PHILOSOPHY

Anyone with a love for running (or an openness to grow towards it) & a willingness to commit to a daily process is capable of great things in distance running! I don’t limit people based on background or previous performance. Everyone is capable of large improvements in this sport & is capable of expanding their limits beyond where they thought possible. I have the knowledge & experience to provide the confidence that I can help anyone with a shared philosophy achieve or exceed some big goals in running!

Lifestyle & Training Foundation

Live Well, Move Well, Run Well

  • Live Well – Give athletes lifestyle guidance to help them remove the physical, mental, & emotional barriers that are holding them back from reaching their potential. Give athletes the knowledge & tools to help them feel better in daily life & to allow them to thrive outside of the sport.
  • Move Well – Help athletes remove the postural, mobility, & movement barriers that are holding them back from reaching their potential. Give athletes the knowledge & tools to create efficient movement patterns within daily life as well as within training & racing.
  • Run Well – With lifestyle & movement barriers removed, athletes can enjoy training & racing & can thrive within the training. New levels of training can be reached, allowing new levels of fitness & confidence, allowing new levels of racing performance.

Training Priorities

  • With the Live Well, Move Well, Run Well as a foundation, the focus of the training plan typically revolves around Aerobic Efficiency & Mechanical Efficiency. I help you develop in these primary areas, while also helping you become a well-rounded athlete through small, but consistent, doses of training with other types of focus.
  • Of course, the priorities as well as the execution of the training also depends on which event/s you are training for, so this will dictate individualization. Your training will also be individualized based on your previous training history, goals, & lifestyle factors (time, energy, stress, etc. outside of training).
  • You don’t need to have the capacity to implement all of the lifestyle guidance that I give you in order to thrive & to see great improvement. I am happy to meet you where you are & to help you progress with however much time & energy you have available to give to this sport!

COACHING EXPERIENCE

  • 19 Years of Middle & Long Distance Coaching Experience
  • Team Coaching Experience = High School, College (NAIA, NCAA Dlll, NCAA Dll, NCAA Dl)
  • Additional Individual Coaching Experience = Track, Road, Trail from 800m to 100 Mile Ultramarathon

ABOUT ME

I am a follower of Christ, Husband, & Father of 4! I love running & coaching as well as the outdoors, trails, music, travel, etc. My personality is generally pretty laid back, but I am passionate about coaching & this sport & can get pretty excited in this context. I have lived all over the United States as well as over 2 years in South Africa.

I have been a student of distance running since high school & honestly spend a lot of my time becoming a better coach not just as a job, but as a hobby & passion!

BIG INFLUENCES

I have been blessed to be coached by many amazing coaches with very different personalities & training philosophies. I have been involved in many high school & college programs at a variety of levels for a very long time & have gained insight from each one. I have studied this sport deeply & studied coaching deeply from a variety of angles.

All that said, my coaching philosophy is constantly evolving & is influenced by every good & logical piece of information I can find from a wide variety of coaches, friends, & from experience!

RACING HISTORY

Though I am likely retired from racing, I LOVE to race! In high school I raced every chance I could get from track races to trail races to road races to cross country races of a variety of distances! I’ve always loved to challenge myself & test my limits, both in training & in racing.
The two races that probably stand out to me most were both within a couple months of each other in my 4th year of college. These races stand out because I was very fit, very confident, & I remember vividly how calm I was able to stay mentally & emotionally, which is a key to great racing performance.

2007 NCAA Dl Pre-Nationals Cross Country Meet
8000m in 24:00 on the rolling hills course at Indiana State in Terre Haute, IN
I was able to remain calm & confident enough & FEEL the pace well enough to run almost exactly even splits of 4:50 per mile the entire race. This took going out around 150th place in the early stages of the race to working my way up to flying by people in the second half of the race, finishing in 43rd place.

2007 Liberty University Opener Indoor Meet
5000m in 14:22 on a 4-lane, 200m, flat indoor track
I was VERY fit & confident coming into this race & even though a teammate who was going to help pace me dropped out early in the race, I was able to remain calm & carry out the race plan. I also spent the second half of the race with the skin ripped off of most of my arch on one foot, but was able to stay relaxed through that as well!

Great races aren’t about what you do when everything is perfect, but in how you respond when everything is not!

    Ariana Trevino

Coach Jarvis Jelen has been instrumental in enhancing and guiding my running journey significantly. I initially had the privilege of being coached by him at ACU, and upon graduating, I was keen on continuing my training for a marathon under his guidance. What sets Coach Jelen apart is not just the remarkable progress I’ve made in my running endeavors under his guidance, but also his unwavering support during challenging times, prompt responses to my questions/concerns (no matter how silly they may seem), and his adeptness at aligning my training with my personal goals and interests, including integrating enjoyable running events into the regimen.

His dedication and support have been invaluable—I completed my first marathon in a time of 3 hours and 15 minutes under his guidance and am currently preparing for the Boston Marathon with ambitious goals, supported by his belief in my capabilities. Coach Jelen’s approach is marked by his commitment to tailor training sessions to suit my individual needs and preferences, accommodating my hectic schedule as a full-time graduate student and employee.

Furthermore, Coach Jelen’s impact extends beyond individual achievements. His creation of a vibrant running culture has fostered lasting connections among my former teammates, who continue to run and stay in touch to this day. Rather than leaving us burnt out, Coach Jelen’s approach has instilled in us a renewed excitement for running, making every mile a source of joy and camaraderie. Looking ahead, I eagerly anticipate continuing our coaching partnership for shorter distance races, as I am confident that his expertise and tailored training plans will continue to propel me toward achieving my goals. Coach Jelen’s influence extends beyond mere training sessions; he fosters a supportive and enriching environment that inspires growth and success in every aspect of my running journey.
