PHILOSOPHY

My biggest belief is that the training has to work for *you.* Running is this amazing this we get to do, but it also needs to build well into our entire life. Developing training that blends well into your life and lifestyle without overloading gives you the best race possible. Bringing the workouts to you works so much better than pulling a training plan off a website and trying make it work without looking at the whole person.

With running specifics, I love developing plans specific to a course and to someone’s goals on it (a mountain course is a lot different than a road race), and also how both trail running and road running can support each other, building a well-rounded and even fitter athlete. I also believe there is a good place in someone’s training for varied seasons and cross-training (skiing, cycling, etc.) if they want do that, and that it can actually help their running. On top of this, I really believe in looking at all the levers we can pull to make you better on race day beyond running, including race nutrition, strength, gear/shoe selection, and heat training.

COACHING EXPERIENCE

I’ve been coaching in various forms for nearly 15 years now. Along with some friends, I started the first college ultrarunning team in the country back in 2011 at Virginia Tech (still going strong!). After this I began personal training at the college as an avenue to coaching both newer club members to their first ultra and coaching students to races from 5k to the marathon. I’ve been coaching a few people a year to their goals ever since.

I also work full time as a physical therapist assistant where a majority of my work is in developing progressive plans for orthopedic issues and improving conditioning for pre- and post- surgery patients.

ABOUT ME

I’m from a small town in Southwest Virginia and have been living in Boulder, Colorado since 2014. When I started running cross country in 2004 I was so slow that I once finished a 5k race after they had broken down the finish line! This spurred me into learning what I could to be a better runner and I’ve been on that journey ever since, getting a little better every year. I also work as a physical therapist assistant here in Boulder. I love ski touring in the winter and getting out for bike rides (mostly for coffee and pastries) in the summer. My wife and I ran Mount Kilimanjaro on our honeymoon and then climbed Mont Blanc before doing the TMB in 2023. I love all of running: trails, mountains, roads, track. In Boulder I run with Rocky Mountain Runners and host the weekly Monday night run on Green Mountain.

I am also a race director, directing the previous Divide 100 that will become a new event in the same area in 2024.

BIG INFLUENCES

I’ve learned a bit from every coach I’ve had–three coaches during high school from an excited father to an ex-pro cyclist. I worked with Adam St Pierre for several years who showed me how better to incorporate cross-training. Most recently, the Norwegian Method has been very influential to me. I’ve also been very fortunate to run with runners far better than I am with Rocky Mountain Runners, and do my best to listen to what they have to teach me.

RACING HISTORY

I ran my first marathon my senior year of high school and my first ultra after my freshman year of college. Since 2010 I’ve run 55 ultras, including a few FKTs and long ‘adventure’ runs, following my stoke back and forth between the trails and roads. My first ultra (50 Miles) went as poorly as it could to still finish, and I could barely walk for a few weeks after. Then I won the Bighorn 50 mile in 2017, my only race win ever. This past November I ran 81 miles for 12 hours, which put me at #6 on the all time list for Ireland. I was the first to run the Rocky Mountain Grand Loop since the two who first conceived it in the 1920s.

These I love picking races to explore an area I wouldn’t otherwise (Mount Baker in Washington, San Jacinto in California, Manitou’s Revenge in New York).
