 10k – 43:58 4th OA
  • Half Marathon – 1:40 3rd OA
  • Marathon – 4:20 10th OA 2nd AG
  • 50k – 4:33 3rd OA
  • 50M – 11:57 21 OA

Carl is an amazing human being and a terrific coach. He is very attentive and his style of coaching is research/evidence based while maintaining flexibility that keeps things fresh and fun! He has been very encouraging, and I am seeing gains regularly! I love that he strives to understand my goals, but is always asking questions to keep me alert to early signs of overdoing it. He has kept me injury free and excited about the next challenge. I highly recommend him, and can’t say enough good things about him!
