3 Bests – What aspects of the race did you like the most?

  1. Very well run event from expo to race day.
  2. Lots of positive energy and vibes in addition to course support (ample number of volunteers).
  3. Live music on course with various local bands covering a wide spectrum of genres performing during the race.

Not so much – Aspects of the race that didn’t do it for you

Nothing that necessarily falls into this category but the cone layout was often confusing as far as determining what side of the road you were supposed to run on. However, this was remedied by volunteers and police at critical intersections along the course directing traffic.

Weird factor – What’s the weirdest thing about this race?

Again, nothing that really falls into this category but the live bands on the course is a aspect unique to races in the Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon Series. Also at around mile 9, we had a well-timed “sasquatch crossing” that helped lift spirits as we got into the latter portion of the race and things started to hurt a little more. That was a fun little thing that helped boost overall morale. It was also along a section of the course that had a lot more surrounding trees as well, which I thought was appropriate.

Highlights of your race – What did you do well and enjoy about your race in particular?

For the first time in 3 years, Rock ‘N’ Roll was back in the PNW! It was cancelled for the pandemic in 2020, then again in 2021 when it was determined that Seattle didn’t have the police force necessary to host the event. Luckily, Bellevue was able to step up and host this year, re-branding the race as the inaugural Rock ‘N’ Roll Washington. It was nice to come back home and run in such a marquee event.

Lessons for others – Share your pro-tips on the race to help the next runner

The course gives you plenty of variety, lots of ups and downs. You may not get the impression looking at the course map, but the course can be deceptively hilly and can be hard to find a rhythm on. This is because while there are a couple fairly major uphill segments, there are also some fairly significant downhill segments that you can really fly on. My advice would be to just take what the course gives you, trying to keep even effort on the uphills then cruising on the downhills.

Lessons you learned that will help you next time around

I felt that having a conservative start was particularly beneficial, however there were definitely sections of the course where I could have pushed it a little more than I did. It was really easy to commit early on when starting in Corral 1, I was passing runners who started in the Elite Corral in the first couple miles (there was a minute gap between the corrals, via a wave start) but for much of the middle miles, I found myself in no man’s land. It wasn’t until around mile 10 where I found another Elite Corral runner to latch onto and pack up with for the last 5K of the race.

Most important course specific knowledge to know about the race

The course is essentially one big loop though you’ll be making an ample amount of turns in both directions. The start and finish are both adjacent to Bellevue Downtown Park on opposite ends of the park. Don’t let the uphill along Bel-Red Road get in your head too much as you’ll get a significant downhill to catch your legs a couple miles later as you approach the 10 mile mark.

Aesthetics – Is it a pretty course?

I’d say it’s a decently pretty course, we had really nice weather, sunny and clear plus not too warm, which helped this cause. Some of the residential sections and the aforementioned tree tunnel at the sasquatch crossing I’d say are pretty. The rest of the course is very indicative of what you’d find in a big city, but on the other hand it’s in those sections of the course where more spectators tend to congregate and cheer runners on.

Difficulty – Is it a tough course?

I’d probably give the course a medium difficulty rating, nothing too crazy. While the uphills can be a little deceptive, there is more than enough downhill to make up for it. As I said, I think the most difficult thing is that you can’t rely on rhythm running when it comes to this course.

Organized and well run – Did it feel like a well-oiled machine or were they flying by the seat of their pants?

Absolutely, I’d say that all the Rock ‘N’ Roll events are very well run. They have been going on for a long time in various locations around the globe and despite this being the first edition of Rock ‘N’ Roll Washington, it would definitely qualify as a well-oiled machine.

Competition – Is there a strong field?

I’d say there is pretty good competition. The winner snuck in just under 1:10 and top 10 were all mid-1:16 or under. I wound up finishing 5th overall, 1st in my age group and among non-elites. All 4 runners ahead of me in addition to the 6th place finisher were in the Elite Division (starting in the Elite Corral). I ran a time of 1:12:42, which was a 42 second PR. The field had some pretty decent depth as well as 15 runners broke 1:20 and 74 runners broke 1:30 in a field of 7904.

Logistics – Does it require a special handshake, registration a year in advance, hotels all booked? Give us the low down on the nuts and bolts of making the race happen.

If your coming from out of town, definitely book a hotel sooner rather than later. I didn’t have this problem technically being a local who grew up in the area but definitely plan accordingly if planning to travel in from out of town. Likewise, I’d register sooner rather than later as well, even just to try and lock down the best price. I feel a lot of entries this year (myself included) were entries that rolled over from 2020 and/or 2021 and when word gets out, it’ll fill up even quicker.

Aid Stations – Standard fare or anything special to know about the aid stations in terms of what’s available or when?

Pretty standard fare, water at all aid stations and Gatorade Endurance at every other aid station (8 total aid stations for the half marathon).

Weather and typical race conditions

Usually your in for pretty nice weather. It didn’t rain this year and there were cooler temps at the start given the start time is 6:30 AM but nothing cooler than mid-50s, getting into the mid-60s as you creep later into the morning (which is the listed average temperature listed on the website). Given the course time limit of 4 hours, you can reasonably expect to avoid the heat of the day.

Gear – Did you need anything special or is there anything you’d recommend for the next runner?

Nothing overly specific or out of the ordinary.

Spectators – Is this a friendly course for your friends?

Definitely a spectator friendly course, you can catch both the start and finish without straying very far from the Downtown Park. In addition, there are plenty of good viewpoints elsewhere in the downtown sections and in the residential areas if you either have local know-how or did your homework in reviewing the course and road closures.

How’s the Swag?

The swag is great and the medals are very cool (both individual race medals in addition to the heavy medals and remix medals). Not to mention at the expo, there is plenty of swag available for purchase both from various vendor booths in addition to the more official looking race swag like shirts, hats, sweatshirts, and finisher jackets.

The Overall Score – How many stars do you give this race and do you recommend that others run it?

I’d definitely give it 5 stars without a doubt. I’d recommend the race to others, whether your a beginner or advanced runner. The atmosphere and vibes at these events is pretty special and unmatched in many ways.

Rock ‘n Roll Atlantic City Half Race Report – Brittany Fischer

Race: Rock n Roll Atlantic City Half

Runner: Brittany Fischer

Race Date: 05/15/2022

Location: Atlantic City, New Jersey

Results: https://www.runrocknroll.com/atlantic-city-results#contentStart

3 Bests – What aspects of the race did you like the most?

  • On course entertainment
  • The finish line location
  • The medals

Not so much – Aspects of the race that didn’t do it for you

The expo was small and didn’t have many vendors. Running on the board walk, while it was unique it was too long and the wood cause foot pain and threw off my vision.

Highlights of your race – What did you do well and enjoy about your race in particular?

For being the first year really didn’t have very many issues other than having to change the start due to flooding. Well they did take away the certification of the course it was nice that the race kept runner safety in mind over other factors. The views are beautiful and the on course entertainment was really motivating and energetic. The bands were fun and entertaining as well.

Lessons for others – Share your pro-tips on the race to help the next runner

If they keep the course the same maybe practice running on the boardwalk. Running on the wood definitely hurts feet and causes shin splints from what I hear. The sun reflecting off the wood from the boardwalk also threw us vision and made it kind of hard when facing the sun straight on. Meet up on the road if you think you may slow down on the boardwalk. It was definitely not comfortable running on the boardwalk and my miles on it which are about the last 4 miles did slow down.

Lessons you learned that will help you next time around

Gain speed in the first 8 miles before getting to the boardwalk since I slow down while running on the boardwalk I lost about six seconds per mile we’re running on it we’re having to adjust my running in stride as to not fall on the wood and just from the weird feeling it felt with every step on it.

Most important course specific knowledge to know about the race

Practice running on wood or wooden surfaces the boardwalk while it is beautiful can’t throw you off.

Aesthetics – Is it a pretty course?

The last 4 miles along the boardwalk looking at the ocean were beautiful when the fog wasn’t there. it was nice to run along the casinos and see the crowd cheering

Difficulty – Is it a tough course?

It is not a difficult course very flat mainly asphalt except while running on the boardwalk.

Organized and well run – Did it feel like a well-oiled machine or were they flying by the seat of their pants?

For walking roll race it was organized well. Well they did not have the heavy medals for some of the participants it was still overall organized.

Competition – Is there a strong field?

It was a pretty competitive field for being a small field. They only anticipated about 5000 runners.

Aid Stations – Standard fare or anything special to know about the aid stations in terms of what’s available or when?

Several aid stations offering electrolytes and water. Two had fuel at them.

Weather and typical race conditions

Foggy and humid.

Spectators – Is this a friendly course for your friends?

Friendly course with bands and crowd support. The boardwalk had lots of spectators.

How’s the Swag?

The medals are nice. The shirts are decent but have gone down in quality from the past races.

The Overall Score – How many stars do you give this race and do you recommend that others run it?

5 stars.

Las Vegas Rock n Roll HM Race Report – Ping S

Race: Las Vegas Rock n Roll Half Marathon

Runner: Ping S

Race Date: 11/17/2019

Location: Las Vegas, NV

Results: 1:29:37

3 Bests – What aspects of the race did you like the most?

For one, these destination Rock n Roll races sure are good for the ego – not sure where else a 1:29 nabs you 3rd in your AG or 110/19,000 OA, but it did in Vegas =)

Secondly, as someone who enjoys Vegas for periods of time up to about 48 to 72 hours, but abhors the fact that it’s time spent almost exclusively indoors (with smokers) and that it’s one of the worst places to run (the strip, that is; except for pre-sunrise which is, ahem, difficult to achieve, in Vegas) outside, being able to combine Vegas with a road race is an ideal weekend.

Lastly, it’s of course a unique experience, the only private event for which the entire Vegas strip is shut down, and you get to run the entire length, twice, with all the lights, glitz, and glamour that you may (or may not) associate with that. The city turns out fairly well through the heart of the strip, though there are some quieter areas as well at the very north end of the course.

Not so much – Aspects of the race that didn’t do it for you

Logistics – I get that managing 20,000 half marathon runners and a few thousand marathoners is challenging, but clustering everyone in a “start line village” (read: empty parking lot off strip) with questionable signage and organization (there was one map showing where runners would eventually exit from but it was not easy to find – literally one poster-size map at ground level tucked away in a many-acres parking lot with tens of thousands of people milling about) and there was no other obvious way to tell where you were supposed to go (i.e., to get out of the village and to the start line, which was ONLY accessible from the village, once you were in the “village”) and then having everyone walk ~half a mile to the actual start line and corrals can’t be the best way, can it? I’ve done the race in past years where there was no start village and everyone just went to the corrals and it was a bit of a madhouse but I can’t say it was worse.

Weather – the race starts at sunset so you have the rather unique experience of weather that cools as you go versus the opposite with the more normal early am starts; that said, however, it was close to 75 degrees at sunset, which, at least to this Seattle-ite, is way too warm for good racing. Probably 65 or so by the finish, and no sun made things bearable, but definitely sub-optimal temps.

Combine this with Vegas being at 2,000 feet – which you don’t really feel but science says will take a little off your VO2 max – and the conditions aren’t that great for fast running. I will say that the first year I ran this (2014), temps at the start were ~55, so it’s possible to get decent weather, but I would not count on it.

Weird factor – What’s the weirdest thing about this race?

So, this was a first for me – potatoes on course as “fuel”. Literally, small cubes of baked potatoes in little paper cups. While I’m sure the Potato industry trade group or whoever thought that might be a great idea, that was a little bizarre to see.

Also, spied for the first time a man wearing a pink Vaporfly Next on one foot, and a green Vaporfly Next on the other – humble brag that he owns not one, but TWO pairs of $250 Nexts?! Or, somewhere out there is his buddy wearing the inverse mix of colors =)

Highlights of your race – What did you do well and enjoy about your race in particular?

Always a fun race, I was glad that although I struggled over the last few miles, I didn’t completely blow up.

Lessons for others – Share your pro-tips on the race to help the next runner

Do NOT do the full marathon here, unless you like running endless circles around parking lots off the strip in the latter miles of the race (seriously, check out that map – yikes!).

Also if you are staying anywhere not immediately around the start area, give yourself PLENTY of time to get to the start area as the monorail and other ways of getting around Vegas, with the strip closed to autos, are completely overloaded that entire afternoon.

Lastly, while the finish is at the Mirage, you don’t actually exit the finish area until the Bellagio (it’s cordoned and fenced off otherwise) so just know that if you want a hotel close to the “finish”, the one that matters is where you exit, not where you actually stop running.

Most important course specific knowledge to know about the race

The last few miles are actually a steady, if slight, uphill, so be ready for that. Good news is, you can see the sign for The Mirage (where the finish line is) from at least 2 miles away, so that, to me, is always comforting/motivating.

Aesthetics – Is it a pretty course?

If you think Vegas at night is a sight, then yes. If you think Vegas is a natural-resource obliterating @#%$hole in the middle of the desert that should not exist, then no =)

Difficulty – Is it a tough course?

Not really – as noted, slight elevation and generally warm temps don’t make it a super fast race but the course itself is pretty straight and relatively flat, with some steady but pretty gradual uphill and downhill sections making up most of it (heading north on the strip is mostly downhill, somewhat surprisingly).

Organized and well run – Did it feel like a well-oiled machine or were they flying by the seat of their pants?

Given the size I suppose they do a decent job – but as I noted earlier, the start line village was not my cup of tea and could be better managed. Honolulu, for instance, is larger than this race and somehow managed to get the race off without the use of a pre-start line staging area.

Competition – Is there a strong field?

Oddly, they had a 1:20 pace group and a 1:25 pace group for the half, which is quite fast for a race with 19000+ people where a 1:29 almost made the top 100.

Logistics – Does it require a special handshake, registration a year in advance, hotels all booked? Give us the low down on the nuts and bolts of making the race happen.

Some of the hotel rates through the RnR site were actually quite good. This surprised me – we ended up staying at the Cosmopolitan, which was very convenient to both the start and finish.

Aid Stations – Standard fare or anything special to know about the aid stations in terms of what’s available or when?

Potatoes!! Get em here. Otherwise, water and gatorade and one station with SiS gels this year.

Weather and typical race conditions

Noted above – typically dry (though I believe it rained in 2017) and expect warmer temps.

Gear – Did you need anything special or is there anything you’d recommend for the next guy?

If you’ve been really dying to wear that Elvis costume while running – this is your chance.

Spectators – Is this a friendly course for your friends?

Pretty good for spectators along the strip, and various vantage points like outdoor restaurants and bars, etc.

How’s the Swag?

It’s ok – probably getting a little cheaper for the Competitor/Wanda group…no more Brooks shirts, etc. Just your standard generic tech fabric shirt.

The Overall Score – How many stars do you give this race and do you recommend that others run it?

All depends on how you feel about Vegas! If you like Vegas and racing, you should probably do this race.

3 Bests – What aspects of the race did you like the most?

Great/fun group of runners, great location, great music

Not so much – Aspects of the race that didn’t do it for you

People didn’t seem to line up in their corrals very much.

This was the first time I’ve run a half marathon and am happy that I finished in under 2 hours. The weather was perfect.

Lessons for others – Share your pro-tips on the race to help the next runner

Arrive well in advance of the race to deal with lines for the bathrooms, gear check, etc.

Lessons you learned that will help you next time around

The elevation was a couple thousand feet higher than I’ve run in prior races. Found my HR to be higher than expected. Also, staying in a Vegas casino (New York NY) was very smoky and my sinuses were very aggravated.

Most important course specific knowledge to know about the race

Lots of volunteers directing folks, so it’s easy to navigate.

Seattle Rock N Roll Marathon and HM Race Reports and Info

Date: 6/9/19

Location: Seattle Center

Start Time: 6:30am (both)

Avg Temps (f): 69/53

Time Limit: 6.5 hours (full), 4 hours (half)

Lessons Learned from Race Reports

  • This course has changed each year in the previous few years, so it’s a hard to look at previous race results and race reports, but typically the courses have been hilly with plenty of aid and course organization.
  • Always be ready for hills with races starting and finishing in downtown Seattle. Courses have typically been hillier than people expect in the past.
  • Some parking around Seattle Center, but it’s also within walking distance of a lot of downtown hotels, and the Monorail runs to and from downtown (Westlake Center) to Seattle Center (check if it’s running that early)
  • If traveling for the race, consider booking a hotel within a half mile of Seattle Center so you can just walk to/from the race
  • Fairly hilly course for a road full and half marathon, with the biggest hill later in the race for the half marathon and hills throughout for the full, with bridge crossings.
  • Elevation profile for the full marathon isn’t entirely accurate because of bridge crossings
  • Both the Marathon and Half Marathon start at the same time and share the same course for awhile, so expect to be running around quite a few people who are continuing onwards and pay attention to the split point.
  • With it being mid-June in Seattle, the weather could still be anything from 50’s and rainy to 60’s and sunshine, so be prepared for wet or warm weather

Course

Type: Loop

Start/Finish Info: Starts and finishes at Seattle Center

Hills: Rolling courses throughout, with a more major hill near the end for the half and continuous through the full marathon. Sections around Green Lake (full) and on the Burke Gilman trail (both) will be flat

3 Bests – What aspects of the race did you like the most?

  1. FLAT – surprisingly, “flat” can mean pretty different things to different people, but when people call this course “flat”, they truly mean pancake, ruler edge flat. When you look at the elevation chart, it looks like there is elevation change…and then you realize the scale on the chart is 0-10 feet.
  2. Fast – in addition to being flat, there were about ~8 turns total on the course, so it was a great course to just get in a rhythm and run.
  3. Location – Lots of hotels right by the start so it was super nice to be able to just step outside, warm up, then go back to my room to grab a gear check bag with some warm clothes (was going to be waiting at the finish for a buddy), then head outside to the gear check just a few blocks away. Versus races with starts way out in the middle of nowhere (hi, CIM), this is a real luxury.

Highlights of your race – What did you do well and enjoy about your race in particular?

This was the race coach Matt and I were looking for – well paced hard effort as prep for Lake Sammamish in a couple weeks.

Lessons for others – Share your pro-tips on the race to help the next runner

This goes for any race and is probably not NOLA specific, but always trust your own sense of pace and/or your own watch against the “pace team” you’re running with. The 1:30 group on this day, that I ran with for a number of middle miles, was running pretty hot – the leader ended up finishing just under 1:29, which is, to me, a pretty significant difference from the assigned time. Hopefully nobody blew up because of it, but good to keep in mind that these pace runners are human too and not just perfect metronomes cranking out even miles all the way to 1:30:00.

Lessons you learned that will help you next time around

Running to the East on St Charles (roughly miles 4.5 through 9), the street appears mostly straight but is actually a slow long curve to the left, so stick to the inside of that turn as much as you can. Outside of that, it is pretty easy to run a fairly good race in terms of tangents (my GPS had me at 13.17 total).

Aesthetics – Is it a pretty course?

More or less, but I didn’t pay a lot of attention to the scenery. St Charles, having run on this street on past visits to NOLA, is nice for running, with the street cars and nice houses.
The finish in city park is also quite nice, with drooping spanish moss-lined trees arched over the final hundred meters – definitely New Orleans. Also, coming up on the final half mile, you’re running a straightaway towards a very grand looking New Orleans Museum of Art, which is a nice touch as you are tiring.

Difficulty – Is it a tough course?

Easy, fast course. Noted in many reviews, but do watch for potholes and train/trolley tracks.

Organized and well run – Did it feel like a well-oiled machine or were they flying by the seat of their pants?

I was surprised to find more than one aid station almost totally unmanned – the gel station just had huge buckets of gels sitting there but nobody handing them out, so runners had to go pick them out themselves. Same at one water station that I grabbed a couple of cups from (one for me and one for a dude I was chatting with). This was surprising to me for a RnR event.

Competition – Is there a strong field?

Dathan Ritzenhein showed up and won this one in just over 61 minutes, so on this day it was a pretty strong field. Not sure about other years (believe K Goucher ran one year) but in general, there was a good grouping of faster runners. My 1:28 was good for 75th out of ~7500 or so, and I had at least a few people around me for most of the first 10 or 11 miles.

Logistics – Does it require a special handshake, registration a year in advance, hotels all booked? Give us the low down on the nuts and bolts of making the race happen.

NOLA is a huge city so there’s plenty of hotel head room even for a relatively sizable event like this one (13,000 people across 4 distances).

Aid Stations – Standard fare or anything special to know about the aid stations in terms of what’s available or when?

I think they were “handing out” SiS gels (I didn’t take one but looked like those). “Quotes” used per my above comment on unmanned stations.

Weather and typical race conditions

Low 50s at the start, 60 or just above by the time I finished. 10mph wind though good portions of the course were out of the wind more or less.

Gear – Did you need anything special or is there anything you’d recommend for the next guy?

Coming from Seattle and the snow (this year), this was obviously just a shorts and singlet race for me. But you could tell some southern locals thought this was pretty cold as there were a lot of folks in two long sleeve layers (and not throwaway layers, either), long tights, hats, some in gloves, etc.

How’s the Swag?

Standard RnR gear – off brand shirts now that they’ve gone cheap and stopped using Brooks.

The Overall Score – How many stars do you give this race and do you recommend that others run it?

I think the weather here can be pretty variable (two days before the race highs were in the upper 70s to low 80s) so if you absolutely need 45-55 degree weather (or a really good chance of that), this probably is not the greatest bet for that.

Course wise, as noted, it is a very fast course.

Rock n Roll San Francisco Half Marathon Race Info

Date: 4/7/2019

Location: San Francisco, CA

Start Time: 6:15am

Avg Temps (f): 63/49

Time Limit: 4 hours, 45 minutes

Lessons Learned from Race Reports

  • Keep in mind, the course changed as of 2018, with taking runners over/back the Golden Gate Bridge and having less elevation gain than previous years
  • Some steep, hilly sections can be challenging, so train for hills!
  • Some non-technical trail sections (when you switch to the other side of the GG Bridge and a long stretch towards Fort Mason).
  • There is a hill about 1 km to the finish but the last 100 meters is a steep downhill with the finish line just around the corner.
  • Could be chilly at the start, especially with such an early start tie, but if the sun comes out, it warms up quickly once you’re in more exposed sections of the course
  • Parking can be hard near the start/finish, so easier to use rideshares or public transportation. Also helpful to have a hotel near the start/finish
  • If you’re looking for great bands and course entertainment along the way, this probably isn’t the best race, as it’s known more for the scenery of running on the Golden Gate Bridge and the hills. Not a PR course!
  • Be prepared for the Golden Gate Bridge to feel like long stretches both ways, and slightly uphill

Course

Type: Mainly out and back with start/finish at different locations

Start/Finish Info: Start at The Embarcadero at PIER 39, Finish at Beach St. next to Ghirardelli Square

Hills: Fair amount of elevation change between miles 3.4 and 11.2 with gains/losses of ~100-250 feet

Course Map/Elevation

Aid stations

Locations of water stations: About every 1.5 miles

Locations of electrolyte stations: Gatorade offered at every other aid station, Science in Sport gels available once along the course around mile 6.5

Spectator access

Access Locations: Start/finish likely the best locations since it’s mainly an out and back and runners go over the Golden Gate bridge. Best locations are in the Marina district before they go over the bridge.

Rock n Roll Arizona Marathon Race Info

Lessons Learned from Race Reports

  • Temps are cool to start but be prepared for a sunny race
  • Because the course doesn’t share the same route with the half marathoners, it doesn’t feel super crowded and may even get a little lonely in the later miles
  • Out and back portion from mile ~12.7-20 can be a little boring in terms of scenery and course entertainment, especially because the first half is more interesting and fewer spectators are on this section
  • A couple of race reports indicating the race running out of gels and fruit, so be sure to have backup fuel on you for either stretches of miles without fuel or if they run out
  • Easy to take the light rail to the start of the race since the start/finish is in different places
  • Have a change of clothes at the end or at least something warm to put on, as you will get chilly standing around
  • Know where the gel stations are going to be, as it may not be signed and past years had just a few people handing them out
  • The hill around miles 23-24 is going to feel fairly brutal being that late in the race. Know that a downhill to the finish is coming afterwards

Course

Type: Point to Point with an out and back in the middle

Start/Finish Info: Starts in Phoenix, finishes outside of Tempe. See Transport page for info on shuttles/parking

Hills: 300 feet gradual gain from mile 1.2-12, downhill/slightly rolling until mile 23, uphill 23-24,then rolling until the finish on a slight downhill

Course Map/Elevation Profile

Locations of aid stations: Frequency is every ~2 miles. Difficult to see the locations on the course map markers.

Electrolyte offered: Water, Gatorade Endurance (Lemon-Lime) and SiS gels (variety of flavors)

3 Bests – What aspects of the race did you like the most?

Well organized, beautiful course, lots of water and gel along the course

Not so much – Aspects of the race that didn’t do it for you

SO MANY HILLS!!!! At one point there was a hill so steep almost everyone was walking up it.

Weird factor – What’s the weirdest thing about this race?

I’m not a fan of them changing the course every year. I ran the Seattle rock and roll half two years ago and remember it being hilly but not as hilly as this year.

Highlights of your race – What did you do well and enjoy about your race in particular?

It was a beautiful day, the weather was perfect, and I felt good during this race. Although I didn’t get a PR (off by a minute), I took 4 minutes off my Seattle RnR time from two years ago.

Lessons for others – Share your pro-tips on the race to help the next runner

Practice hills! Work on running strong up a hill and then picking up the pace once you reach the top and it flattens out.

Lessons you learned that will help you next time around

Add in more hills to training. There is one final small hill at the finish that I wasn’t prepared for.

Most important course specific knowledge to know about the race

The course is a big loop, starting and finishing at the space needle.

Aesthetics – Is it a pretty course?

Beautiful course- views of the water, city and space needle, Interlaken Park is gorgeous (although this part was hilly, it was very green and gorgeous trees lined the way).

Difficulty – Is it a tough course?

This was by far the hardest course I have ever run on. Brutal hills from the start.

Organized and well run – Did it feel like a well-oiled machine or were they flying by the seat of their pants?

Very well organized! Definitely a fun race, awesome atmosphere, and pretty course. Although this race is challenging I will continue to run this race in the future and recommend it if you are ever in Seattle for it!

Competition – Is there a strong field?

Lots of good competition. There are multiple corrals so it doesn’t feel too crowded, but because there are so many people you are never really running alone.

Logistics – Does it require a special handshake, registration a year in advance, hotels all booked? Give us the low down on the nuts and bolts of making the race happen.

I have family in Seattle so stayed with them before the race. My husband dropped me off at the start line which was easy to get to. If from out of town there are tons of hotels close to the race. I would suggest singing up early for the race because the prices do go up quite a bit!

Aid Stations – Standard fare or anything special to know about the aid stations in terms of what’s available or when?

Tons of aid stations, water, and gel.

Weather and typical race conditions

Originally the forecast said rain but it turned out to be a great day. The weather this year was perfect, sunny, with a little breeze. Two years ago when I ran, it was cold and rainy. Seattle weather is hit or miss so you never really know how this weekend will be!

Gear – Did you need anything special or is there anything you’d recommend for the next guy?

Nothing special- wore shorts and a tank. Since it was sunny, I wish I would have also worn a hat or sunglasses.

Spectators – Is this a friendly course for your friends?

Yes! Lots of places for people to watch.

How’s the Swag?

Cool t-shirt and medal, lots of food and drinks at the finish.

The Overall Score – How many stars do you give this race and do you recommend that others run it?

4 stars- well organized, fun, and a pretty course, however I really did not like all the hills!

  • OVERALL 3394 / 9036
  • DIVISION 189 / 752
  • GENDER 1457 / 5338

My time this year was only very slightly faster than my performance for the same race last year.  Differences were that last year’s heart rate/effort was much higher, and this year the hills were harsher (or so I assume).

Strava activity link: https://www.strava.com/activities/1629994091

3 Bests

  • Met my goals to finish respectably and without injury (fingers crossed).  I feel like this was a solid stepping-stone to continue toward a full marathon.  I never have a problem with starting races slow and then ramping up.
  • Good practice for prep, gear, eating/drinking.  I felt better than I did on my recent 11 and 14 mile long runs.
  • I had a fun time.  It set the stage for an overall great day.

3 Not so Great

  • I was conservative and didn’t really push and use all that I had for the day. By the end, I felt like I had done an “easy run.”
  • The last hill was a disappointment. I thought I was done with hills and had picked up the pace only to get disturbed mentally and I even stopped briefly – twice even.  But it was near the finish line and I couldn’t stand the wimp out with spectators watching, so I salvaged it. Otherwise I handled the hills decently.
  • It’s a fun race (you are never really alone in that course) but there are so many people you can barely pass the people you need to pass.  I started in a corral pretty far back in the pack.

Highlights

  • It was the perfect set of temperature and conditions for me.

Lessons Learned

  • 6:30 am race start is pretty early.  I was kinda rushed in the morning prep.  Woke up at 5:30 am, had a banana, coffee, and one bite of a KIND bar whose flavor I did not like.  In general, I’m not hydrated enough and this was the case but it didn’t derail me. I would have hated to stop and wait in line for a porta pottie.  I barely went to bed early enough the night before. I forced down some spaghetti for dinner.
  • The Nathan water pack/belt worked well.  At mile 7, I started drinking the water (never used the water at stations) and slowly consumed half of a honey stinger energy gel (I like the flavor more than chocolate GU, and maybe next time I’ll do gummies).
  • Maybe see if starting in an earlier corral would make a difference.  Or run with pacers. Find a way to be near better runners.
  • At the end of the race, I took and drank a chocolate milk – didn’t agree 100% with my stomach.
  • Had a nice breakfast at home after the race.  Took a 3 hour nap and then was totally fine for my opera performance in the early evening.  Afterwards had dinner with friends (below) who say that Asian people do not go running.

3 Bests – what aspects of the race did you like the most

First one, I get to enjoy the run like I’ve never been before. I did all of the things I’ve learned since I start training. Second, I proof it to myself that I can do it and I did it well. Last one, I met so many cool people during my run!

Not so much – aspects of the race that didn’t do it for you

I started to feel a little pain on my 5th mile, which I thought was very early.

Weird factor – what’s the weirdest thing about this race

Nothing weird enough to talk about..:)

Highlights of your race – what did you do well and enjoy about your race in particular

Even when I was in pain, I enjoy the fuck out of the run. I remember what you said about it. I also know that my body is ready for it.

Lessons for others – share your pro-tips on the race to help the next runner

Keep doing it. Listen to your body, pace well, and enjoy the fuck out of it..:)

Lessons you learned that will help you next time around

Never give up

Aesthetics – is it a pretty course

It was a very pretty course. Arboretum was beautiful! I thing I shed a few tears when I passed the Japanese Garden. There was Japanese drum circle type of band, and they were AMAZING!!!

Difficulty – is it a tough course

No. I don’t think so. I’ve done Seattle HM (in November) and that one was hard

Organized and well run – did it feel like a well-oiled machine or were they flying by the seat of their pants?

It was

Competition – is there a strong field?

I personally didn’t pay attention on that since

Logistics – Does it require a special handshake, registration a year in advance, hotels all booked? Give us the low down on the nuts and bolts of making the race happen.

I don’t think so since I didn’t have to do much as far as registration. It was smooth sailing for me..

Weather and typical race conditions

Weather was perfect. Not too hot, and the morning was cool.

Gear – did you need anything special or is there anything you’d recommend for the next guy?

I don’t think so

Spectators – is this a friendly course for your friends

Yes!

The Overall Score – how many stars do you give this race and do you recommend that others run it

Race: Seattle RocknRoll Half Marathon

Runner: Roey

Location: Seattle, WA

Results3:32:27

3 Bests – what aspects of the race did you like the most

Crowd Support- Tons of spectators, bands, cheerleaders, and school groups along the course.

The views- Starting off at Husky Stadium you travel down to Seward Park before heading to the West side for grand views of the Wheel, and the Olympics.

The Swag- From the expo before the race, to the medal and the finisher jacket, this organization gives out a lot.

Not so much – aspects of the race that didn’t do it for you

The Half and the Full Started off at the same time, split apart at mile 6, then reconnected at Marathon mile 15 and Half mile 9. So when the Marathoners joined up with the Half runners it was 2 hours in. It got really congested because the Marathoners were 7:30 pace, and the Half was 14:00.

Highlights of your race – what did you do well and enjoy about your race in particular

Giving that I wasn’t “feeling it” that day, I am happy with my time. I felt better at the end than at my first few marathons.

Lessons for others – share your pro-tips on the race to help the next runner

Make sure you have a lot of cushioning on your feet. The tough concrete was unforgiving.

Lessons you learned that will help you next time around

Start off slower (although I think I tell myself that before every longer race).

Most important course specific knowledge to know about the race

They changed the course from previous years, and added an out and back up 99. There are 2 false summits up this portion. Each with pretty steep climbs.

Aesthetics – is it a pretty course

Gorgeous views along this course.

Difficulty – is it a tough course

Not a difficult course. Only a few hills

Organized and well run – did it feel like a well-oiled machine or were they flying by the seat of their pants?

They are a huge Race company. The expo, registration, and signage is very well done. I do wish they vetted peoples predicted finish times. It seemed like some folks were in too low corrals.

Competition – is there a strong field?

With 10000 people there is definitely a good mix. It is a wave start with Corrals, so you are very likely to be among like abled runners.

Logistics – Does it require a special handshake, registration a year in advance, hotels all booked? Give us the low down on the nuts and bolts of making the race happen.

Sign up early and get better pricing

Aid Stations

About every 2 miles. Stocked with Water at all, and Gatorade, Glukos, at some.

Weather and typical race conditions – Last year was warm and sunny. This year was cool and misty.

Spectators – is this a friendly course for your friends

Great spots all along the course to cheer people on.

Awards – Not sure

The Overall Score – how many stars do you give this race and do you recommend that others run it

4 Stars, I definitely recommend running this race.

Seattle Rock n Roll Marathon – Dionne H

Race: Seattle Rock and Roll Marathon – http://www.runrocknroll.com/seattle/

Runner: Dionne H

Date: 6/18/2016

Location: Seattle, WA

Results – 3:51.25 (PR!)

3 Bests – what aspects of the race did you like the most

-It’s in Seattle. So the logistic is very easy and simple when the race is in your own hometown.

– Known for not a fast course, surprisingly it was not that bad. If you train on hills this course is relatively fun.

– It is a very spectator friendly race. People cheer you on everywhere.

Not so much – aspects of the race that didn’t do it for you

There is no restrooms to change after you are done. They have porta potty but it is tough to change in one of those.

Weird factor – what’s the weirdest thing about this race

There were none really.

Highlights of your race – what did you do well and enjoy about your race in particular

Given the fact I just came out of an injury recently, to my surprise I set my PR in this race. I studied the course profile more so than before because I was nervous and felt slightly under trained (not enough time). And having your peers, in this case Daisy and Josh, throughout the course gives me boost of energy that help me finish the race strong.

Lessons for others – share your pro-tips on the race to help the next runner

Be patience. I ran conservatively, watched my pace and heart rate in the beginning. Then I really tried to push it for the last 2-3 miles. It paid off.

Lessons you learned that will help you next time around

Bring more gels just in case. I ate well every 45-50 minutes. But the last hour or so I got hungry and ate 2 gels within an hour. I’m glad I brought enough.

Aesthetics – is it a pretty course

It is pretty overall when you ran along the water in Lake WA Blvd, around the Seward Park and in the beginning of the course when you run the viaduct looking towards the sound.

Difficulty – is it a tough course

As I mentioned it before, as long as you train well this course is not that tough.

Organized and well run – did it feel like a well-oiled machine or were they flying by the seat of their pants?

Yes it is a very well organized, except for the changing room area.

Competition – is there a strong field?

Very strong field indeed.

Logistics – Does it require a special handshake, registration a year in advance, hotels all booked? Give us the low down on the nuts and bolts of making the race happen.

I decided to register 6 weeks prior to this race and there is still spots available. I don’t think it is a sold out event at all. And if you are from out of town, I overheard some people were saying the hotels were not fully booked either and relatively available around town.

Aid Stations

I noticed there were several of them throughout the course.

Weather and typical race conditions –

Get ready with Seattle weather. I was training for hot weather only to find this year the weather was in high 50s to low 60’s and a slight rain. But it was perfect.

Spectators – is this a friendly course for your friends

Very friendly course

The Overall Score – how many stars do you give this race and do you recommend that others run it

4 out of 5. 5 will be a completely flat course for me ???? with the same weather as this weekend.
