Philosophy
I believe running should be fun. All goals and training should be built around enjoying the process and it is important to me that someone loves running for a long time, rather than burning themselves out achieving goals that don’t matter. By focusing on passion and adventure, the results will come naturally. I will work with you to understand what is most important and craft a plan that will allow you to become a more well-rounded runner while falling in love with the work that it takes to do so.
Coaching Experience
I have coached many people to their first marathons/ultramarathons. Many folks need that extra push to get over the edge and I’m happy to give that support. I’ve worked with experienced athletes trying to achieve new distances, to folks trying to get off the couch and unlocking new potential.
Additionally, I spent much of my childhood wrestling and have coached youth wrestling. Many of the mental tools translate great to running!
About Me
I grew up in northern Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Sports Management. I spent my childhood cycling through different sports, focusing mostly on running. I credit this to honing in on lifelong skills such as discipline and work ethic. Nothing I have done in life since has compared to wrestling in terms of how physically demanding and mentally taxing wrestling was.
I first started running at the age of 15, when I joined cross country. I immediately fell in love with the culture, community, and work that went into it. Many sports tend to reward talent, regardless of work ethic. Running, however, appealed to me because I feel there is a direct correlation between what someone is putting into it versus what they are getting out of it.
Since college, I’ve been living a nomadic life. Lots of traveling around and exploring. I’m often found camping, backpacking, and living the “dirtbag” life in nature as much as possible. I have had a few stints in Colorado and am enthralled with completing long routes in the rocky mountains.
Big Influences
I’m influenced a bit by everybody. Everyone I meet in the trail running/ultra space has unique experience and I try to be as open-minded as possible and take a little bit from everyone to form my own values and philosophies.
I’m drawn towards people that have clear, deep why’s beyond results and those who enjoy the simple things such as spending time on trail and being content with that.
