3 Bests – What aspects of the race did you like the most?

  • I loved the trails around Lake Hodges
  • The aid stations are awesome and well stocked with food and motivated volunteers!
  • Downhill and flat last couple of miles.

Not so much – Aspects of the race that didn’t do it for you

On my part I showed up with literally 3 minutes to the start.

Highlights of your race – What did you do well and enjoy about your race in particular?

For a 50 mile trail race this is a very fast flat course which can be misleading as you try to pace the first half and second half of this race. I was blazing in the cool weather for the first half and then the heat of the day came and slowed me down, due to lack of drinking fluids on my part. Finished fast and downhill was a wonderful yet painful feeling as you hammer toward home with the #mambamentality!

Lessons for others – Share your pro-tips on the race to help the next runner

Pace… pace… pace yourself.

Lessons you learned that will help you next time around

Pace… pace… pace yourself. It will get warm out there.

Most important course specific knowledge to know about the race

It is an out and back course but the way back has an off shoot for about 4 miles or so that can mentally fatigue you more than the run.

Aesthetics – Is it a pretty course?

The course is 90% gorgeous and 10% flat farm type land. The views are amazing at points.

Difficulty – Is it a tough course?

The only difficult part of this race is the final stretch up Raptor Ridge and down the flat 3 miles at the end.

Organized and well run – Did it feel like a well-oiled machine or were they flying by the seat of their pants?

Organized well and went off flawlessly!

Competition – Is there a strong field?

The field is getting more and more competitive and faster.

Logistics – Does it require a special handshake, registration a year in advance, hotels all booked? Give us the low down on the nuts and bolts of making the race happen.

No, just read the directions beforehand.

Weather and typical race conditions

Cold start and warm throughout.

Spectators – Is this a friendly course for your friends?

Very spectator friendly course.

How’s the Swag?

The swag is okay but it not a reasonably priced race. The finishing award and mug are HOT!!!

The Overall Score – How many stars do you give this race and do you recommend that others run it?

4/5 stars

3 Bests – What aspects of the race did you like the most?

  • Great itinerary that shows a lot of the city
  • Fantastic finish inside Petco Park with athletes shown on big screen
  • Solid organization despite the 6K runners (parking, aid stations, easy in and out of race)

Not so much – Aspects of the race that didn’t do it for you

Overall everything was quite positive. One thing I didn’t like was that a lot of people didn’t respect their wave number and a lot of people pushed to be in wave 1 creating a very busy start line.

Highlights of your race – What did you do well and enjoy about your race in particular?

For the first time, I followed a pacer who helped me push harder than I would on my own. I was able to manage my pace well, and for the last 3 miles, I stayed close to another runner and we pushed each other until the end. I usually get worried when my pace is too fast compared to my normal training pace, but this race showed me that I have more in the tank and I’m able to push harder than I thought.

Lessons for others – Share your pro-tips on the race to help the next runner

  • No need to arrive super early. I got there 30 minutes before the start of the race, was able to park right across from the start line, and still have plenty of time to drop my bag and warm up.
  • The course is mostly flat until mile 9 where there is a short but very steep hill before some more flat. But then mile 10 starts with a 0.75 mile steep hill that is hard for the mind. When you think you’ve reached the top, there’s another 0.25 miles left.
  • The last 3 miles are downhill and a great opportunity to make up time

Lessons you learned that will help you next time around

My main lesson is that I can start faster than I thought and still be able to manage my pace and overall run well.

Most important course specific knowledge to know about the race

Be prepared for the hill at mile 10

Aesthetics – Is it a pretty course?

Yes – there are a couple of miles where the scenery is not that great, but overall it’s a pretty course.

Difficulty – Is it a tough course?

It’s not difficult besides that one hill.

Organized and well run – Did it feel like a well-oiled machine or were they flying by the seat of their pants?

Very well organized through out.

Competition – Is there a strong field?

My time put me in the first 8% so I would say that competition is not that strong considering I’m not super fast 🙂

Aid Stations – Standard fare or anything special to know about the aid stations in terms of what’s available or when?

Aid stations every 2-3 miles, which make them important because missing one toward the end may mean no water for several miles.

Weather and typical race conditions

We have a cold winter for San Diego but we still had a sunny day and started the race at around 52 degrees which was perfect!

Gear – Did you need anything special or is there anything you’d recommend for the next guy?

No – nothing special needed

Spectators – Is this a friendly course for your friends?

Yes – plenty of opportunities for friends to cheer along the course and be in the stadium for the arrival.

How’s the Swag?

Pretty good – strong baseball theme. Nice t-shirt and big heavy medal

The Overall Score – How many stars do you give this race and do you recommend that others run it?

5 stars!

Me (1st from right), My Fiancee (2nd from right) & our friends.

3 Bests – What aspects of the race did you like the most?

1) Very friendly staffers and volunteers.
2) The weather was perfect. 59 degrees.
3) The view.

Not so much – Aspects of the race that didn’t do it for you

The starting waves weren’t well policed (people that were in the wrong waves).

Weird factor – What’s the weirdest thing about this race?

The advertised start time was 7:30am. However, it wasn’t the start of the wave (2) I was in. We started 15 minutes later. That was confusing.

Highlights of your race – What did you do well and enjoy about your race in particular?

I initially wanted to follow the pacer for a sub-2 finish but it felt too slow. Instead, I worked on my own during the whole race. I felt in control for the whole time and was able to manage my pace more effectively.

Lessons for others – Share your pro-tips on the race to help the next runner

Train for hills.

Lessons you learned that will help you next time around

Nutrition is paramount. I used 2 gels during the race and helped maintain my energy level high.

Most important course specific knowledge to know about the race

Looking at my Strava activity, take note of the very steep hill at mile 8/9. Make sure to take a gel about 1 mile before that hill or you may lose your breakfast (I’ve seen it happen!).

Aesthetics – Is it a pretty course?

Very pretty. For the first 5 miles, the runners follow the shore of the San Diego bay.

Difficulty – Is it a tough course?

The course is fast with rolling hills until mile 9.

Organized and well run – Did it feel like a well-oiled machine or were they flying by the seat of their pants?

Very well run race. Volunteers and staffers are always willing to help.

Competition – Is there a strong field?

Elite runner finished in 68 minutes.

Logistics – Does it require a special handshake, registration a year in advance, hotels all booked? Give us the low down on the nuts and bolts of making the race happen.

  1. Book your hotel reservation early.
  2. If coming from out of town, it is best to use public transportation due to road closures.

Aid Stations – Standard fare or anything special to know about the aid stations in terms of what’s available or when?

  1. water
  2. electrolyte drink
  3. orange slices
  4. gels

Weather and typical race conditions

A bit chilly at the start (48 degrees) so I wore gloves and arm sleeves) . 59 degrees at the finish and sunny. Slightly windy.

Gear – Did you need anything special or is there anything you’d recommend for the next guy?

No need to carry water or camelback. Aid station (every 4 miles?) provided plenty of water.

Spectators – Is this a friendly course for your friends?

Very friendly. Spectators with signs were everywhere along the course to support us. Even school bands, and flag teams.

How’s the Swag?

Good. Legacy runners (after 1 year) get a shirt and zip up hoodie.

The Overall Score – How many stars do you give this race and do you recommend that others run it?

I’ll give this race 4 out of 5 stars. Because there’s always room for improvements.

San Diego Half Marathon Race Info

Date: 3/10/2019

Location: San Diego, CA (Petco Park)

Start Time: 7:30am

Avg Temps (f): 65/53

Time Limit: 3 hours, 30 minutes

Lessons Learned from Race Reports

  • Just before the “big hill” at mile ~8, there are two smaller hills, which tend to surprise people
  • At the top of the hill, it doesn’t start going down right away. It flattens out for a bit, then starts the descent, so be ready for that adjustment and don’t expect an immediate relief with a downhill
  • Use the downhill to get some speed back, especially since it’s the last miles of the race
  • A mixed bag of weather in past years, so be prepared for sun, heat, rain, and humidity
  • The race tends to be on the weekend of Daylight Savings Time – pay attention to that and know you’ll already get an hour less of sleep because of it!
  • Typically not a lot of spectators or race entertainment on the course, so many parts can feel very quiet
  • While the hill is a big one, the beginning is so flat and the final miles are such a good downhill, that it’s still possible to run a fairly fast time.

Course

Type: Loop with Start/Finish very close to each other
