SPECIALTIES
I think that I can coach any distance. I have trained for all sorts of events in my 18 years as a competitive athlete and have developed an understanding of all sorts of training techniques. In that time I have kind of become a jack of all trades. I have learned about strength training, nutrition, recovery from injuries, and peak mental performance. I think one of my best strengths as a coach is in sharing things that I have learned with my athletes in order to help them take ownership of their training.
PHILOSOPHY
I have three guiding principles when it comes to helping athletes achieve their goals. The first is prioritizing getting my athletes to the line healthy and fresh over everything else. So many times I have seen amateurs try to squeeze every last ounce out of a training block only to be fried or hurt on race day. My second guiding principle is building a foundation of aerobic strength. I think that you have to start with “strength” work and then you can add speed and power to a strong athlete. It’s really hard to start with speed and power and then add strength work. My final guiding principle is specificity. You have to train athletes for their goals, I don’t believe in cookie cutter training templates.
COACHING EXPERIENCE
I have been coaching since 2012 when I was a youth track coach. In that time I have coached athletes from 7 to in their 60s. I have coached people who are just trying to finish their first marathon all the way up to people trying to break 2:20 in the marathon.
ABOUT ME
I have been a professional runner for 9 years, been top 10 three times at Boston and twice at NYC. I have broken 2:10:00 four times and have a PB of 2:08:52. I am also a burrito enthusiast, 10 handicap on the golf course, and an author of Inside A Marathon – my book about getting 7th at the 2018 NYC Marathon..
BIG INFLUENCES
Just like everyone, I am influenced by the coaches I’ve had. So, I have taken some stuff from Rob Conner the legendary University of Portland coach, some from my coach at NAZ Elite Ben Rosario, and some from Joe Bosshard. All these coaches are more similar than different in terms of coaching philosophy. All of them prioritize strength and then add speed to a really good base or aerobic and threshold work.

SOCIAL
Jeff –
Scott is everything I’ve always wanted in a coach. He’s attentive, interested, and very approachable. He understands that for me as an athlete who isn’t a full time professional athlete life can sometimes require adjusting schedules. He’s always reachable and wants to be involved in decisions on adjusting workouts if effort or fatigue or something is an issue that week and takes all of the second guessing or self adjustments out. I’ve worked with numerous coaches in the last 10 years and he’s the best I’ve found.
Ville Sjöman –
I have been working with Scott for two and a half months, and our process has been very solid. I really appreciate his approach to training. He has always been more than happy to answer all my questions and consistently ensures, week by week, that we are on the right track.
Conor McCabe –
Scott is the real deal. I have been working with him for marathon training as well as half marathon/10 milers. He’s incredibly helpful. Working with Scott my times have not only improved but he’s also just made me a more confident and strategic runner. He’s very responsive and builds plans that work best for you. When I was working a job that required me to travel 2-3 weeks out of a month often on short notice—while also training for a marathon—he changed and tweaked our plan that got me to the starting line healthy and I set a PB.
Work with Scott! You won’t regret it!
