SPECIALTIES

My specialties as a coach lie in working with beginner to advanced athletes of all ages preparing for 3-mile/5k races, as well as distances of 800m, 1600m, and 3200m on various terrains including grass, trails, tracks, or roads. While my primary focus is on these distances, I also have experience and can provide guidance for athletes training for distances ranging from 10k to the half marathon.

PHILOSOPHY

My coaching philosophy centers around the transformative power of running to facilitate personal growth, both physically and mentally. I firmly believe that running has the capacity to instill confidence and drive individuals to surpass their perceived limitations, unlocking untapped potential along the way.

In my role as a coach, I am committed to working closely with each athlete, recognizing their unique strengths, challenges, and aspirations. I believe in tailoring training programs to their individual needs and goals, leveraging innovation and adaptability to ensure optimal results. As a coach, it’s my responsibility to help athletes set realistic yet challenging goals, serving as a constant source of support and guidance throughout their journey.

Effective communication is essential in fostering a collaborative relationship between athlete and coach. I prioritize clear and open communication, viewing coaching as a team effort rather than a one-sided endeavor. By maintaining transparent dialogue, I aim to empower athletes to take ownership of their training and progress.

Furthermore, I am dedicated to continuous learning and improvement as a coach. Reflecting on past training methods and outcomes, I strive to identify what worked well and areas for improvement. I invest time in researching and staying aware of developments in training techniques and sports science to better serve the individual needs of each athlete.

In terms of training, I believe in a balance of endurance and speed based training, regardless of what distance we are training for. Focusing on both of these muscle groups is essential for any distance and will make them a more well-rounded runner. I also provide support and guidance through other areas like balance, strength building, and injury-prevention to ensure that the athlete remains happy and healthy along their running journey.

In essence, my coaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that running is not merely a physical activity but a journey of self-discovery and growth. By embracing individuality, fostering collaboration, and prioritizing ongoing learning, I aim to empower athletes to achieve their goals and realize their full potential.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

For the past 7 years, I’ve been deeply involved in coaching, starting as a volunteer coach during my student teaching years. Since graduating from college, I’ve continued coaching cross country and track at various high schools in the Chicago suburbs. Over this time, I’ve had the privilege of guiding numerous athletes to remarkable achievements, including multiple All-State recognitions in both sports. All of these athletes have gone on to compete at Division 1 universities nationwide.

In addition to coaching elite athletes, I’ve also worked extensively with beginner and intermediate runners. I specialize in helping individuals set personalized goals, tailor training regimens to their abilities, and achieve significant personal bests. My coaching approach emphasizes individualized attention and support to unlock each athlete’s full potential. Even though my experience is tied to working with high school athletes, I know that I can also provide the same support and guidance to anyone, regardless of age or skill level.

ABOUT ME

Hello! I’m Dean, a dedicated teacher and coach from the Chicago Suburbs, where I’ve embraced its unique charm throughout my life. Despite the weather’s challenges, I often remind my athletes that “We’re building character!”

I thrive on pushing boundaries and exploring new horizons—whether it’s challenging myself physically, mentally, or creatively. Recently, I’ve been immersing myself in the world of music by teaching myself how to play the mandolin!

Beyond my teaching and coaching, I find joy in activities like kayaking, making music, and spending time with loved ones. However, running holds a special place in my heart. It’s been a cornerstone of my life since I was 10, shaping who I am today and fostering invaluable relationships. Now, as a high school cross country and track coach, I’m privileged to guide my student athletes toward their running aspirations while supporting their personal growth every step of the way. Furthermore, I am passionate about contributing more to the running community by helping people of all ages and skill levels achieve their goals.

BIG INFLUENCES

One of the most profound influences on my coaching style stems from my former cross country and track coach during high school. His unwavering belief in every athlete’s potential for greatness through running deeply resonated with me. He demonstrated genuine care for each team member’s success, forging strong relationships by understanding their individual training challenges and personal struggles.

Every practice session was infused with his contagious passion and positivity, setting the tone for the team’s collective drive and resulting in numerous remarkable performances. He cultivated a tight-knit community characterized by enduring friendships, a testament to his supportive approach while also maintaining exceptionally high standards.

I strive to embody these qualities in my coaching, aiming to foster both excellence and camaraderie among my student athletes. By maintaining high standards while offering unwavering support, I strive to empower them to achieve their fullest potential both in races and in life.

RACING HISTORY

One of the most significant races in my running career occurred during high school when I aimed to qualify for the Illinois Cross Country State Finals with my team. Throughout my senior year cross country season, this goal served as my driving force. At the Sectional Meet, where qualification was on the line, I summoned my utmost effort despite facing adverse conditions of rain and cold on a challenging course, almost running a personal best. But even though my teammates and I gave our best effort, we fell short of qualifying and I never achieved my goal. This experience taught me invaluable lessons.

While the outcome was disappointing at the time, I now recognize its impact on my coaching philosophy. Approaching that race with fearlessness and pushing beyond my perceived limits has shaped how I guide athletes. I strive to instill the same determination and resilience in every athlete I coach, encouraging them to exceed their expectations when they step up to the starting line.
